I don’t generally have much patience for people talking about their method. I mean, that’s my gig, why do I want to hear someone rhapsodizing about their gig? That all goes out the window when it’s Bob. He talks about his life, his joys and disappointments, and does so with a charming humility. I can listen to him for hours. Bob came to my remote truck for a live broadcast in Atlanta, and I wished we weren’t so pressed for time because I thought he’d be a lot of fun to have a beer with. I’m a fan.
That was interesting, thank you. It's also interesting that the amount of fuss made over Atmos seems to be in inverse relationship to the expertise of the engineer ;) This has triggered me to finally decide to build my own small Atmos Home room. BC seems to enjoy using it despite his critique, which are the same things that bothered me all the way down here...
My audio into my reciever comes from my PC. I can have my PC decode surround or send PCM to the reciever. Because my reciever is 5.1 and not Atmos , what would be handy is if the PC (or mac) could decode Atmos to 5.1 and send to 5.1 recievers or 7 1 recievers . Ok it's not full atmos system which can be bought and installed for home use of course but doing it this way we get the decoded Atmos in 5 1 or 7 1 without expensive upgrades to recievers and speaker systems. I like my 5 1, I've used it for years with some upgrades along the way but the expense and hassles of a full 7.1.4 setup in my limited size room is prohibitive. Not sure if this exists already but it would be an easy in for those with existing home cinema systems. What I always thought would be good is something you can plug into reciever outputs that transmit wirelessly to your existing speakers. Obviously they are designing sonos etc and specific wireless speakers but many people have "real" speakers which they like which would be better used wirelessly. I know this creates an issue as obviously the reciever is sending amplified sound and voltage to speakers so without internal amps in speakers probably couldnt work. But it would have been cool. 😂 if the decoder exists already for PC and Mac then I'd love to know. I know there is software you can buy for PC but not sure if it works the way I describe where it decodes in PC and Mac then outputs as discrete 5.1 and 7.1 from the Atmos.
Bob Clearmountain is the sweetest guy in our industry. I wish he was my uncle.
