@AlanR if you enjoyed the emotional family drama portrayed in this DUST video, then check out American daytime shows: "Days of our lives" and "General Hospital". They are both very long running and well respected tv series. They also have great character development and are full of heartfelt emotions WITH NONE of the low brow crudeness found on Jerry Springer. Hope you enjoy them as much as my grandma did 😘
This is a shining example of science fiction. No matter how far we travel into space, how great our scientific achievements, our greatest triumphs will always come from deep inside us. Great minds mean nothing without equally great hearts.
It's wonderful to see the Samoan recitation of the family line being spoken by the dying hero of the story, even though he was far far from home. Tradition and respect is important... wherever you are.
Ahh. Bloody hell. That one got me where it hurts. I have read many hundreds of SF books and watched as many films in the genre as I could. And yet with this film you managed to come up with an original take on the trope of the stranded/lost spacer. And not make it too predictable. Especially focussing on the parting with the family rather than the inevitability of him not making it back to safety. But what got me was the way you told the relationship with the main character and his dad. His dad just didn’t want to loose him and of course we find this out against an awareness that he is going to lose him. Simple but so brilliant... And as someone who is estranged from his father, it made my cry a little. That is the best compliment I can give a film. Thank you.
Aloha! Watched this from my home just outside Pahoa. How wonderful to see to see Kanaka Maoli in science fiction storytelling. The subtle ways Maoli culture and custom are embedded within the script were done with care and sensitivity, congratulations!
It's amazing the number of people, ever since humanity existed, that have travelled into the unknown to learn something or advance humanity's knowledge and welfare. Going to the North or South Poles were epic journeys. The travellers never knew if they would see their families again and many didn't. This film reminds us of that and ,shows us that there will always be people ready to make that journey into the unknown for the greater good. The first people that go to Mars will be among those travellers. This film gives us a glimpse into our future. Thanks.
Finally, a complete Dust story. A beginning that establishes the stakes, a middle that jumbs between the two times well, and an ending that makes sense, And Feels Like An Ending! Well done!
As a European New Zealander fortunate to have married into a Polynesian family (Samoan) I found it moving to witness a family drama familiar to me from my wife's family in Auckland juxtaposed with this science-fiction scenario. Something very Polynesian - down-to-earth, emotionally deep, and real - carried into a new world. Something ancient taken into the future. Well, Polynesians are navigators. Well done.
Thank you for making me cry. Not in a bad way... The whole time, I couldn't stop thinking of my own mother, who also passed away from cancer. I wish I could have spent more time with her, I thought there was more time....
I can't help but disagree with the opinion that some of these fantastic short films, so typical of Dust, should be made into full length features. This film for example is so perfect for it length and content that it would be spoiled if its emotional content were diluted. The short film which Dust so wonderfully showcases is an artform in its own right.
Well, I wasn’t expecting to be moved to tears after a 15 min sci fI film. That was beautiful, tragic, hopeful and real. Thank you so much for your excellent vision and creativity, high quality stuff - kudos.
Absolutely love how you interleaved the family story and the survival story. While the lead actor's time on screen was enjoyable, it was really Danielle Zalopany's performance that carried this drama over the line. Well done.
Good movie, a little hard to swallow at times while watching do to losing my own mother to Cancer and shortly after my father to a freak car accident. But all and all you showed great family values and really good visuals! The planet was pretty awesome, especially the part where he was walking through the tall red grass! Loved it!
And to me it reminded of Kaleva, which is a Finnish male name, and Kalevala (the famous Finnish epos). But I can see it is a word in Hawaiian meaning carriage.
Damn! That was damn sad. But he faced his Death with so much courage. A very thought provoking short. So many people either forget their family due to a whole host of reasons of hold on too tight. But where do you strike the balance between family and dreams.
He was using the spare. The lessons are much deeper and complex, about respecting those who love you and dedicating your life to somehing greater than you... something you could be satisfied to give your life for, if it ended up that way.
@@jv-lk7bc The lesson is simple - if you are reaching point of no return for your normal supply - you immediatelly turn around and return to base even if you have backup. This way, you don't need to think about what last words to say to those who you love and you can think about your life choices in proper environment, instead of being near death, or gamble (which is what he did) to push for "something greater than you" at the cost of your life. Safety comes first.
the station was like 100 feet away, but he didn't have oxygen to make it there.. but he had enough time to walk up a hill, plant the rod, and then talk for another five minutes? having strong flashbacks to trinity talking for 15 minutes at the end of the matrix 3 when she was impaled by 69 sticks of rebar.. could've solved that by making the station be like a mile away, but.. if this is the only thing i can criticize about this awesome short, then that's one hell of a great story. this was awesome!
This was great! Thank you for sharing it! It was so moving, (SPOILER FOR ANYONE READING) I was hoping for the last minute save, to me that shows how well done the main character was portrayed, but I totally respect that it ended the way it did. Great work to all involved and thanks again!
A Better late than never moment. Forgiveness is a powerful tool, that gets overlooked more often than not. The beauty of forgiveness is, it don't matter if others involved are aware. It's for your peace of mind. One may want to ask for forgiveness when looking too forgive though. Another takeaway I got was, live without regret, because tomorrow is never promised.
This is an amazing film. Shows us the true nature and human emotions when we are alone, on our own with only a computer voice to talk to. Sadden by the ending. At lease Mavis was there to guide him. Bravo on this.
Perfect on all levels, all domains: dialogues (human and with its AI-assistant-package), drama, emotionally, family, humanity, SF (Sci-Fi for USAmericans), especially A.I. and social.
Excellent short. The interplay between memory and the present was excellent, too. This was a complete story with a beginning, a middle and an end that is what it is and requires no maybes and no guesses. These entire stories are what keep me watching this channel.
It was way too early for this type of emotional rollercoaster. Now I’m crying and need to rewash my face to get ready to leave the house without looking like a complete bag of azz. 😭💕 Excellent. As always. I’m gonna go now. ✌🏻
Dang, reading some of these comments, I feel like I should have something profound to say...but I don't. I really enjoyed every aspect of this film, only wish it were longer! Thanks
Well done. This is definitely one of my favourite Dust shorts to date. This is what good sci-fi is all about imo. The problem with science fiction at times is that it can omit the human side of the story for clever ideas, what ifs and interesting theories. The best sci-fi incorporates both, since why it all matters is something that can only be distilled down to the human level and without that it's just a bunch of cool ideas but stripped of any underlying context or meaning. My only nitpick with this one is the timeline. Maybe if it had been placed in the 22nd century it even further down the line, it would help minimize that momentary loss of immersion. That and the solo nature of the expedition. Other than that it is very grounded and believable. We'll be lucky to make it to Mars in twenty years let alone another star system, but I digress. All in all, good stuff.
Amazing short. Both visually and story wise. Great cinematic scenes and score too. It’s hard to make a short to have your heart invested in the characters. And my God, that ending was soul splitting yet beautiful. Well done!
That was so good, but so sad. I know he didn't have a chance to make it back, but he should have kept walking back to the ship instead of laying down. You never know what could happen. Hope you guys make more movies. That was AWESOME!

It means drunk in Swahili and I love it. Big up

Thank you for treating the Dad's issues with losing his wife with respect and not dismissing or belittling them.
