Thank you so much for such a clear explanation of the pros and cons and how to use this flash set up. Being new to flash photography, I find it overwhelming.
Nice review Stewart! A question: if you have just one flash on, can you position the flash at 45 degrees without the ring rotating? ie can you walk around & shoot without worrying about it rotating out of say a 45 degree position? Cheers Tim
The versatility like you dont need to use them on the ring but can place them as backlights etc. makes them quite interesting. I might be in the market for a pair +
Hi Stewart. Thanks for an excellent review. I'd not come across you channel before until I was searching for a review of the MF12's. I like what I see on your channel so will subscribe. Two things.. 1) your comment about the modelling lights and having to manually turn them on. If the MF12's are anything like my other Godox lights, you should be able to turn on the modelling lights via the remote head unit instead of having to manually trigger all of the buttons on the flash heads themselves. It's still a manual button push but it is just one button push instead of multiple ones. 2). I would be really interested in the modification videos you mentioned in your review. Look forward to seeing more content with the MF12's. Thanks
I went with the X2t godox trigger, not sure if the xPro has the option, the modeling lights can be turned on and off with a tap on the controller even if you set the two heads to separate channels. The X2t is slightly cheaper, but you lose the huge screen, though you still have the hot shoe on top and blue tooth to your phone. Wife and I have been using godox v860ii speed lights for a while now. The mf12 has been a great addition. Only thing that bugs me is the adapter ring holds onto the filter of the laowa 100 stronger than the lens does. We look forward to seeing more videos. Love your channel. Hope you are feeling better.
That was a Great Review Stewart, 🤔but I'm not so sure about those however, now that I've seen your review, but I have to say, that is probably the most patient well trained Jumping Spider I've ever seen 😂, how on earth did you manage to not only keep it there, but stop it from hiding from the camera?, it seemed to actually enjoy having its picture taken 😂😂
Great vid!!! How would you compare this flash with the Meike Twin flash? I am looking for one for dental photography I have a Nikon D750 and a Tokina macro 100mm. Any suggestion would be very highly appreciated. Thank you so much 😊
on the modeling light, I know on other godex strobes I can activate the modeling light via a button on the remote. do these not respond to the remote modeling trigger?
I have Godox TX2 which I use with my AD600Pro, if I am not wrong, it has an option in menu somewhere to turn on the modeling bulb/lights, though I don't use the option. I prefer to control the lamps manually.
If you read through your controller book , you should be able to set and switch on the modelling lights from your remote , have a good read I'm sure you can ..
I am thinking of The Godox mf 12 to replace my Yongnou 24ex . I have had two of these and both seem to have developed a tryistor failure and would only shoot at full power. One returned one out of warranty. Have you had the problem with the Yongnou and would you recommend the G mf12 over the Y EX24. Big thank you for keeping me motivated.
Another great video. Well done. Speaking of the flashes... I love the product, but I agree with you that it needs better diffusion. Look forward to your next video to see what you come up with. (Hopefully it will be something I can order in the US.)
I have been shooting 1:1 macro for a while, but only in natural light. I have recently purchased a Laowa 90mm 2:1 & now i think it's time to get in to flash. I am looking at buying an MF12 twin setup, but am unsure which trigger to get. Im pretty certain you can use either of the X2T-S or the XPro. (sony shooter) I like the idea of the extra hot shoe on the X2T. Can you tell me. Is it the trigger that allows you to use high speed sync? I assume this setup will have HSS? What reason did you pick the XPro? Thanks for the channel, it's extremely informative.
Have been looking forward to this video and future ones with this set up. Pretty sure this is what I’ll order just want to see your thoughts on it after using it a but.
Where have you been ? It's almost 2 weeks since the last video . I hope you are ok . I hope you make a video comparison between godox mf 12 and Youngnuo twin flash 🙏
Hi Ahmd, I'm fine just had some issues to deal with plus I've been testing a new lens out but only had two weeks to do it in so I concentrated on that but because of an NDA I can't publish the videos yet! Thank you for your concern, much apricated :)
I would buy these, if there is a possible solution to get more diffusion on them. Looking at where the ring connects, it doesn't look like there is much space to add any thing on them to make it a larger light source. I could be wrong though, I'm sure Stewart will find a way!!!
Hi Stewart, great video i have ordered mine they are coming tomorrow, i just noticed you keep saying TTL as opposed to canons ETTL, should i set my in camera to TTL as i noticed the godox menu says TTL but your info on the photos says ETTL, im slightly confused. thanks mate.
@@StewartWoodArt but you are right in the sense the menu on the godox does say TTL and canons menu also has TTL & ETTL so i guess i should set it the same as the godox TTL and not ETTL?
@@StewartWoodArt the reason i ask is some people are saying TTL on the flash over exposes and they set it to manual you cant have camera on ETTL and flashes on TTL so im assuming you set BOTH camera and flash to TTL?
If you just want small flash buy Meike MK-320 instead of this! With 4$ diffuser it can create magic macro photos! The Twin-Flash for "traditional" is just a loose of money for me.
It's another knockoff of the Nikon R1C1 system and that front ring is so big it really gets in the way. Best to attach the flashes to small arms and that gives space for a diffusing layer and softer light. Otherwise light is way too harsh and specular reflections very bright. I stopped using my R1C1 flashes long ago due to those issues. And not being able to swap batteries in the field is a big no-no for anyone who goes on multi-hours shoots. I like Godox in general and use their flashes and X1T (very reliable) but a single cheap flash and concave diffuser might just do the job
I might be a good flash, but .... Who is going to pay it for me? My wife won't, nor anyone else. It is VERY expensive item! I love the idé of freedom, to move around the flash ect. but again, it come with a very nasty pricetag, so us that can't afford this, must go and find another solutions. Thank you for GREAT reviews! You are doing it wonderful good!

I am a dentist , and i was looking for a Macro flash other than the Ring flash , your videos helped me very much , Thank you
You are welcome!
Thanks for this Stewart. My MF12 kit from Pixapro arrived yesterday. Now to get to testing and using productively

Yep there is a modelling light button on the X-Pro too.
Just got the setup and found the same modeling light switch can turn on both lights

Another great vid Stew thx. Any idea what the refresh rate is , maybe at one-eighth power?
Probably the trigger can turn on/off the focusing LED? Like the modeling lamps in several Godox strobes.
If you read through your controller book , you should be able to set and switch on the modelling lights from your remote , have a good read I'm sure you can ..
You can turn them on and off via the controller but I wanted them to come in as I half press the shutter like the yongnuo twin flash does.
@@StewartWoodArt a missed opportunity from godox then 👌
Can these flashes be used for product and flowers
What are the chargers like to use and do you need chargers for the lights and the trigger?
Trigger is run by AA batteries and the flash heads are charged via USB C cable.
Fantastic review! On subject and very clear!
Thank you.

Get wired flashes, no need to spend extra money. Use flashes with power adjustment.
I prefer the freedom of wireless, wired flashed are too clumberson and restrictive.
