Thank you Allen and Leslie for another great video, my Wife and I are looking forward to retiring to Portugal in about 5 years, we plan on retiring when our youngest daughter graduates from High School, I will be 67 then and we are hoping our Girls will come with us. Your video's provide a great resource for us to gauge our decision making in everything we need to do to prepare us for the next chapter in our lives. My Wife and I are still trying to decide just where in Portugal to retire to, we are planning a scouting vacation in a couple of years to help make the decision on our new permanent home, we are looking at Madiera, the Azores and somewhere in or near Caldes da Rainha, close to the beach but away from the tourist areas. Thank you for putting out very informational videos about your journey and others that have also made the leap. Michael

We met someone who was born and raised on Madeira and they told us about a couple from the UK who bought a home on Madeira. They lived in a community where there we a lot of dogs who were tied up and left outside all day - the barking almost drove them mad - they tried talking to the dog owners, they contacted the local municipal council, spoke with the police, but turns out it is the culture there relative to dog ownership so there was nothing they could do. Put up with it or move. It’s a cautionary tale if you’re buying in a smaller village. The couple ended up selling and moving elsewhere….

We spent nights in Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto and Mesão Frió (Douro Valley), but we also visited Sintra, Cascais, Peniche, Nazare, and Aveiro. I would recommend that you go and stay as long as possible, one month would be great, and longer would be even better. That will allow you to visit many different places and see which one calls out to you.
Let me tell you about my Canadian car insurance. I had a second "accident" in my entire driving history several months ago. It was a fender-bender, not even my fault. But the Canadian system being what it is, I was faulted along w/other driver (other driver even told the insurance co that it wasn't my fault). I'm in my 50s, university educated, caucasian (yes, actuary formulas give you more points for being white = covert racism) female. In other words, I tick all the boxes for the lowest insurance rates. It's also important to note that I'm not even insured as a regular driver as I work from home so the car is just for running errands, etc (here in Canada, that affects your rates). After my fender-bender, my basic insurance (liability only) for a 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit w/120,00 km and which is worth less than $3000, is now $700/month. As my mechanic said, this is "criminal." This is only one of several reasons I am leaving Canada. I'm fortunate that I'm mortgage free. I don't understand how anyone can afford to live here, especially when housing is some of the most expensive globally.

In case someone needs a converter for more wattage, I would recommend talking to an electrician to get some guidance.
