    That's the best looking air soft SAA I've ever seen! The hammer actually looks real and not unnaturally raised off the frame.

      Tanaka really make some nice models. I had an earlier version Colt SAA and purchased the Rare Snakehead grips as seen in the “For a few Dollars More”....trilogy Clint Eastwood Movies. I don’t know what possessed me to sell it but I did. It was the only Tanaka I sold out of my collection and I still have many other models left. For example S&W M29 .44 Mag 6.5”, Biohazard 0 Umbrella Magnum 8” Nickel, P08 Luger, SAA Nickel Calvary Model, Colt Detective 2”, Browning Hi Power w wood grips, Colt Bisley Nickel, S&W Python .357 8” Blued...etc....
      The Jupiter finish is a very nice finish...none of my guns have that so it is nice to see this as I’ve never seen it in person. Tanaka seem to mfr in “batches” over time and stock can be very hard to come by so the diligent collector will find it takes time to build a nice collection as a result. Tanaka, Western Arms, and Tokyo Marui remain my fav brands because of their quality and attention to detail. I’m sure their are other obsessed collectors out there and I’d sure like to see a collection video if at all possible. I thank you for sharing and I’m surprised it took me so long to find this video on TH-cam. Thank You for posting I’ll be checking out your other Airsoft guns.
      Kind Regards,
      Pat

      @ApurtureSci  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I was *so* close to buying that Python! I kind of wish I had have, but went for their last Jupiter Model 327 R8 instead, same price as the Python. I'm hunting a 6" Jupiter Python now, so please let me know how you find yours, there isn't much info out there on them.

      ***** I'm really into compact pistols (or rifles or shotguns or SMGs) so I kinda had to have it. I'll certainly let you know how it is when it arrives, I just hope I can strip the orange paint off the muzzle without ruining the finish. I begged WGC to just friction fit an orange plastic cap onto the barrel like eHobby did with the 2" 327, but they insisted that they couldn't. Bah.

    • @ApurtureSci
      @ApurtureSci  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kobold Thief That's a shame, hopefully it'll scrape off quite easily. Paint doesn't here to Tanakas special finishes very well so it probably wont be too hard to remove! Can't find anywhere with a Jupiter 6" Python in stock annoyingly, must have been a small batch.

    got my hands on one with 5.5 inch barrel and the same finnishing. that awkward fork-looking key seems to be a cylinder locking tool - in my case it was locked and filling valve was hidden. and another strange thing - 2 out of 6 rubber gaskets which keeps the bbs in the cylinder seem to protrude by half out of the box...

    That's a very nice looking replica and so much better looking than the Umarex abomination that everyone is raving about. Proper front sight, no ridiculous "safety" catch, hammer that sits properly and a correctly sized and shaped grip.

    if you want to have a Colt SAA and keep it in its box and not shoot it, I would highly recommend the Uberti blank fire Cattleman, made from the same real parts as Uberti's Proper Colt Clone but they pin the cylinder and stagger the chambers and block barrel. But for all intents and purposes it is a real Colt weight for weight and the original parts fit it. £330. you can get a Pietta version too for £280, but I prefer Uberti.

    Just an fyi, plastic (as we know it anyway) didnt exist back then. Those black plastic grips are supposed to represent gutta percha, which was an early rubber. It was used quite a bit at the turn of the century. Any black grips on an old revolver are probably gutta percha.

    Hello, nice to meet a fellow Tanaka SAA enthusiast.
    I am currently smithing with mine (black HW/DC 4 3/4 inch) and inserting several real steel parts. If you're interested, I can tell which Colt real steel parts fit and how to smith them in correctly for longer durability.
    I also noticed that many internal crucial parts are made out of zinc, for example the bolt. This NEED to be replaced as it wears down very fast.
    Hit me up if you need any help!
    Phil

    • @ApurtureSci
      @ApurtureSci  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for the comment. I was aware that some RS parts would fit, but haven't tried any yet. To be honest I will probably never use this enough to wear down any of the parts, but I have heard elsewhere that a steel bolt helps durability a lot. All Tanakas have mostly zinc internals unfortunately, but RS parts will fit most of them. I have a few S&W internal parts in my other revolvers. What I could really use is a Colt trigger for a Detective Special/Police Positive Special - the Tanaka original trigger broke on me sadly. Anyway, thanks again, I'll get in touch if I need anything SAA related :)

    • @ApurtureSci
      @ApurtureSci  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The finish currently looks just as good as it did brand new. No signs of deterioration. in my experience it's the silver Jupiter finishes that tend to deteriorate due to the black HW plastic underneath.

  • @Videogametourist
    @Videogametourist 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you'd be so kind to reply. I recently discovered that there may or may not be a model of this gun that uses the ejector rod as a "magazine" to the cylinder. Giving it a capacity of about 18 shots? Can you confirm this or is this relatively unknown to you?

    • @ApurtureSci
      @ApurtureSci  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Videogametourist Yes, I think some of the Tanaka SAAs did indeed have a magazine in the loading tube. I believe these are the non-detachable-cylinder guns. The newer ones, including this Jupiter finish gun, have detachable cylinders for easy gas loading, whereas they used to be fixed in place. Personally I'd rather have the detachable cylinder since it's so much easier to do maintenance and load with gas. As I think I show somewhere in the video, you can put BBs in the ejector rod shroud, but they do not feed into the gun. You have to push them in one at a time with the ejector rod.

    Good Afternoon,
    Thank you for the in depth review. I was completely unaware that this airgun existed. I know that Japan is into airsoft in a big way from the excellent gun in my Tokyo Marui Tiger1 RC tank. Just as a heads up question, have you heard of a company called UMAREX? They have just released an astoundingly accurate replica of the Colt SAA that uses steel shot for ammo. Designed in partnership with Colt, it really is spectacular. I ordered one to give my 40+ year old Crosman SAA pellet revolver a rest. ;o)

    • @ApurtureSci
      @ApurtureSci  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the VCRA only applies to replicas post 1875, so technically this might pass as an older gun, but since the SAA (and copies) have been in production in the 140 years since it's introduction, I'm not sure if it would be considered an antique replica or not. To be honest, I'm not sure how strict customs really are with checking VCRA/defence details, I think if the package was clearly marked as 'Pre 1875 Replica, not VCRA controlled' etc. it should be ok. UK shops usually require you to provide site membership details etc., while overseas shops obviously don't care (this gun isn't sold in the UK).

    There was no plastic in 1873,but they did use vulcanite which is hardened rubber.

    • @ApurtureSci
      @ApurtureSci  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Early celluloid thermoplastics existed in the late 1860s, and natural polymers like rubber have obviously been around a lot longer, but yes you're right that hard rubber was used rather than a synthetic polymer. They kept the hard rubber all the way up until 1970.

    Unfortunately, I bought a more realistic FULL metal Colt SAA model from Umarex for 1/2 the money ($145 American). My Umarex like I said, is full metal (only plastic is the grips, which I replaced with real Walnut grips by Hoag for under $40), has a more realistic ratcheting 3 'click' sound (like a real one), has removable 'bullets' (to hold BBs or pellets)to simulate loading/reloading, a higher FPS, a more durable finish (4 choices, black, antiqued blue, chrome or nickel), and it is CO powered. And it came with a decent leather holster. The only feature it doesn't have is a removable cylinder. Don't get me wrong, this Tanaka seems like a good replica, but the Umarex is better all around, esp. for durability. I use my Umarex for indoor home training for Cowboy Action Quick-draw practice (I have 2 real .45 caliber SAAs I shoot in SAA competition) and I can shoot the Umarex either normally or fan it as hard as I want without risk of breaking it. I can't justify spending almost double the price for a less realistic, mostly plastic, less durable gun. That's my opinion. Very good and complete review and video. Thank you.

    • @ApurtureSci
      @ApurtureSci  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The problem with the Umarex model, as with all Co2 revolvers, is that the shape isn't right. The grip is too long and thin because of the need to fit the Co2 capsule, and the hammer doesn't sit right because of where the valve is. I'm very surprised that grips from a real SAA would fit it. It's still the better choice for most people, but the Tanaka is higher quality (even if plastic) and 1:1 dimensionally with the real one. I've also just noticed that the Umarex isn't assembled realistically and uses Philips screws to hold the frame together - for somebody who really appreciates detail, it's just not attractive.

    • @dirah3812
      @dirah3812 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the 4 clicks is actually the more realistic. real colt single action army revolvers had a distinct 4 clicks that is usually recognized by being able to spell "C.O.L.T." with the sound of the clicks

      These are quite close to that - this Jupiter Finish gun weighs 888g, which is just shy of 2 lbs. What would be even more realistic (and heavy) is a Plug Fire Cap gun. These are often built of metal and take metal shells. You can insert a cap into the shell for a bang when you pull the trigger, and the balance would probably be closer to that of a real SAA due to the metal parts.

      It certainly feels much better than regular ABS plastic since it is actually slightly cold to the touch. This is because the plastic has a thin metal plating (copper I believe) over it before the finish can be applied.

      Back in 2010-2011 you could get full metal upper frames and outer barrels for these.
      I took the plunge, expensive but worth it :)

    • @ToreDL87

      TheDastan96 Got a link? I`ll have a look-see.
      The parts I got were from Shooters design, but there was one other as well at the same time.
      CAW and Carom also made some stuff.
      I also highly recommend you get a 1st Generation real steel bolt, trigger and hand assembly, in the Tanaka these are made by Zinc alloy and wear out very fast, sand down (for better fitment) and install these real steel parts.
      Combine real steel parts with the Tanaka Colt Single Action Army and, contrary to what most airsofters think, you actually have a very skirmishable and durable single action airsoft :)

      you can find some very rare things on this website, search WA for western arms, they got good gas guns, but its an auction, second hand mostly, search for whatever you want and if you're lucky it will be there, if not, search again for it in a few days. I like this revolver but can you recommend any smaller ones that I might find? I don't like the big chunky ones. Here is another link: www.boomarms.com/shop/showroom.cfm

    So they made the gun, almost everything out of metal? But left the barrel plastic? Real brainiac design.

    • @ApurtureSci
      @ApurtureSci  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's Japanese, they can't make full metal handguns, therefore the barrel and receiver are plastic, the rest metal. I don't mind because all the areas you hold are metal.

      ***** Jesus! I did get a Pietta 1873 SAA for that price, in cap and ball version. That's the legal way to get real guns in Hungary (yeah, I live there). That's pretty much for an airsoft gun in my opinion. I don't mean any harm of course, it's a pretty cool "gun", and if you like airsoft, then Hell yeah, go for it! I'm just saying, you can get a real SAA for that price. Okay it's converted into a percussion revolver, but still a "real" thing, made of great quality steel, and firing bullets...

    • @ApurtureSci
      @ApurtureSci  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Katalin Vasvári In the UK you would need a section 1 firearm certificate for a cap & ball revolver. That means joining a shooting club, buying a gun safe, police interviews and evaluations, and it takes up to a year for the registration process. For attractive models that can also be shot for fun at home, I am happy paying this kind of money. You can get deactivated or blank fire Pietta/Ubertis here but they cost more than these replicas.

      Now that I think about it it's not worth it buying a tanaka that one of the most important parts are plastic and you could buy a pietta blank firer
      For the same price and its steel and wood and in England there is a shop called Henry krank in London and you could buy them there.

      Airsoft guns are designed to be shot at other people, so although it's a good idea to maintain basic firearm safety rules, they aren't nearly as important in this context and will be broken in typical use.

      I haven't spotted a difference, though I haven't seen them side by side. Either way I'm waiting for a Ux blue from freeads! Well priced and little used. (while we're talking I sent you a message asking which barrel extension did you get for the Toucan. I'd prefer a PX4 compact but don't know if the extension will fit the voluted barrel) And...what full bore are you shooting, I know of no pistol ranges that accept civvies? I miss the old days. Thanks for the contact.

      bob ellis bob ellis The size and shape of the grip look off to me, to accommodate the CO2 capsule. They're nice guns but just look a little odd in my eyes. All WE pistols with the internal threads on the outer barrel use the same adaper. I bought an aftermarket steel one because the WE ones are cheap cast metal and break easily. I shoot gallery rifle mostly, lever-actions in .357 and .44. I have a slot for a .357 long barrel revolver also. I have shot a number of handguns but only on trips to the US.

    • @dugan6056
      @dugan6056 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll give it closer scrutiny. Please don't give me the 'doubts', I've just shelled out £130!! I really like blued guns though. Did the extension come from Global as well?
      My father was a firearms dealer many years ago so I had access to a lot of guns when I was a kid (a Webley mk 6 lies somewhere at the bottom of the River Trent, the amnesty at the time had a lot of strings attached) Not much chance of growing up 'normal' when you're sired by a man who does the washing up with a loaded pistol in a shoulder holster!!
