Just got myself a Saturn and honestly I can't put this game down, despite all it's flaws. I've grown to enjoy the music which is a tasteful update I think, and it keeps some of the arcadey synth sound where it's best used. The engine noise really is pants though, nothing comes close to that lovely sonorous note that the arcade game produced. I'm enjoying it because of the gameplay though, it's a lot of fun even if it is far too easy. There's plenty of extras to beef up the experience which is nice. I'm rather disappointed that practically all the credit to Sega and AM2 have been removed apart from a brief note on the intro video. I've been looking into doing a 'custom' version and rearranging the audio tracks to their rightful positions one day but I'd have no way of playing it.

Es una versión de Virtua Racing que sinceramente cuenta con muchos defectos técnicos. Sin embargo tiene un encanto muy especial, un "no sé qué" que me atrae muchísimo.
@Quartrez For all intents and purposes the 32X is still the definitive console version of VR. The Saturn version would still be the worst if not for the PS2 which controlled terribly. This version was way way below par for what the game should have been on the Saturn, but it is salvageable because it does play very well and has alot of extra content not present in the arcade version. It is a good racing game, it just sucks at being Virtua Racing.
Sega should have given this game the same treatment as they did with Daytona and Virtua fighter back in the day. It would have been nice to see the game with textures.
way better than the genesis port(not a surprise) and really close to the arcade machine. Those who got their hands on this game back in the day were lucky bastards
Honestly we did not see that way. While this port has actually aged pretty well due to all of its extra tracks, cars, and game modes, it was not well received due to lack of parity with the arcade machine. Back then we wanted an arcade perfect version which the Saturn was more than capable of delivering and did not get it. It's kinda funny that we finally got more than a perfect port on the Switch now and I still find myself going back to the Saturn version because it is way more of a complete game, and even though the engine sound sucks, the gameplay is still very good.
Sir Mark If the laser itself is not working then you need a new laser assembly. However alot of times the laser mech could be failing to move like it should which can cause similar problems. I would clean the laser mech rails and corkscrew drive gear with some alcohol and relubricate them with some white lithium grease. Do that before you toss the laser assembly.
i had sega mega drive version spend many many hours playing it i know evry corner and how fast i can go in each corner and lap, cuz your tires geting worse every lap
I've noticed on my Saturn that audio is outputed in MONO. I got worried and tried other games and they were in proper stereo so it's not the console. Your footage sounds the same as my Saturn, so I guess I can conclude that they messed up and made the game running in mono even though audio CD files are recorded in Stereo! What a mess. I've tried all version except PS2 and Sega 32X is by far the best one, it feels faster (though I'm running it on emulator) and music kick ass in that version.
The Saturn port is indeed messy. It should have been the best port of this game by far, but it was outsourced and rushed and it's a miracle that it's as playable as it is. It completely sucks at being the arcade but it's still a pretty good racing game based on it's own merits. However back in the day I was expecting to finally have the arcade in my room and that didn't happen. So the 32X was actually the closest the home ports ever got to the arcade and it was actually good. The PS2 version is terrible. Don't worry you're not missing anything. It looks and sounds the part, but the gameplay is trash.
I agree controls ruined PS2 ver ,it could have been the best ver otheewise:( i own both megadrive and 32x carts, just missing Saturn disk to have all console ports
i know Virtua Racing is a milestone in 3D gaming and all, but the Saturn's capabilities make it look quite dated, especially with games like Daytona USA and Sega Rally on its library. then again, i feel that, if Virtua Raging were to be modernized, it wouldn't be Virtua Racing anymore, unlike Virtua Fighter which had managed to remain true to itself even as the graphics evolved.
That's the way the original arcade was. Even if you came in first you had to put more money in to do another race. So it was game over no matter the result of the race.
MAN, how did you mantained a Sega Saturn in 2011? about the V.R. ports, the arcade version, I played it in MAME (is normal that is hard to drive?) and the 32X.. I enjoy playing with stock car. . I have the MD cartridge until today..
Matained a Sega Saturn? They're pretty robust systems, perhaps not as solid as the N64 as they have no moving parts but definitely better built then the original Playstation
How can this be the worst version when it has more cars, more game modes, more tracks and more detail than the 32X and especially than the Genesis version, and it runs smoother than both?
The control of the car is no good, it's extra options are not as good as the 32x version (Best Version) and the Mega drive version is bloody spectacular when you think about it and when you actually play it. I have all of these versions described. Thank you for your eyes.
+DrDevil FX From what I find out, SEGA was working on the 32X version while so they ware looking a 3rd party to make the SATURN version so that the 32X and Saturn have Virtua Racing at launch.

If you want to play a fun racing game, play the Saturn version. If you want to play Virtua Racing, play the arcade.
Am sorry sega fans but i just really really don’t understand why sega brought virtua racing on the sega saturn,to me it seems nothing more then just a desperate cash grabbing tactic from sega in the hopes to convince saturn owners to have the full arcade experience athome, but was the sega genesis not supposed to be the full arcade experience athome? Why then also porting it to the sega saturn?? Sure the saturn version might be better but they already ported it to the 32X to convince genesis owners about the 32X arcade upgrade, but i consider that just as a waste, am mean why would you pay 3 times the same price for a game you already own??? +charvelgtrs I go into some of the reasons why people think this in my description. In short, the Saturn version is a solid racing game, but it sucks at being a good port of the arcade. The 32X was a much more faithful port of the arcade despite have much less polygons on screen and a running at a lesser yet more stable frame rate. The 32X version had the spirit of the arcade. The Saturn version does not. However the Saturn port has more cars and more tracks than the 32X version which adds longevity to the game. It plays very well and is a decent game based on it's own merit. Compared to the arcade it's almost not even the same game. That being said, the only thing that beats playing the arcade version in MAME with a Logitech steering wheel is the actual arcade cabinet itself. That is something that not even the 32X version can touch. So unless you can afford the actual arcade cabinet, the order of best to least IMO goes like this. 1. MAME 2. Saturn 3. 32X 4. Genesis And a very distant 5. PS2
+OldsXCool So the 32X version has less polygons AND it's less smooth than the Saturn version, but somehow it's a better port? How does that even work? And how would you define "spirit of the arcade"? I'm asking because I would define it as "nonsensical attempt to justify a falsehood".
+DevilMaster Don't come on to my channel telling me that I'm speaking nonsense just because you don't agree with my assessment of the various ports of Virtua Racing. These are just video games, not politics. However I will illustrate for you what I meant by "spirit of the arcade". Virtua Racing the arcade from it's menu system, music, sound, and gameplay has a certain aesthetic. The menus are quick, the sound and music is loud and bold, the gameplay is fast. At the starting line your car takes off like a rocket from a stopped position and your engine screams as your car climbs in speed. The frame rate is solid which provides an excellent sense of speed. The music in between checkpoints even further augments the excitement of racing. The 32X version though it lacks in polygon counts and runs at a third of the frame rate of the arcade still has all the aesthetics of the arcade. Now let's look at the Saturn version. The menu systems are very slow with the music being out of place along with tons of unnecessary loading screens. This was because the game was rushed. Your car all but crawls up to it's top speed from a stopped position instead of taking off like it does in the arcade. The music is slower paced live recordings versus the arcade's more upbeat chip music. The sound effects are either nonexistent or they straight up suck. You car sound is a single tone that could have been done better on an Atari 2600 sound chip. While the target frame rate is higher in the Saturn version the frame rate suffers a lot from significant slowdown which robs you of sense of speed. While the 32X version runs at 20 frames per second, it is a solid 20 frames. Pretty much the only aesthetic that Saturn version got right was play control which still makes it a solid racing game but it's a poor port of the original arcade. While the Saturn version feels good as a racing game, it does not feel like Virtua Racing hence not having the "spirit" of the arcade.
+DevilMaster Here is it what happen, the 32x version was made by SEGA the same guys who made the arcade version, while the saturn version was made by a 3rd party. Thats why the 32x version have better controls more faithful to the arcade
