- Former Pittsburgh Pirates Elroy Face and Bill Mazeroski attended a charity golf tournament Thursday to benefit Mon General Hospital. Mazeroski also talked about his walk-off home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series.
Lol, gotta love Prince's way of handling this post series broadcast with each person whether they were player, management, or commissioner! Basically 'Hi, congratulations, goodbye'. Wish WS winners' post game interviews were more like this today.
My exgirlfriend briefly met Mazeroski a few years ago at a local bar in his former hometown of Greensburg Pennsylvania. As an avid collector of baseball cards myself and a huge fan of the Pirates back then, I commend him for living his life on the down low and out of the spotlight. In other words, he never forgot his humble beginnings and you will not see that in any athlete in any sports of the present.
Bill Mazeroski is one of the great players I saw at a 1971 Pirates Game at three rivers stadium!
There's nothing not to love about Maz! Class all the way, and let's not forget that the guy seated next to him, a guy seldom mentioned EVER when the 1960 WS is the topic. Elroy Face, the Yanks simply couldn't hit him. He was a force in games 1, 4 & 5, and also relieved Law in game 7 getting the Bucs out of a jam so the fireworks & magic could happen. Hat tip to Mr. Forkball Elroy Face.
Face was 18-1 in '59. 18-1!
At 4:10, the interviewer mentioned Joe Carter's homer in game 6 of the '93 series, which is the last time a homer ended one. I had that on VHS tape, which I guess was considered high tech at the time. There was at least one time before 1960 that a homer ended a World Series, but I don't now know which one (or ones) in which that occurred. Mazeroski autographed a baseball card for me in 1992.
I think those are the only 2. There have been many walk off hits ending a World Series, and walk off homers extending a World Series to a 7th game, but 1960 and 93 are the only walk off homers to end the series.
Bill Mazeroski has a long name to sign but his signature is so beautiful. Not like the chicken scratch players sign on balls today.
@@billny33 But only Maz's ended it in the seventh game.
@@howie9751 absolutely. I am still so glad the telecast footage was unearthed and put on MLB network back in 2010. What a treasure that is to be able to see it the same way millions then saw it.
Mr. Walkoff.
A home run to beat the Yankees and win the World Series
I have Elroy faces autograph
Lol elroy face is my uncle. I wish I filled a slot like him. Kinda feel like a waste now.
Maz hit into a game-ending triple play that was staged for the original Odd Couple movie. That scene was filmed at Shea Stadium before a regularly scheduled game between the Pirates and Mets on June 27, 1967.
I'm so glad those damn Yankees lost...Woohoo!
Fluke WS champs...60 Pirates sucked, Yanks outscored them HUGELY in the 3 games they won. Crappy infield caused Kubek to break his neck in game 7 & assisted this travesty of a Pirate win. Yanks prevailed in 61-64 while shitty Bucs ended in NL trash bin.
