Ford will soon build Ranger Raptor Orca. Orca will eat that Shark😂😂😂😂😂 Big question? Maintenance cost? How many years would the battery last? Cost of Battery and other parts? Availability of the Parts? How many years of Warranty?
Interesting comparison. I would go the Ford over the BYD if the prices were competitive. However, they are not, so I would be tempted top sell my aging Landcruiser and opt for the BYD. The power and torque are much more than my current tow vehicle and my caravan is 2.4 tonne fully laden, so just squeaks in.
What are you talking about? If the price is the same, Ford will lose more ugly. When BYD sells for the same price as Ford, it will give you an additional space capsule.
BYD are also providing the Hybrid System for the Toyota Corolla. And Toyota saw the writing on the wall last year when they said that Hybrid was the future. One of those 3 230v sockets in the tray is 15AMP. The rest are 10AMP like the one in the centre consol.
@@michaelhermans4753 the other/better way to put it: byd shark is an EV with a petrol generator, while Ranger is a traditional combustion truck with a small battery.
Considering the price, this isn’t really a fair comparison to begin with. If you offer me one of these two Utes, I'll hesitate. But if I have to buy it with my own money, it's Shark without a doubt.
I think the BYD’s 4WD capabilities are a bit of an unknown - the ability for software to modulate power in a dual motor AWD system can be very very effective, so if they get that right then it might be as good as or better than the Ranger. The Shark’s ability to DC fast charge also gives it quite an edge as well. Personally I prefer the interior/exterior of the Ranger, but the Shark’s price/specs are very compelling.
Even if you don’t want to buy a BYD Shark but interested in the utes, this Shark should shake up the ridiculous pricing in this segment, Ford being the worst offender, giving us mediocre tech and charging a premium. They will either need to up their game reduce their price points, particularly with the higher end lifestyle range. $100k for Ford Ranger is freaking laughable.
I've been a truck owner for a long as I can remember. And not once I've ever towed anything. The Shark checks all the important boxes for me. I'm completely sold on it
What's the aftersales support like with BYD? Ford's is shite here in the UK (IMO) so if BYD can get this right too, then they'll be a force to be reckoned with!
the electric range ~100km of the Shark will be hard to beat by the american brands on a pick up. Extended range on the Shark makes it beautiful for long trips ... I like the Ranger but with this competition/features... BYD may be my next truck.
A Brazilian car reviewer shows the Mexican Shark's V2L output in the rear tray is 6kw at 110-volt maximum, wonder if it would be different for the Australian version.
The GWM Cannon (or Tank 500) PHEV seem to be the sweet spot between these two, with 3 tonne towing and 100km EV range. And yeah 3x diff locks and low range, so better off road potentially than even the Ranger…
The 3.5 tonne towing capacity being promoted by the press and manufacturers is potentially dangerous - how is it safe for a 2.2 tonne vehicle towing 3.5 tonnes?
@richardcharlton8259 Towing capacity of the chassis (maximum amount of mass the vehicle can pull) is different to towing performance. Good luck to anyone that will try to push it to the limit , I agree. We are just talking about different things.
It's a piece of middle school physics knowledge that towing a trailer only requires more force than the force of friction rather than the force of gravity on the trailer.
On power, we spotted in a Brazilian video a 6kw max output across 3 10a points in the tray. You can already get 16a peak from the bidirectional charge point on some models, so there’s a strong possibility of more power from the Shark with a vtol adapter
I have a caravan so the BYD is not an option with its 2.5tonne towing. Please do a tow test with the BYD shark though when released. Towing its 2.5 tonne limit on a decent long trip with some hills etc so we can see how it goes once the batteries are low
I like both of them. The phev battery size is disappointing and smaller than 10-year-old house batteries. But it has that 3.5t tow rating and could still power your work or camp site for hours.
I'd love to be able to buy a series hybrid, AWE, fully independent suspension small pickup truck in the USA, but a possible future Ranger PHEV is a step in the right direction.
I dont really need too much towing power and load capacity, I just want a large storage space for my outdoor sports equipment. and traditional pickup consume too much oil in my mind. so on paper Shark really fit my requirements. but I currently have a Chinese 7 seats version Ford Edge, and I have always preferred Ford chassis. so we will see.
BYD all the way. If you like camping it seems to be a winner, use the engine to arrive at 70%, you're good for the weekend, induction cooking, fridge, heater overnight... no brainer for me. I just wait to see it on the road a couple of times, early adopters pay a price I can't afford :D
If the Shark had 3.5t towing capacity it would be on my list. I have a decent sized boat and need the tow capability. I was a little disappointed the Shark only has 2.5t, but it shows the EV brigade is getting close to a serious 4WD for people that tow big loads and dont want, or cant afford a LandCruiser or a huge american tank ute.
I watched an US reviewer's video on BYD Shark yesterday, and in it they mentioned Shark overall is overwhelmingly good, way better than they thought it would be, but BYD may faces some brand-loyalty issues in the States if they manage to get in, since Toyota, Nissan, Ford etc etc have dominated the market for years. I say, they know nothing about consumers, unless you are a millionaire buying a Mercedes S600, then the logo surely means everything. Otherwise, brand means nothing in front of cost-effectiveness and your wallet.
Shark 100% - not a ford fan generally, but way better value for money, and larger EV range. Couldn't care less about towing capacity. Love the tech the shark is throwing in, hate how ute's always have to have dull interior's
I'm pretty sure the electric dual motor system in Shark have automatic torque vectoring for both axels, which is basically an auto-locking smart differential. With +280mm clearance I can't wait to see how will it perform off-road. Not having to wire up separate battery system etc. simplify so much for most non-hardcore offroaders.
It is comfort, relax, quiet and powerful for EV vehicles. Full option for standard car price is too attractive and everyone can't resist to take them home. Poor that American do not have a chance to get one.
Like most people in New Zealand, I've never towed anything of significance. Towing capacity means nothing to me. Shark 6 for me easy. I'd be embarrassed to be one of those tradie knobs who run around in a Ranger.
When I worked in computer sales we talked about vapourware. All unreleased products were amazing in every specification. Upon release we were all a little disappointed. Let’s wait to see what Ford actually release for sale to the public before we complete our judgement
Prices for this type of vehicle are well out of the reach for most people!....$90,000 for a Ford UTE? I'd take the BYD any day but can't afford that either.
DMO tech is miles better as the engine is not powering the wheel but use to charge the battery. Traditional engine loss 70% of energy while delivering drivetrain and the DMO has energy loss 20%. Stunning tech
The ranger can tow 7500 lbs no matter what the state of charge of the battery has. What I want to know is what can the Shark tow when the battery is depleted?
From the day the Ranger PHEV was announced, most people were saying 45km wasn't enough. At $40k cheaper, with 320KW & 80km EV only range, the BYD Shark will probably make the Ranger PHEV DOA.
it's got a great big battery under the floor that doesn't like knocks. Go rock crawling in this thing and watch the fire. If you are a city only driver that wants a 4x4 ute....well good luck to you! I have a giggle at this pro EV site! NO person wanting to go "bush" for an extended period will buy an electric/PHEV ute!
Love the concept of both … however when towing and hauling, once the BYD battery is depleted you are left with a measly 135kw 260nw engine Vs 222kw 452nw in the Ford. Plus the BYD is morbidly obese, or very heavy … so horses for courses I guess. Can you get away with a 40klm range and plug-in every night whilst in town with better driving dynamics and the backup of a strong engine for touring … or, go with the BYD with the convenience of a much bigger battery for around town and no problem if you forget to plug-in every night, plus a bigger battery which in theory should last longer as it loses energy density over its lifetime.
You don’t need low range in the Shark 6 because it’s electrically driven. Electric motors have 100% torque from Zero rpm. The engine “can” send power to the front axle but only at 70km/h & above.
BYD build your dream to many it will as price and what it delivers are ideal from over priced trucks or at least BYD would give there competitors a second thought in pricing
In Mexico shark has a starting price for $53K equivalent for a midsize which is honestly a lot higher than I expected. I expected something in the $35K or at most mid $40K range (starting price of a Tacoma hybrid). Remember in Mexico a base Hilux starts at $20K equivalent while crew cab with diesel start at $30K or so BYD is twice as much Yet its towing and payload a lot less, no solid axle means it is never gonna be as off-road capable. It uses e-CVT rather than traditional torque converter automatic. Its 30kwh or so battery is stored not in the interior like the Wrangler 4XE or TNGA-F product but outside underneath the cab. So repairing and replacing on that battery will take longer and cost more money. Some of the biggest problem of the BYD DMO platform. This is not the game changer that some people hyped up to be
you cant talk abut the ranger being the benchmark because there isnt in reality. first it has to be in the road, selling and everything. I think every maker is wrong because there is not power outlets globally speaking, i think it makes a lot more sense, having a built in combustion generator with your car to power the batteries, then when its standard a charger every 100km internationally theeen you go full electric.
The ratings for V2L and the rear power socket are different. The Shark, V2L is 6kw's. I'm not sure about the power socket because it's different for 110v and 220v. V2L comes from the charging point and I don't think the Ranger has that.
Brilliant that BYD can throw a shark amongst the pigeons. If Ford want to survive, they’ll need to drop their pricing to match. Competition is great for the consumer! 🥳
China just signed a deal with all of the countries in African, this gives their car maker 2.5 billion low income consumers to build cars for and this will include building more car factories in Africa like VW, Ford, GM and other do. So I expect the Chinese will be bringing out cars starting from $5k including 2WD drive Utes and 4WD from $20k. Given Africa's diesel & petrol distribution is poor I expect EV's to outsell ICE. Going to be an interesting year and don't forget it took BYD only one year to build a car plant in Thailand.....
Believe it or not, there is actually food for thought in some comments. I was a firm believer the BYD was better platform, still think it maybe but currently its all speculation from a viewers prospective but saucy corner boy has seen a BYD Shark in its entirety, sat in it, smelt it, feeled it so he has an insight we're yet to experience. I myself want that same insight. Bring it on BYD, give us the same insight.
Well, as the owner of both Toyota Corolla hybrid and BYD Han Dmi, I think I have enough experience with HEV/PHEV. You must compare the output of engine when talking about hybrid cars, because the car cannot stay at maximum output power for long
Off reading use full regen on the Shark, you'll leave the petrol dopes far behind, Ford is having MAJOR engine issues with turbo hybrids, leave them for a couple years.
I'm ready to preorder the byd shark, BUT, I need a Ute with either a canopy or a tub roller / cover, no matter how hard I've searched I can't even find a single picture of any of the sort for the byd shark, that will be the only thing stopping me ordering it when I can 😬
no it wont, at least not in Australia. Australian ute buyers a snobs when it comes to brands. If it doesn't have a Ford to Toyota badge, then it wont sell in mass numbers, regardless of how good the competition is.
Unlike a lot of city 4wd people I actually need a proper 4WD that can tow 3.5T with a proper tray back with toolboxes and ladder racks. Inverter is nice (I have a 3.5kW in my car now) Much prefer the A/C to have knobs Not real impressed with the dashboard as a computer screen. Maybey when it can come as a cab chassis I will look at it Until then its Dmax all the way. How much water can this thing handle?? Interesting comparison. I would go the Ford over the BYD if the prices were competitive. However, they are not, so I would be tempted top sell my aging Landcruiser and opt for the BYD. The power and torque are much more than my current tow vehicle and my caravan is 2.4 tonne fully laden, so just squeaks in.
Agree. If they were the same price I would buy the Ford

To the millions of Americans, it really doesn't matter, as they don't have to right to buy a BYD Shark anyway !
exactly. just a decently programmed electric AWD system would easily trump any ICE system.
their Fanchengbao brand's Bao 5 has seen a lot of offroading, and it also uses electric AWD
Plus, when the battery runs out, the front tyres won't drive
Even if you don’t want to buy a BYD Shark but interested in the utes, this Shark should shake up the ridiculous pricing in this segment, Ford being the worst offender, giving us mediocre tech and charging a premium. They will either need to up their game reduce their price points, particularly with the higher end lifestyle range. $100k for Ford Ranger is freaking laughable.
I don't have to tow a small tank, so I'd probably go for the BYD. That and the 30kWh battery is seriously tempting.
I've been a truck owner for a long as I can remember. And not once I've ever towed anything. The Shark checks all the important boxes for me. I'm completely sold on it
The vast majority of utes in Australia are pavement princesses
Give me power? BYD OK ! 👍
And this is their absolute weakest Hybrid engine/battery combo - expect a 505kw 760nm version at its first update.
The BYD Charge socket plug is power to load. Not just accessory sockets.
What's the aftersales support like with BYD? Ford's is shite here in the UK (IMO) so if BYD can get this right too, then they'll be a force to be reckoned with!

The GWM Cannon (or Tank 500) PHEV seem to be the sweet spot between these two, with 3 tonne towing and 100km EV range.

@@JohnOskay good luck when you are towing a3.5 ton caravan over taking a semi trailer with a 2.2 ton Ute

I have a caravan so the BYD is not an option with its 2.5tonne towing. Please do a tow test with the BYD shark though when released. Towing its 2.5 tonne limit on a decent long trip with some hills etc so we can see how it goes once the batteries are low

I don’t need to tow over 2 1/2 t and I drive less than 80 km a day. Will be interested to see how they go after two years of hard use. I’m interested.
Byd Shark for my money. The drive train in the Ranger is antiquated compared to the Shark. The extra range is also really handy.

Both will be unsuitable for any serious off-roading. 500km range is a minimum for far north.
Different applications of electrification. Ranger has a real traditional 4x4 driveline for those that need it.
BYD build your dream to many it will as price and what it delivers are ideal from over priced trucks or at least BYD would give there competitors a second thought in pricing
winner is BYD shark 🤩
In Mexico shark has a starting price for $53K equivalent for a midsize which is honestly a lot higher than I expected. I expected something in the $35K or at most mid $40K range (starting price of a Tacoma hybrid). Remember in Mexico a base Hilux starts at $20K equivalent while crew cab with diesel start at $30K or so BYD is twice as much
Yet its towing and payload a lot less, no solid axle means it is never gonna be as off-road capable.
Yeah, that very slow adaption into electrification by the legacy brands could be a real threat to those brands, it really doesn't look good
China just signed a deal with all of the countries in African, this gives their car maker 2.5 billion low income consumers to build cars for and this will include building more car factories in Africa like VW, Ford, GM and other do.
