Sea King Clinton Outboard
Though not a particularly exciting old outboard, the small Clinton-built Sea King singles are easy to find, inexpensive to buy, and can be made to run without a lot of complicated tools. Peter Hunn, author of The Old Outboard Book, demonstrates the virtues of an early 70's Sea King 2-hp kicker that someone dumped at the end of his driveway.

The Old Outboard Book author, Peter Hunn, takes one of his '28 Speedsters for a run. The video begins in Hunn's shop -with a bit of history- and moves to starting/running the vintage motor on Lake Champlain. To learn more about old outboarding, see the Antique Outboard Motor Club's site aomci.org

    Nice video not to jealous of anyone or their money. But you look like your having to much fun. I knew a trapper who had a elto to go 50 miles to his cabin in the 1930s. When I grew up in the 1960s outboards were so important to the way we lived. Hunting fishing exploring we’re the things we did. When I was 14 i bought a 19 ft W+C canoe and a used 9.9 Johnson the short fat model. I’ve had many since and I think is one of the great pleasures of life a small boat out on the water. Thanks

      oh the old 9.5 "turtle" or "pumpkin-seed" motors. a real pain to work on but ran great and fairly reliable. downdraft carb didn't do it any favors, however. the linkage setups for those were almost comically over-engineered!

    I have an old 4hp opposed twin Neptune. Would love to score something a bit bigger. Such an interesting little motor engineering is fascinating

    This is a nice video. Else, I recently purchased for $90 two old outboards where one was a 1971 Clinton J300 with the Box type shroud (mystery outboard) and the other a 1951 Sea King 5hp 15GG-9015. I got both running with a few days of effort.

    I have one of these. Runs like a raped ape. Interestingly it seems to have some pickup tube near the prop that forces cooling water to the bottom of the crankcase.

    I love the engineering and obvious reliability. You get the feeling people 100 years ago lived in the stone ages...not so.

    That was outstanding ! I’d be afraid to use that motor . Scary. I’m sure the planets and stars had to be aligned just to start it. And at that cost that baby wasn’t cheap in the day. Thanks for the video. Makes me realize how lucky I am today !

    What do you suggest for the battery? 6volts can it just be any 6 volt battery for the ignition. Just received a 1926 Elto Rudder-Twin. Or does it have to be a battery box? where would I find something like that. Thanks, Ryan

    Hi Peter old member of the AMOCI Yankee chapter NY here. I on a personal mission for trying to find anything on a 1940s recoil version Evinrude Ranger. I have all your books and I think I have something quite unusual here. I have a mint restored Ranger in my living room, as far as I and everyone else from the Club knows they only came with a sheet metal aluminum tanks which are normally all dented up. I recently came across a barn which burned down in the 1950s and in the dirt I found a fully copper Evinrude Ranger tank! I have plenty of pics I could email you if you sent me your email address? I don't know of anyone nor in the 18 yrs of collecting and restoring has anyone ever heard of this phenomenon!!!??? Maybe you have?? BUT I'd be happy to hear your opinion, it still had a touch of aluminum paint on it in some spots but I've cleaned it up and can't believe how mint it is! Flawless no dents or dings, it's also extremely heavy, like upwards of 8-9lbs of copper. I've talked with my old friends Doug Penn and Bob Grubb on this already, I felt I needed to speak to you now. Thanks in advance, hope this reaches you? Best regards Jim Ciancio.

    I think i baught one just recently!? I'm not sure though there's no markings or company logo on it!? It looks very similar to this. The juice can is cylindrical like yours the throttle is on the motor close to on the left as showed in 4:19 as well as the choke. It doesn't run but its not seized either I don't know what's wrong with it though. I'm gonna go through everything and check every piece.

    @rocket99dan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can adjust the main jet using the knurled knob at the bottom of the fuel bowl. About a quarter turn out should let you run full throttle without using the choke.

    Just 2 years later (2018) I had to give $ 100 for a non running motor that was very simular. 1963 Eska Skipper 3.0 hp. Tecumseh (Just like Clinton) 2 stroke powered. And I shopped believe it or not.

    I am curious what the number stamp is on your outboard here. I have a K350 3106A. Very similar looking to this except the "juice can" is a plastic with more square shape and a flat plate in indicating the throttle and choke-run positions. I am assuming what have is a 3.5 HP? Do you know if the "3106A" indicates this was a produced for Montgomery Wards?

      Hey Peter. I have one of these as well. It was in my wife's grandmother's attic. I am trying to find out what the oil mixture is that you used. I do have a more complete motor than this one.

      @falconthefox 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daniellothamer8776 Mine has a decal on the "juicecan" saying to use 1/2 pint SAE 30wt per gallon, which seems to work very well for me. I have mine on a 1966 MFG Car top fisherman and it can get that fiberglass sled up to 5-6 knots.

    Thanks for keeping it real, and showing that outboards don't always start of the first pull (I'm always suspicious that the engine was "warm" when I see a one-pull start video)!!!
