  • The Old Outboard Book author, Peter Hunn, takes one of his '28 Speedsters for a run. The video begins in Hunn's shop with a bit of history and moves to starting/running the vintage motor on Lake Champlain. To learn more about old outboarding, see the Antique Outboard Motor Club's site aomci.org

Nice video not to jealous of anyone or their money. But you look like your having to much fun. I knew a trapper who had a elto to go 50 miles to his cabin in the 1930s. When I grew up in the 1960s outboards were so important to the way we lived. Hunting fishing exploring we’re the things we did. When I was 14 i bought a 19 ft W+C canoe and a used 9.9 Johnson the short fat model. I’ve had many since and I think is one of the great pleasures of life a small boat out on the water. Thanks

oh the old 9.5 "turtle" or "pumpkin-seed" motors. a real pain to work on but ran great and fairly reliable. downdraft carb didn't do it any favors, however. the linkage setups for those were almost comically over-engineered!

I have an old 4hp opposed twin Neptune. Would love to score something a bit bigger. Such an interesting little motor engineering is fascinating

That was outstanding ! I’d be afraid to use that motor . Scary. I’m sure the planets and stars had to be aligned just to start it. And at that cost that baby wasn’t cheap in the day. Thanks for the video. Makes me realize how lucky I am today !

I love the engineering and obvious reliability. You get the feeling people 100 years ago lived in the stone ages...not so.

What do you suggest for the battery? 6volts can it just be any 6 volt battery for the ignition. Just received a 1926 Elto Rudder-Twin. Or does it have to be a battery box? where would I find something like that. Thanks, Ryan

Hi Peter old member of the AMOCI Yankee chapter NY here. I on a personal mission for trying to find anything on a 1940s recoil version Evinrude Ranger. I have all your books and I think I have something quite unusual here. I have a mint restored Ranger in my living room, as far as I and everyone else from the Club knows they only came with a sheet metal aluminum tanks which are normally all dented up. I recently came across a barn which burned down in the 1950s and in the dirt I found a fully copper Evinrude Ranger tank! I have plenty of pics I could email you if you sent me your email address? I don't know of anyone nor in the 18 yrs of collecting and restoring has anyone ever heard of this phenomenon!!!??? Maybe you have?? BUT I'd be happy to hear your opinion, it still had a touch of aluminum paint on it in some spots but I've cleaned it up and can't believe how mint it is! Flawless no dents or dings, it's also extremely heavy, like upwards of 8-9lbs of copper. I've talked with my old friends Doug Penn and Bob Grubb on this already, I felt I needed to speak to you now. Thanks in advance, hope this reaches you? Best regards Jim Ciancio.
