Classic Game Room HD reviews VIRTUA RACING DELUXE for Sega 32x from 1994. This driving game works on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive with the 32X expansion device and delivers an amazingly smooth and playable version of the 1992 arcade racer, Virua Racer! Although Virtua Racer was available for the Sega Genesis it was choppy and sluggish. This 32X version blows it away with five tracks, three cars and excellent gameplay that runs smooth with quick response times. This CGR review of Virua Racing Deluxe for Sega 32x has gameplay from thie Sega Genesis Mega Drive driving game, Virtua Racing Deluxe showing game play in action.
Man, I miss low poly, flat shaded models. I love the weird 'other-worldliness' they create. To me, they'll always be the real virtual reality.
Lawnmower Man FTW!
+Pedro Lambrini I know EXACTLY what you mean! I'm surprised more games don't feature it. Especially the shaded type seen more in 80s movies than gaming. It's quite beautiful.
I'd love to play a low poly game on the Oculus Rift!
Yep
Me too. They aged a lot better than the first gen of texture mapped poly 3D games as well. After seeing Virtua Racing at an arcade in 1992 and being completely blown away by it, I thought and hoped that the 32-bit generation was going to be all about flat-shaded 3D games like this and Virtua Figher, and also the insanely lush 2D games (like we got on the Saturn). Wish that it actually was! Low res and glitchy textures did not age well at all. IMO, the first console that got texture mapping right was the Dreamcast. N64 got it right some of the time (eg: Mario 64) too but had other issues.
That moment you realize this review is almost as vintage as this game was when Mark reviewed it.
Whether it failed or not... it was an impressive piece of technology that out performed the SNES on a console that was already 2 years older.
I had this game for my 32x when I was a kid. Absolutely awesome game!
I would love to see you coming back to the Classic Game Room HD stuff.
I prefer this version than the Genesis and even the Saturn edition
This game has the best music and sound effects of any classic racing game, even the arcade version doesn't sound as fun.
Played this today. Great game.
Surprised to hear you shit on the Genesis version. Sure the graphics are a bit... scary, but the gameplay is still there. Yeah, the 32x version looks nicer, but the Genesis version has one huge advantage over it; you don't need to use a 32x to play it.
And boy does it show... still a technical marvel tho
After all these years, still my absolute favourite CGR review! EDF! Forever!
I loved this game! hmmmm polygons.
I disagree that the Genesis version should not have been released. You have to put yourself in 94'. The Genesis version ran pretty smooth considering it was a 16 bit console. It was smoother than Star Fox and had to push a full polygonal environment unilke Star Fox's flat grounds. Plus it was released almost 7 months earlier. While the 32X was obviously better, it naturally should be for a $150.00 add-on plus the game price.
SlothMachines I like the genesis version, found it pretty impressive at the time.
have to admit... this blew the SNES away... SNES can't do this shit... Sega released the 32x to slap nintendo in the face.
I still remember the tunes from this game since I originally had the 32X. Classic.
That looks pretty revolutionary, I mean with the 3d-graphics, replay-mode, actually getting to choose between manual and automatic, switching viewing perspectives...
I mean, that's the stuff that we have in every racing game today and more, but this is the mid 90s for Christ's sake!
Awesome i love these polygon racing games from thew early 90´s those were the days.
Brings back memories...
At this point perhaps the definitive version is the PS2 SEGA Arcade Classics compilation with this game on it. If you have a Logitech wheel the experience is near arcade-like.
This game had awesome graphics for the genesis!
I love this game. I played it so many hours, luckily, ive still got it!!
The cars are:
Prototype: Nissan R92CP
Stock Car: Chevrolet Camaro
Formula 1: Williams FW14B
Just thought I'd point that out. :)
Loves he's reviews, they come so often and they are all great! :D
Thought of this game and googled it. Had it on my 32x and played it for hours. Ever find the secret parking lot (or whatever it was) that you could slide around in (or collide, in 2 player mode)?
The colors are very very natural looking this amazes me still today.
It seems that Sega had a knack for clever "Game Over" delivery with their 90s racing games.
2:10 totally disagree the Genesis/megadrive version plays brilliantly and has a great sense of speed, I only just picked this up it takes me back in time feels just right, what an awesome acheivment for the megadrive.
Saturn version even had a Go-Kart! :-)
But hats off on mentioning the cockpit view...something MANY racers have failed to include until VERY recently...and even then, cheap out on only making it for SOME cars (Yes GT5 I'm talking about you!)...That's like giving all but the Stock Car on here a cockpit view!
I'm gonna play this right now actually!
There are 2 separated concepts that have been conflated with the umbrella term "3D": polygonal graphics and stereoscopy. The former is called "3D" because the processor computes distances in 3 dimensions, the latter is called "3D" because you actually perceive depth. That's why I avoid saying "3D" and say "polygonal graphics" or "stereoscopy" depending on the case.
Yes it did. Thanks for correcting me. Before Sega Rally Championship was Daytona USA. Before that there was Virtua Racing. And they are all amazing.
I remember playing this at my friends house in 1995 and was blown away by how awesome it was. To see decent looking 3d games then, we had to go to the arcades. I remember thinking that VR Deluxe has the best graphics ever... sooo realistic I said.... haha
You must’ve had an aneurysm when PlayStation, N64 and Saturn arrived
YesPotter
@TheMapsp07 Ok so the regular Virtua Racing for Genesis would work for the Nomad since it was designed for the Sega Genesis.
This was a game I got a hold of right away when I got my 32X brand new at Toys R Us for $29.99. They had a stockpile of 32X units, each one with a free copy of Virtua Fighter included. How could you look at that towering 32X pile and not want to buy at least a couple dozen???
amazing! I love all your reviews they pass the work days!
yes there was a genesis version of the game with a special graphics chip in the cart, the only game that had it. The chip even had a basic heat sinc.
@Landmark356 what they did with the 32x and the virtua racing cartridge for the Mega Drive was very similiar to the FX chip in StarFox well in that they could push actual polygons not just 2D sprites ... so good reason for it I guess.
I don't care that the 32X died a horrible death. It was the home of Virtua Racing *Deluxe* Back in that day(and even still today) the add on was worth it to me. Sega racers have their charm and are massive fun. Its why you owned their systems.
That's some funky ass music playing there...at least during the checkpoints and game over screen.
I remember the other problem with the original Genesis V.R. when you owned a 32X, it wouldn't work with it and you had to remove your 32X which was a pain to do.
I actually enjoyed playing it on Genesis. Granted, it was HARD, but once you figured it out, it wasn't so challenging that it made it unplayable.
they apparently re-made the game for the ps2 as well. I remember playing this game on my sega never played it on any other system besides the arcade version.
It reminds you of Daytona because the model 1 arcade version had the polygon count lowered and textures added turned to daytona and then released on the Model 2. It is the basis that Daytona was built from, its most obvious when you hit someone from behind and the car does an identical spin to daytona. Also the origins of the Sega Rally GAMEOVER screen
all your reviews are so epic - keep it up
I have only played Daytona USA and Sega Rally Championship. Daytona USA blew my mind when I first saw it. It was the one that truly showed the capabilities of the Model 2 motherboard.
Ketorulz Yes you are yes fris one
The 32X had the same main chips as the Saturn- I regard this one as closer to the arcasde version compared to the Time Warner-released V.R. Virtua Racing on the Saturn, although that one was fun too
Look it up on google. It is an add-on for the sega genesis. You insert it into your game slot just like a regular cartridge and than insert your game 32x game into that device. Not to many games where made for the 32x though, so you might want to save yourself the money. I mostly bought it for it's collector's value and to build the highest genesis stack i could. :D
Wow this game looked amazing but I was blown away when I saw the in car view.
This game is way ahead of it's time with it's game play features. Very cool to see this game in action.
great review man! finally someone giving a 32X game some props. btw... i used to play the shit out of this game on the 32X when it first came out and your right, it does kick ass!
To me those graphics are still pretty damn awesome. Though I think when viewing a retro title such as this, it makes it easier to understand the beauty when you have known the console first hand like you and I have. To me this game is still a work of beauty, the graphics in this hold up better than some Playstation 1 games.
"god damn thats a funky beat, makes you wanna get up off the couch!" :L
Class.
Ah, brings back my youth. you've made me dig out my 32x and megadrive from the loft. Star Wars was a quality game.
Wow, I see that Sega had so many accessories, never owned one but I owned a Super Nintendo 2 model when I was 4, was pretty cool.
I see TH-cam is keeping up on these errors. They don't seem to pop up as rarely as they used to!
I really loved the arcade version of this game with the widescreen monitor, i spent quite a lot of money there. I think the 32x one is the best home version, forget the saturn one.
I remember playing this and watching through my entire replay the every time!
These graphics are actually pretty good, considering the time this game was released. I honestly don't think early 3D games age as bad as others say.
When I was little at Walt Disney World I played this game so much... I remember finally getting it for the 32x and loved it.
I can't believe how bad the graphics look from the games now.
It's working. Try it again! You will here Mark mention the word "deluxe" throughout the video!
Now it's time for me to have a burger with a deluxe order of french fries! =P
Mark man, the way you talk about french fries and coleslaw is making me hungry yo!! reminds me of the sandwich you filmed in downtown pittsburgh with capicola ham/fries/slaw all in between the bread.
hows Stella doing btw?
They did make quite a few improvements in this version but I thought the Genesis version was pretty good! I've never been able to find this game or a 32X to play it on so I had to settle with trying it on an emulator
i love those polygon graphics, they look cool
Excellent review!!
I dont think the SNES had any racing games better than this one...
One point for the Sega 32x
I really appreciate your older. Just got my Gen 1 out of storage w/32X because of this video.
I love how the Genesis can't rotate the background to match the rest of the 32X graphics when they are tilted from driving on banked turns.
2:32 MUST love the interiors. God, what a great game.
lol i just noticed that the highland course is in daytona usa cce and 2001 as the desert course
I heard that this game doesn't work on the Genesis nomad. Trying to figure out if this is a rumor.
@AlexanderLindell It came out on the 32x...How are you gonna judge it?
@yuri. The game, more specifically the arcade machine, actually debuted in 1992, and in 92, there was nothing like this game. In 1996, Next Generation ran a 100 greatest games of all time feature and this title (arcade) placed 12th, the editors calling it the "best driving game on the planet."
(continued) see, the 32x was a product of Sega of America alone, just to squeeze a bit more cash from its already estabilished Sega Genesis market. Sega of Japan didn't want to have anything to do with this, mainly because it didn't make sense to sell such an add-on on a country where consoles sell so well.
and that's actually the reason why the 32X got so little support, and got dropped so soon. read a bit about this, if you're interested ;)
CGR:
PLEASE REVIEW Shadow of the Colosuss on the PlayStation 2 !!!
It's an absolutely AWESOME classic game. You MUST have it in your review catalogue!!!!!!
Eminently playable game to this day. Period.
have the saturn version, and only played this through emulation. have its inferior atari rival, checkered flag.. but this is the best version..ive played..what it lacks in graphics (though these graphics were top notch in there day) it makes up for in game play. cool review
Love this game. Have all three versions, and although this one is great, I prefer the Saturn version. More tracks, cars, and a save option is included in the Saturn version. :)
It’s a great game but the difficulty is exaggerated... almost impossible to win races in the hard mode (to see the ending)
Before Daytona USA was Sega Rally Championship. Before that there was Virtua Racing. And they are all amazing.
suprised by how smooth that is.
There is also a port for PS2 which is the best yet! You may want to pick that one up after you get the Saturn version.
love the first person view in the formula one car
The polygons aren't naked. they have single color textures.
The thing I am talking about is the An error has occurred, please wait. It might not work at first, but just keep trying :P
Dude! I need a 32X. This game just makes me want to remember. Tho this game is older than me :-/
Also a side note: Whenever those TH-camrs say that they can't watch the video. DO NOT TELL THEM TO REFRESH!
It is obvious that you have to refresh the page. Let them explore and see that they have to refresh/see how stupid and dependent they are.
I loved VR for the Genny. Best 90 bucks I spent on a Sega game.
I remember trying to get all the trophies for this game on every car, with exception to the first car and a bit of the second one, damn hard... damn damn hard.
I loved the voice when you did a fastest lap "farstest larrpp"
adpar what about time boner?
mark please do your fan a favor and bring the old opening back
Good grabs, but nexdt time you make a 1080p Video with gaming content, please upscale the footage without filters. This looks awfully blurred... Aside from that, nice vid ;)
play this game on Vizzed Retro Game Room and use the Logitech F310 controller or the other one, the "geufia" as Mark calls it. it`s like Gran Turismo.
The SUPERFX Chip was from 1993!
Is cheese ever included with anything? except for classic game room of course...
I remember this game, I loved it and played it to death. Can you review Virtua Fighter??
I bought the Genesis version back when it was new. If my memory serves me correctly, it wasa bit over 100 bucks after tax in Canadian dollars. I played it for about a week then got tired of it.
I used to think this game had amazing graphics when I was a kid. It is crazy how much graphics have changed
thanks Mark and CGR
graphics remind me of YSflight, the stock planes, not the tf58 expansion, but the origional planes
Seems great! And it seems it was ahead of its time.
I love the arcade style SEGA racing games, and this looks pretty good, i really need to get a 32X.
Did you get that 32x?
If not, they're very expensive now
Did you get that 32x?
If not, they're very expensive now
wow, didn't remember early 3D graphics looked so bad! :P
but even with such an edgy look, gameplay must've been classic Sega arcade racing, and sometimes that's all you're looking for ;)
what if u would go back to 1980? what would u do then?
i have this game but it crashes after the starting intro >.> ive tried everything and i cant get it to work
there was a saturn version if you want to review it. it was decent but the ps2 and 32x versions are way better
