The beautiful thing about Tool's lyrics is that Maynard writes them into the song after Adam, Danny and Justin compose the music. Its simply amazing how he can write the lyrics to fit the music perfectly.
"Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift his eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here" I've got this line tattooed on me, because it's the most profound shit I've ever heard
Very true, I think it has a lot to do with they crazy odd time signatures they use, and I think it throws some peoples brains off that don't grasp the shear complexity of their music and lyrics..
@kennethdennis40I listen to this song every time I need to do sth that makes me uncomfortable like talking in front of a lot of people, asking someone out or an important exam / work thing because it helps me detach myself from the moment and be grateful for all I have

Tool fans know how good this song is but, underrated to the general public. I see what you're saying about the aggressive part being war or fighting. Right before that part hits, Maynard in the background is saying.... Fight till they die over sun, over sky They fight till they die over sea, over air They fight till they die over blood, over love They fight till they die over words, polarizing
"Let it marinate" is a great phrase, as it relates to their music as a whole. Just like a marinade, their music gets better the longer you keep soaking in it. There are very, very few songs that keep getting better the more you hear them, but almost every Tool song is like that for me. Keep spiraling out 🤘
One reactor (can't remember which one) pointed out that the breakdown in the middle is like time travel...starts rhythmic and tribal (beginning of man) and evolves into almost frantic chaos (current state of humanity)
"Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to Heaven, conscious of its fleeting time here" CUT AND DIVIDE IT ALL RIGHT IN TWO
Oh shit this the one I've been waiting for. You've dipped your toes far enough into the water to appreciate it's brilliance. It's good that this wasn't your first song.
One of my favorite memories was being on 3 tabs at a pirate festival, and walking into a roadside tavern playing Fear Inoculum the weekend it released... they had LED chandeliers that synced to the music, so I sat down in the center of the bar and spiraled out to Pneuma.... mindblowing experience
This song has always fascinated me. Something I don’t think gets enough attention is that the structure of the song is a story in itself. One way to interpret the song, in my opinion, is human evolution and the passing of time. The song starts out very simple (by Tool standards) which could represent how we started out as simple creatures - talking monkeys. As time has gone on, humans have become more complicated and “divided”. The song matches that and slowly progresses to become faster, louder, and more complex. Ultimately ending in a big finale that brings us right back to the start..
😂 you, said it felt very aggressive. 😂 that is humorous. It's someone saying a bomb felt very destructive.😂. I love TOOL. I saw them 3 times LA, Tampa Orlando.
I’ve been a Tool fan for 22 years, and reacted to a-lot of channel’s Tool reactions. I can see that you’re a true musician who appreciates greatness. Thank you!
That is what makes TOOL so special in my mind is that they get so DEEP and complex in so many ways both musically and lyrically and Mathematically ! They play in crazy timing signatures, which I think is what throws off a lot of people, but there are those that know what all goes into their music and grasp it, and that is why TOOL has a fierce and loyal following, but it is not for those that cant grasp it all I feel.. TOOL has never been a commercial band and only put out an album once every 10-13 years, They never cared about radio play, hence almost every one of their songs are 6 minutes and longer.. Songs written to be played on the radio are meant to be around 3-4 minutes long.. Seriously, look at all the hit songs on the radio over the years and look at the length of most of them.. TOOL got it's fans from word of mouth and concert's, but guess what band is the only band in history to have the billboard top 10 in online downloads that every spot on the Billboard top 10 was a TOOL song during the release of their last album in 2017 I believe it was.. Yes you heard me right the only band in history to have their songs take up every spot 1-10 in the billboard top 10 of most downloaded songs at the same time, and as you might know most people just pay to download songs these days rather than buy CD's.. What makes it even crazier, is like I said, most of their songs were never played on the radio over the last 30 years they have been playing.. Think about it, there is literally probably only about 5 TOOL songs that got radio play over the last 30 years yet they were able to fill every spot on the Billboard Top 10 AND THE ONLY BAND in history to do it!
You need to catch them live. They're about to start their fall tour, but I would bet that they'll tour again next year. I have been going to shows for 30 years and they are one of the best!
I've been watching reactions to this song for years, just WAITING for someone who gets it like you do. Thank you for combining the lyrical content with the instrumental genius that Tool is.
Interesting how we are able to transcend this life experience, bear witness, introspect and then create such lyrics. It was a pleasure watching your reaction. So honestly delivered. 😃
This is my favorite Tool song hands down, so beautifully composed from every angle. I loved this reaction and felt you were pretty intuitive in your interpretation of the material. Would love to see your reaction to Hooker With a Penis next.
I interpret this song as evolving beyond violence. As a choice between violence and peace and choosing peace. Choosing to offer the enemy the other cheek after he's slapped you.
We're the angels on the sidelines. This song is about the illusion of Duality. There aren't any "others"... that's the illusion that's kept us tearing each other apart since Adam realized he was naked (ability to metacognize)... that was an allegory for the fall of man (descent into Duality). Adam was naked...but he didn't know he was naked until he took a bite...so to speak. And you are absolutely right about the language. Our Dualistic language has kept us in bondage. I'll give an example. "The wind blows". This simple coherent statement in the English language seems harmless, but our language holds domain over how we perceive rrality, and language consistently reinforces this to us relentlessly. . Now, is there a blower of the wind, and wind that obeys some sort of commander of the wind? Obviously not, there's only 1 thing happening here, there is ONLY the wind.. however, when you have a language that adheres to a military chain of command (King/servant or God/inferior) we act accordingly... and we feel we're right in two.. ..right in our Dualistic way of seeing the world.
So I’ve only watched two of your videos, both were Tool, but bro. I absolutely love how you focus on the drums because I feel like Tool’s usage of percussion is often overlooked because of Maynard’s voice and the guitar effects. Tool has always been an 11 out of 10 band for me. Vocals, instrumentals, lyrics, album artwork (shoutout to Alex Grey), everything. I’m so happy to see someone else appreciating their work. You definitely caught this sub bro.
17:50 - That was my interpretation, that the heavy / solo section is a sort of extended onomatopoeia for warfare. There's also the excitement in that section where I start vibing to it and then I blush when it hits me 'Oh yeah, I've got that in me too'. Master class.
😁Love your reactions to tool, you get it from the rip. To me that whole middle section of the song is the evolution of man from tribal to modern chaos to the end of the world.
I feel that "chaotic" section is allegory to all history od humans. I mean going thru centuries, different eras, one after another. Like developing humankind constantly interrupted by violence.
Love your interpretations of the lyrics! This is such a powerful song in terms of the visuals it creates in your head and reflecting on our place in time and a higher power then us. I totally see a similar visual during the last 2 mins of the song....humans tearing each other apart for what...while the angels and God look on in horror, and turn their backs. Subscribed!!!
WELCOME TO THE RABBIT HOLE DUDE! I was around when tool first formed and came out with their first album. We were all completely God's smacked and didn't know what the heck we had just heard.... BUT WE LOVED IT! I love that you discover them!
My man, I’m 50 and I’m still at heart a blue colored street kid from Pittsburgh. Your reaction to this band is my favorite so far. You caught that vibe like I did when I was young. Just like I caught vibes from Tribe or 2pac back then :) Stay safe out there, brother! 🇺🇸❤️
I just came across your channel and I like they way you break these songs down. I can see how they affect you because they’ve affected me the same way. You got another subscriber sir. Thank you.
and to think that the music is finished when the lyrics are written. its like Justin, Adam & Danny's music tells a story, setting the emotional tone, and then Maynard's amazing lyrics match the emotions of the music and force you to Think Deep.
To me this song resonates everything, that we as humans, have failed at. War begin as soon as we could figure out how to make weapons. It’s a beautiful composition and my favorite by this band. The angels want to know why we chose this path, they can’t even understand the pain and death that we have chose
Sweet, this is currently my favorite Tool song. Try not to listen to new ones cause they always get me. Ticks and Leaches is pretty awesome on that note. The drum solo toward the last 3rd of this is my all time favorite. This band can literally put me in a trance. Look at the cover art for these tunes, then read the Biblical descriptions of angels. This is from Genisis. Cain and Abel. Greed and envy will ensure they must cut it all right in two. The tribal drumming could signify Africa, the cradle of mankind.
I think you were spot on when you said the "chaotic" part felt angry, like a battle. The way I interpret this song is angels on the sidelines watching a human war/battle as they talk to each other (with a sense of disgust, indignation, and pity).
I see the drum build as starting as a communal and tribunal circle of a tribe and then as division develop moving to war drums and chaos ending in violence and then sudden silence and mourning for the loss of the creators intent for a peaceful race of happy humans that have been reduced to a warring band of unreasoning animals hence the monkey reference.
Would just like to offer the word "ruminate" in place of marinate. Ruminate implies deep thought on a subject, and thats definitely what this song and the majority of Tool lyrics make you do.
"I like the way my ears feel".
YES! That's TOOL. Thanks for your videos!

Maynard wrote this from the perspective of the angels. So creative.
"That chorus is like lotion in my ears"...................thats classic!
That's like a sore dick...... Can't beat it!!!!!
with all respect , the fact that you said he uses his voice as an instrument got an instant sub!

This has been my favorite song by TOOL since the first time I heard it when the album was released.

Maynards voice is like diving from a precipice into the abyss.
"Cut it right in two" remember the story of King Soloman and the baby with two mothers one a liar one who was true.
He narrates the emotion of the music.
Tool is that band, that you wish you could just feel the music wash over you. Experience it down to your molecular level and not just with your ears.
