Was a little young for this but I started to follow baseball in 1969 and became a Pirates fan late that season and haven't looked back. I grew up outside New York and listened to the Gunner and Nellie King many a night on KDKA radio. You can kiss it goodbye! We had them all the way! A hoover. We need a bloop and a blast. How about a little chicken on the hill with Will.
Thank Bing Crosby for this. He had a Kinescope recording made of the game to watch later. He was superstitious and would not watch it live. The film was found in his old wine cellar decades later.
The Pirates were outscored 55 runs to 27, a better than 2-1 margin. They HAVE to be the only team to have been outscored by that ratio and yet won. Pittsburgh won the close games, while the Yankees won the blowouts. Honestly, the Yankees "should" have won the series in 5 games.

Bob Prince later wrote that he didn't get to see Bill Mazeroski's home run. He had gone to the locker room when it appeared the Pirates were going to win, but got called back to the press box when the Yankees tied the game. Just as he was about to reach the press box, there was a roar from the crowd and his producer yelled at him to get back to the locker room. He got there just as he was going on the air. He first interviewed Hal Smith, whose home run he had seen. He realized Mazeroski had the big blow when everyone pushed him up on the platform. Beginning at 0:40, he ad-libbed his way through an interview. After one of the most iconic moments in baseball history, Mazeroski got about 15 seconds of national air time.
Back when ballplayers were real, down to earth guys who just loved the game and not a bunch of overpaid, primadonnas who are all about themselves and their egos and will jump ship tomorrow for a few more $$$,

Interesting fact: Three different guys named Hal Smith played for the Pirates. some people said hal Smith was the real hero, as he hit a homer to keep the Bucs in the game. I think Stengel (the Yanks' manager) should've started Whitey Ford in games 1 and 4. I'm a Yankee fan, but that was an exciting ending, nonetheless. I'm also glad the Cubs won it all last year.

Gary, I'm curious, as a Yankees fan, which do you think is their greatest team? I'm a Pirates fan, but I'm also a baseball fan. The Yankees team that I think was the best was the team that won 4 straight in the late 30's, when DiMaggio was starting out.
Ford had a bad season by his standards (12-9 record), partly because of arm problems. Ditmar (15-9) was the best Yankees starter in the regular season. And Turley was their best money pitcher at the time. That said, Ford should have pitched out of the bullpen in Game 7. No matter. The better team won the series.

At the start of the interview, Clemente can be seen talking with teammates in the corner before he leaves, presumably to shower. He was a meticulous dresser and always among the last to leave the clubhouse. Now where was Joe Christopher? Bob Friend? Fred Green? Clem Labine? Vinegar Bend Mizell? Dick Schofield? Dick Stuart . . .?
