    Lot of people asking "how high?" and "how far?" If it gets the lucky 30m/s and there is no wind resistance the highest it can go is ~45m and the furthest ~91m. Add in air resistance and those drop a lot.
    You are loosing a heck of a lot of energy through the cylinder moving. If it only moves at 1/4 the muzzle speed of the piston them you loose nearly half the energy... Although momentum is the important value here.

    The piston doesn't have any seal rings on it so a fair bit of pressure escapes around it before the piston moves. If you were to grease the piston lightly, the grease should act as a weak gas seal and reduce friction in the cylinder allowing more pressure to build behind the piston to push it out even harder. Also, a lot of energy (33-50% I'd guess) is lost because the cylinder isn't very secure. The pressure in the cylinder is pushing the cylinder rearward in equal proportion as it's working to push the piston forward. If you secure the cylinder so that it cannot move backward so much, the piston will launch with much more energy. A solenoid actuated gas valve could also help as it will allow for a more sudden release of the gas into the cylinder rather than the ball-valve which is actually rather slow to release the gas into the cylinder. The shear-pin is an interesting idea, but I'm skeptical of its necessity in a horizontal launch.

      Actually It doesnt matter, due to newtons second law. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The energy you see going into the cannon here would just have gone into the earth if the cannon was bolted down as firmly as possible. I believe Cody's Lab has done an experiment on this where he shot a miniature cannon both bolted down and allowing it to move, it didnt make a difference in projectile speed

    • @jvcrules
      @jvcrules 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are a few comments about adding a single point or blade to the business end of the piston. I was thinking several thick points like from the old Spikenator. Maybe interchangeable plate attachments with all those options would work, so you could try each against similar targets. I think seeing a single spike, single slicer blade, and multiple spikes hitting stuff like a watermelon or pineapple would be great.

    You should secure contracts with sports equipment suppliers in Finland and test their stuff! Would be fun to watch and make you some money! The ad youtube shows next to the video is also on topic. It shows a aluminium stepladder, a hazelnut wood paravent and a children playhouse made of colourful plastics. All stuff you could test with the machine.

    When that bag went up-and-over, I couldn't help but think of some of the old Looney Tunes that used to play when I was a kid. Anytime someone was on a swing-set, they'd inevitably get pushed so hard that the swing either launched whoever was riding it, or it wrapped around the beam over the top and tangled the character in it.

    Kuusi, Viisi, Neljä, Kolme, Kaksi...boom, bang, or run! I think the base of the air cannon flipping absorbed quite a bit of energy of the piston leaving the cannon. If it were better secured the piston may have removed the punching bag from its attachment.
    Maybe try shooting the piston at a plate that has explosives behind it. With the right timing the plate could be sent into the front of the piston in midair. And just maybe you would have an explosive weld between the two. Very difficult to be sure.
    You guys rock!

    I didn't think it would destroy the punching bag completely as the bag and projectile have similar masses and the projectile isn't moving that fast (it has tons of energy and momentum, of course, but it's moving at a reasonable speed.) Also, the bag was free to swing, which allowed it to slide back as it was hit. That said, I can't believe it didn't even really tear the bag.

    - shoot that piston across frozen lake and see how far it goes...
    - put the smashinator straight up on the ground and see how high the piston goes
    - mount it on some sort of vehicle and break open some "bank" doors with that thing
    - on a 45°angle and trying hitting things like a mortar, as aready mentioned by others
    - place log pieces in a triangle, put a bowling ball in front of it an play bowling
    - ....
    just a few of ideas of mine

    For better Performance:
    The Air hose should be as short as possible to reduce flow resistance and the Cannon should be as heavy as possible to reduce recoil.
    I think the easiest way is to remove the Air hose completely and mount the Air Tank directly to the Valve.

    I have a suggestion, that you should anchor the smashinator machine, so it transfers more force to the target rather than accelerating backwards!

  • @wickideazy
    @wickideazy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    it occurs to me that in this setup, the smashinator is basically a pneumatic cannon. which means you have to go one step further and shoot the punching bag with an actual cannon.

    The problem is that the barrel is moving backwards faster than the projectile is. It isn't so much as the projectile is leaving the barrel as the barrel is moving out from underneath of it. That means its momentum is the limiting factor in the force imparted to the projectile. It you can make the barrel more stationary, or heavier than the projectile, you will maximize the acceleration and energy of of the projectile.

    Once upon a time, during the early days of this channel, you guys did a bunch of air cannon videos. I think it may be time to revisit this
    With all the lessons you've learned from the Smashinator, perhaps it is time to design a new air cannon based on that design, with a specialized projectile made for getting maximum distance.

    That punching bag was stronger than expected! You should put it in the hydraulic press and find out exactly how strong.
