- The BPC MKI Tone Bender is a detailed replica of the original 1965 Metal Case Tone Bender pedal created by Gary Hurst in London, England. The BPC MKI features the same transistor specification as the original so includes 1x OC75 + 2x 2G381 this configuaration has a unique tone which cannot be replicated by the often offered 3xOC75 version. It was this version which found its way into the hands of artists such as Jeff Beck, Pete Townsend and Mick Ronson and can be heard on many classic tracks such as 'Hang onto yourself' and 'Moonage Daydream'.

The Beatles also used that in the studio. Gary Hurst gave one of the prototypes to John Lennon from what I saw on a documentary.
The Beatles are photographed testing out this model (together with Hurst) at a pre-show rehearsal in late-1965, but this event took place after Rubber Soul was recorded, and there's no primary source for the Beatles using this model in the studio. The Beatles were, however, photographed in the studio with a 'MK1.5' Tone Bender, in 1966.
How is this possible when mk 1.5 tonebenders were never labeled as such and the moniker mk 1.5 is a modern invention by collectors and enthusiasts. There was not a single tonebender sold as a 1.5 in the 60’s. I’m not saying you’re wrong but I am saying a picture could not serve as proof of this bc it wouldn’t have said 1.5 on it. Are you sure it isn’t the pep box which is photographically documented in the studio with the Beatles. Again, maybe they had tonebenders, I’m not sure, I am sure however that no original tonebenders were labeled 1.5 and the only way for anyone to tell would have been for them to open it at the time and count the number of transistors. I am not a Beatles expert and only know a little about fuzz. Just not sure how a picture could prove that.
@@andrewhartnett2140 uh, indeed, 'MK1.5' Tone Benders weren't formally labelled as such. It's why I wrote its moniker in quotes, because it is exactly as you say, a modern designation. That doesn't mean that the model didn't exist in the 1960s though. We describe these two-transistor Tone Benders as 'MK1.5's' because they don't have any formal marking.
Sometimes you don't need a photo of the guts of a pedal to be able to take a very good guess as to what's inside. The reason why we can be almost completely certain about the 'MK1.5' in the Beatles photo is that the photo was taken in early 1966, which is well before the MKII came about. (Sources: date codes in MK1.5's prove that they were still being built by May 1966, if not later; scrutiny of the parts selection in 1966 Tone Benders strongly suggests that the MK1.5 was discontinued in place of the MKII; the MKII was only first advertised in the press in November of that year.)

I don’t dispute their manufacture. Only that there is proof of the Beatles using one. I’m familiar with the history. Macari (spelling) himself is only somewhat clear on their timeline. Obviously two transistor tone benders were made. But I’m not sure about proof the Beatles used one. That’s all. Either way they still sounded great. Link provided is only a historical timeline of development. Still no proof of Beatles using it. Doesn’t really matter in the end. They sounded pretty good regardless. Cheers.
Not saying it can’t be true either. Plenty of their records have the tone bender “sound”. I doubt I could pick a two transistor from a three transistor fuzz “in the mix”. Also, for arguments sake, if people used the exterior of a given Hendrix fuzz for reference to what’s inside they would be misled often bc Mayer modified so many of them. That would make me cautious of using the box for identification as well. You could me right mate. Either way it all works out in the end. Cheers.

I’d say a big muff but it’s not the same. Tonebenders are just unique.
As a pedalbuilder, there’s no modern pedal equivalent to a tonebender. Also, a big muff is technically not modern. It was invented in 1969. If anything, the tonebender shares very similar design to the fuzz face, however they are still different.

@@infectionsman Are you familiar with any similar sounding fuzz pedal that has this sound? I like the way it punches through with clarity. Many fuzz pedals are too muffled sounding. No way in hell I'm paying $450 for a pedal with only one function.
I cant say for sure. But I personally love a vintage style PNP fuzz face. You can build one with just a few components. If you can find a couple AC128 transistors they used to go for like 5-10$. Then add a couple 100k trimpots to set the bias for them can help getting the sound you want. And you can add a switchable series cap on the input to clean up the mud when using high levels. Something in the range of 10nF - 1nF.

Scroll down to the part about biasing, the schematic on the right is the one with 100k trimmers added.
It has the desired voltages written.
Then if you want you can add the extra 1nF capacitor right between the input jack and the first capacitor. You can install a 500k Log potentiometer and connect its lugs 1&2 to each side of the extra capacitor so it will bypass it gradually when turning the pot. A "tight" controll basically.
You can start with this stripboard design it is a very simple design:

You have to remember the + and ground wires have to be reversed though since the AC128 is a positive-ground circuit.
And also just make the board a little larger so it can fit the 2 trimmers. The extra cap can be soldered on the tight pots lugs to save space on the board.
You need to buy/borrow a cheap DMM to take voltage readings. And you need some basic soldering tools and skills.

Only fool pay $1300 for a stomp box,I know there's alot fools out there trying to be page n Beck etc. Be yourself everyone else is taken....these are great pedals,but you can build one for about 30$ enough info out there n transistors from era...
