AC/DC Legend Angus Young's Live SGs

  • The AC/DC legend recently celebrated 40 years since the release of 'Back in Black', so why not check out some of the guitars that made history.
    If things go smoothly, Angus will only use this 1967 Gibson SG during the entire show. All of the volume and tone pots have been changed several times because he sweats so much causing everything to deteriorate and corrode. The pickups have been swapped out with custom-wound, wax-potted Seymour Duncan humbuckers that have a resistance of 7.8k. All of Angus’ guitars use Ernie Ball Slinky (.009-.042) strings and he rocks with Fender Extra Heavy picks.
    His backup is a 1970 SG Custom that he used on the Back in Black world tour during the early ’80s. The guitar originally had a natural walnut finish, was loaded with three humbuckers, and had a Maestro vibrato.

      We're going back through our Rig Rundowns and picking out our favorite clips and reposting them. Some people aren't keen on watching a 30-minute video, but a more digestible snippet on a certain topic brings a bigger audience, and in result, hopefully engages with them enough that they check out the full video. (Full transparency: we got the idea from JRE Clips - Joe Rogan's subsidiary channel - and others that re-use their content to engage new/bigger audience.) Thanks for your feedback and support ... YOU make this channel a success.

    So cool. A couple days before classes started, during my freshman year in college, a group of us went to see AC/DC at Vets Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa. It was their Back in Black tour. We had general admission floor tickets and worked our way to the front, during the opening act. When AC/DC took the stage, I was standing within 10’ of Angus; and that killer SG; so close I hot hit by some of his sweat droplets, while he was trashing about. Really awesome show. Great memory.

    I've always loved that black and white custom. I've seen a lot of old pictures and some videos from the _Back In Black / Highway To Hell_ era of Angus playing it, and it's always been one of my favorites of his. That one and his first SG, the walnut finish one with the vibrola piece that you see in pictures from the very early AC/DC days and even the pre-AC/DC days.

    • @Remco96187
      @Remco96187 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the black and white custom in this video is NOT the famous SG he used in the Let There Be Rock movie (Paris '79) but yet another custom he acquired in 1980, for the Back In Black tour. There's pictures of it on the internet. It was indeed a 3 pick up wallnut custom, and it was pretty original/untouched when he used it live. Guess it got a re-finish years later. So even though this custom has the same b/w color scheme as the Highway to Hell era custom, I don't think this is that guitar. Unfortunately. That would've been REALLY cool!
      PS. Great taste. His original black and white custom and his first SG are also my favs!

    I was hoping to hear mention of our product The Schaffer Replica EX Tower. Though Angus and his techs have always claimed that he uses no effects, the Schaffer-Vega wireless system he used to record their biggest albums and on stage had an optical limiter+compressor+expander+EQ enhancer+harmonic clipping+boost+line buffer. That's a lot of effects! We rediscovered this circuit 35 years after it was banned by the FCC and reproduced everything except the outdated wireless tech with the original inventor Ken Schaffer. Angus received unit #1 and has been using The Schaffer Replica since the Rock or Bust rehearsals. He owns several units and attributes them to his best tone ever.

    These are just touring guitars. His actual #1, the first SG he bought, was a '72 (if I remember right) that he bought in '73 just before Malcolm put the band together. It was rebuilt around 1980 by a custom luthier (I can't remember his name) who put lightning bolt inlays in the fretboard, after which it was retired from live shows. It's the only guitar he records albums with, and every AC/DC album, in fact every single song to my knowledge, has been recorded with THAT SG.

      Angus’s first guitar was actually at 1968 Gibson SG that he bought in 1970. It originally had a maestro vibrato tailpiece but he removed it and replaced it with a standard stop bar tailpiece. It was a cherry red colour so I don’t think he will ever perform with it live again but I think he will only use it for recording. But that being said he does on several more.

    • @livewire2759
      @livewire2759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kgunitkeese17 I've done extensive research on Angus' guitars in the months since making this comment, as this video piqued my interest... (fair warning, this is gonna be a long read)
      Technically, his FIRST guitar was a banjo. He modified it to hold six strings so he could play it like a guitar when he was in his early teens. His first REAL guitar was a Hoffner that Mal gave him when Mal got his red Gretsch Firebird, around the time Angus was 15 or so. The next guitar he got, also the first one he bought himself, was his original Gibson SG. After piecing together pictures, interviews and other people's research, I've determined that THAT guitar was a late 1970, 1971 or early 1972 SG standard with a natural walnut finish (not cherry red) that he bought in 1972. It cannot be any earlier than a '70 model because it had a "volute" on the neck, a feature Gibson started featuring in 1970.
      By 1974, Angus had removed the arm from the tremolo, but the tremolo itself wasn't removed until late '77 or early '78 when he had an adjustable "stop bar" tailpiece installed, after Mal had one installed on his Gretsch. The truss rod of that SG was broken and repaired incorrectly around 1977, whoever did it actually welded the rod back together which burned a lot of wood out of the neck. The headstock was broken at least twice, again according to interviews and other researchers, and in the middle of the Powerage tour the guitar had to be retired from live use due to the body wood rotting out around the control cavity. At that point, he began using the guitars that would become known as "the Highway to Hell SG" (nearly identical to his original except that this one WAS cherry red) and "the Back in Black SG" (originally a white SG custom that he painted black and removed the middle pickup around 1977 [I believe this tech is incorrect about it being the walnut finished custom]). His original SG was then sent to JayDee who had previously rewound the pickups and replaced the control pots as well as replacing the truss rod and repairing the burnt wood in the neck, only this time the body was so rotten it couldn't be repaired. According to J.D. himself, in an interview YEARS after the work was done, he "built" a new guitar for Angus to replace that SG, and the only thing he was able to salvage was the headstock veneer. Again, this rebuild was done in 1978/'79, when Angus was having him do work on several of his guitars, and the interview where J.D. states this was from around 2000, so it's possible that he was mistaken about the details. I've also read that he either used another Gibson SG body and neck, or he made a new body and neck himself, and reused all of the electronics, the fretboard and the headstock veneer from Angus' original SG, but so far I've been unable to confirm exactly how the guitar was rebuilt. It's possible that "the Donington SG" which J.D. personally delivered to Angus right before going on stage at Donington in 1981 is the rebuilt incarnation of his original SG, but I haven't been able to confirm that either. Since that guitar was used for lots of live shows throughout the 80s, it's unlikely. Most likely, as you said and many others have claimed, the guitar was returned to Angus and he strictly used it for recording afterword and it has never again been seen by the public.

Finally, I tried tuning to 430 and BOOM! there it was, spot on with the records. On that note, no pun intended, I’ve also heard that they do play and record in standard 440 tuning, but slow the recording during mixing to get a heavier, thicker sound.
