First, I am not a composer. I can improvise within a raag and bandish, but I don't compose songs. So please read my answer with that in mind. If the lyrics are portraying a particular mood, you will use a raag based on that mood. To do that however, you will need to first learn many raags before you can decide on which raag to base your lyrics on. Does this make sense?
