- Speedruns are one of the niche but beautiful parts of gaming culture, but I have not seen it applied to board games and was feeling a little bit left out. So I decided to see if we can make speedrunning interesting with board games, starting with Catan.

As a fun thought experiment, I thought, "Hypothetically, how quickly can someone win a game of Catan if played perfectly and everything went their way?" After a lot of contemplation and tomfoolery, I made a video out of it. There is a lot of interesting things you can learn about the game from watching this, in addition to the actual goal of the video. Enjoy!

You can't play a dev card the turn you buy it. It's still doable I think since this only adds 1 more card to the total (2 brick 2 wood vs ore wheat sheep)
Apart from illegal trades (which can be circumvented via multiple stages of resources exchanging hands), you can't play the roadbuilding on the same turn you bought that card. I still like your videos though.

I see one flaw… I didn’t think you could trade 1 resource for the same resource.
You can trade for the same resource (I just doubled checked the manual). I've also seen it done with players trying to reduce the cards in their hand to avoid losing cards to a 7 roll. They would give 2 sheep for 1 sheep to drop hand size.
Yeah, you really "may not trade like resources (e.g. 2 wool for 1 wool)" (look at the Trade section in the almanac of the rule book for base Catan). But actually you can avoid this problem by doing multiply trading with the same player.
The more important issue "you may not playing a card [a development card] that you bought during the same turn" (look at Development Cards section). So, you can make your great video even greater by taking this into account. It would also be cool to get a more detailed overview of your final variant of Catan bord and the sequence of dice rolls, so that anyone could repeat your heroic winning at home.
As an idea - if the first player builds a city (or maybe two cities, if at all possible!) during the first turn, this player will generate a little more resources by the turn of the fourth player.

@@KenPlaysCatan Wrong, that is strictly illegal. You can trade any amount of cards, but you CANNOT trade Like for Like.
@@Lertush Yeah, the second someone pointed the development card out, I had a 'oh shit' moment. Ugh. I think I could have navigated it differently and still got the 1st turn result, but yeah agreed. And thanks for the thorough comment! I like the idea of city-ing another player up early for more cards, wonder how that math plays out.
It could still be possible! You needed 3 resources to buy the dev card for a road building. And you had one sheep left. Thats 4 cards in total. 2 brick and 2 wood as these 4 cards do the same job. I think you can find a way!

Was going to dislike the video but then saw the kidnapping option and was in 100%. Well thought out. However, a couple issues:
1. You cant use any DV cards on the same round you acquire them unless its a VP. The road building would have to wait till the next turn (either before or after roll IIRC) Maybe there is a way there where you still are able to build a settlement on first turn and get longest road prior to rolling your second roll.
2. I dont know if you can trade like for like resources. I dont believe you can, but it can be "house rules" since everyone in the table is bound to agree to that lol.
Major props for the ingenuity and finding a way. Enjoyed the video and will look for the more "serious" content.
Hahaha, it sounds like clickbait if not for that kidnapping option. And yeah, that road building was an especially big blunder. I feel like I could redistribute things so that I can avoid like for like and somehow also build two roads. Although seeing this through, I think there are a bunch of other ways to attempt this.
@@KenPlaysCatan lastly, I think that if someone was giving you 4 alike resources plus something else for 1 card they make a worse trade than 4:1ing it. If I was a judge, I'd also not let that pass (see the aforementioned 2021 final where Caleb would have basically given away 1 card for free). But I'm intrigued by your idea of making it possible!

Had to ham it up.
Upgrade to 1 city, build 3 roads for the longest road bonus. Draw 5 victory points......
You only need 3 brick and 3 wood for longest road. You already start with 2 segments.
If he goes last, that gives him 4 rolls. The most resources produced from 4 rolls is 24 resources amongst all players. That's 36 resources between 4 players. He trades 3 away (using combo trades to make it legal if needed) which leaves him with 33 res.
15 for 5 vps
6 for 3 roads- 2 vps
5 for 1 city- 2vp
Last vp from starting settlement.
All he would need is 26 res.
I'd hate to know how long that took to work out haha!

Does Catan allow you to trade for favours? Such as “I won’t build a settlement in this location you’re interested in if you give me your sheep” or “give me wheat or I’ll use my Knight development card on you”
No, you can't trade for a favor. But you can ADD a favor to an valid trade. "I'll trade you my sheep for your wheat AND I won't knight you." Although you don't have to follow through with that add-on. Check out my Trading video for more info!

You broke a couple rules here.
A) You can't trade Like for Like. At 3:40, Wheat travelled in both directions, and the next trade had Brick flow in both directions. And then again starting at 8:27 you did more illegal trades.
B) You bought a Road Building card, but you can't use it on the same turn as you bought it. The ONLY DV cards that can be 'used' on the same turn are the VP cards.
Hey Sebby! You are right, I flubbed a few things. The biggest one being using road building, can't believe I overlooked such an obvious one! As for like for like, I checked the manual, but it sounds like this is still illegal based on other sources.

Wait, you can't play multiple dev cards in one turn, nor can you play a dev card the turn you get it. Still a cool video but you couldn't win until you play all of those.
Darn, you're right. What an oversight! I would need to recalculate to instead have those 2sheep/1ore/1wheat be a wood/brick.
Only the second point is actually an issue; victory cards don't get played, they just count towards your total. But yeah the road building card is still an illegal play
While you are right that DV cards, the VP cards are the exception to that rule. You can 'play' as many as you have, if they give you the win. Including on the turn you bought it.

5x dev cards + 2 cities + 1 settlement = 10 victory points!
Making 3 cities grants you 11 victory points (6 + 5)?
