The beautiful thing about Tool's lyrics is that Maynard writes them into the song after Adam, Danny and Justin compose the music. Its simply amazing how he can write the lyrics to fit the music perfectly.
One reactor (can't remember which one) pointed out that the breakdown in the middle is like time travel...starts rhythmic and tribal (beginning of man) and evolves into almost frantic chaos (current state of humanity)
That's really insightful. I'd never thought of it that way before. Thank you for sharing.
Maynard wrote this from the perspective of the angels. So creative.
"That chorus is like lotion in my ears"...................thats classic!
That's like a sore dick...... Can't beat it!!!!!
Oh shit this the one I've been waiting for. You've dipped your toes far enough into the water to appreciate it's brilliance. It's good that this wasn't your first song.
Tool fans know how good this song is but, underrated to the general public. I see what you're saying about the aggressive part being war or fighting. Right before that part hits, Maynard in the background is saying....
Fight till they die over sun, over sky
They fight till they die over sea, over air
They fight till they die over blood, over love
They fight till they die over words, polarizing
I'm crying on the way to work, thanks bro. This is only my favorite song ever, I'm so thankful that you enjoyed it as well.
Maynard absolutely uses his voice as an instrument. He stands in the back of the stage by the drums.
This has been my favorite song by TOOL since the first time I heard it when the album was released.
You have a favorite Tool song? I'm not being an a$$, I just rarely hear anyone say that!
you have great musical tastes
@@Kathie4 Up until that point, I wouldn’t have been able to pick one either.
Try Lateralus... Written to the Fibonacci Sequence. It is nice to the brain.
This, and Stinkfist.
This is a song that points out all of humans flaws
I’ve been a Tool fan for 22 years, and reacted to a-lot of channel’s Tool reactions. I can see that you’re a true musician who appreciates greatness. Thank you!
My brother I can't tell you how happy I am for you to have totally received the message of this song. You get it...peace be with you sir!
You need to catch them live. They're about to start their fall tour, but I would bet that they'll tour again next year. I have been going to shows for 30 years and they are one of the best!
Interesting how we are able to transcend this life experience, bear witness, introspect and then create such lyrics. It was a pleasure watching your reaction. So honestly delivered. 😃
Liked the reaction. Nice on recognizing the amazing drums!
This is my favorite Tool song hands down, so beautifully composed from every angle. I loved this reaction and felt you were pretty intuitive in your interpretation of the material. Would love to see your reaction to Hooker With a Penis next.
His voice is an instrument and their instruments have voices.
used to be my favourite song by tool, but dude these guys will take you on a journey every time.
Top ten favorite songs of all time!!!! That's f#$kn crazy!!!!
That instrumental part sounds like WAR to me
Love the channel brother, always warms the heart to see someone discover TOOL.
The 10,000 Days album has a connection to the lead singer of TOOL mother who suffered a stroke, she lived for 10,000 days
I love this fabulous Tool song (my favorite one of al) and your reaction to it. 😎
and to think that the music is finished when the lyrics are written. its like Justin, Adam & Danny's music tells a story, setting the emotional tone, and then Maynard's amazing lyrics match the emotions of the music and force you to Think Deep.
To me this song resonates everything, that we as humans, have failed at. War begin as soon as we could figure out how to make weapons. It’s a beautiful composition and my favorite by this band. The angels want to know why we chose this path, they can’t even understand the pain and death that we have chose
Yeah, I have always thought of his great voice as another instrument also. DC = GOAT
We have survived millions of years as beings of chemicals, hormones, proteins and electricity acting on impulse.. and the way we have survived has been by the thinnest thread of humanity. Caring for one’s neighbor and building strong communities. We will need to return to that soon if we want to keep surviving! 😅
So I’ve only watched two of your videos, both were Tool, but bro. I absolutely love how you focus on the drums because I feel like Tool’s usage of percussion is often overlooked because of Maynard’s voice and the guitar effects. Tool has always been an 11 out of 10 band for me. Vocals, instrumentals, lyrics, album artwork (shoutout to Alex Grey), everything. I’m so happy to see someone else appreciating their work. You definitely caught this sub bro.
I heard this song the day it was released. Seen it performed live. I can't believe this album is ~17 years old now. Where has all the time gone...
We (humans) are silly monkeys in the eyes of angels…we are constantly dividing things, right in two
He’s referring to Earth being the Garden of Eden. Earth is plentiful and has everything we need. A true paradise which we take for granted and destroy.
My parents generation had bands like Phish and The Grateful Dead. My generation got Tool. We win.
This is hilarious
There's a video you need to watch of this. Deep dive to find the perfect animated one. You won't be disappointed. Not the official... but the best
I can't wait for your Wings for Marie reaction vid. Keep up the great work!
It's a wonderful thing to see you awaken to the coolness of TOOL! You get them! That's cool man. Way cool.
This song is CRAZY.
It's about how God (if there is one) gave us freewill and the Angels in heaven are asking him why, telling him how much bad we've done to each other because of it.
Looking down, then looking to God and asking him when/if he wants them to do something about it.
He gives us thumbs, we use them to forge blades and clubs to kill each other when there's no need to because there's enough on this planet to feed us all. There's no reason to, but we still do it because we strayed from God's word.
Even if you're not religious, the lines:
"How they've survived so misguided is a mystery"
"Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here" which references our willingness to refuse the notion that God exists, even though he's tried to tell us how to be good to one another and show us the way into heaven and even if you don't believe in the word of God you've still strayed and aren't a good person.
It reminds me of a guy I work with that HATES religion because "they kill in the name of their God"
He shut right up when I asked him what excuse people that don't believe in religion or a God have when they kill, which is rising in numbers as people have become less religious in America.
At the end of the day, we all have freewill, regardless of whether or not you are religious. We make the decisions for ourselves.
"repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven conscious of it's fleeting time here" 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Everybody knows the beautiful cover of this song by Beard of Harmony ft. Yann Phayphet, available here on TH-cam, yes? Good.
Give all glory to God.
This is my favorite song of all time. Any time someone enjoys it I get personal satisfaction. The message is painful but true. Maybe one day humanity can evolve past our primal instinct.
Maynard is telling a 'story', you have to hear more than a few sentences from it to understand what he's saying. Make sense?? You're trying to dissect and understand little parts as if they stand on their own but that's only a small part of the 'story' he's telling. Ready for the next Tool masterpiece!
Great song! Sad lyrics tho. TOOL fan since 87. Enjoy your reactions Mugs Thanks! "Angels on the Sidelines...Again"
Yess!!!
The Angels can't believe how stupid we are. We can't believe how stupid we are.
The cover art rocks. It is worth buying the CD. So cool.
Eden: as if, the world as a whole. No one would be hungry if we had no greed.
15:53 That's right!
Enjoy thys
I’ve seen it said dozens (if not hundreds) of times in comment sections, and it was stated in this video too: “He uses his voice like an instrument!”. Isn’t that just.. singing?
Not usually. Typically the voice is used as the primary and the instruments are used secondarily, to compliment the voice. Here we are listening to the voice being integrated into the sing like an instrument, just another part of the composition.
One of the most widespread interpretations says that this song is about Lucifer's rebellion. Only the angels who then rebelled could have questioned the Father's decisions. In fact, then we talk about a war that could be the one between men, but it is probably the endless one between the angels faithful to God and those who do not understand and do not approve that an inferior creature like man can have the love of the creator without deserving it.
Next. tool culling voices
Monkey killing monkey.
Human Killing human.
Throw in 7 specific sins.
And it all goes to sh¡t
Have you done Pushit yet? If not… GO!
The tug of war between man; or humanity better yet. The bitter “sweet” victory at the cost of salty unfortunate death; of one another, of the same kind. And over what?……
During a game if commentators are on the sideline talking abt what's happening who's talking? So who's conversing the lyrics in this song🤔
God listening to the angels gossiping about humans ?? I had never thought about it before right now 🤔
The song is about how Angels hate the fact that God loves humans more than them, when humans are so destructive against eachother
I'm pretty sure Danny is an octopus.
I interpret that chaotic portion of the song, as this is a song about the earths time, and that chaotic sequence is humans existence and war and suffering.
Welcome to Maynard James Keenan.
check out the user created video for right in two. It is perfect for the song and what you are talking about.
Not trying to sound racist. BUT! Any black guy reacting/listening to Tool!? Fuck yea! Respect!!
Seems like...The song is about one of Gods Angels/Disciples observing Gods creation and questioning why?
Yes another tool vid!!!!
Ticks and Leeches
Its god talking
i typically think that when he's talking about angels in this context he's talking about benevolent human beings sitting around watching the world go to shit. I consider myself one of those i guess. I hold the ability to reason and do love and care for humanity but i forsake god when i betray that better nature.
This only music
His voice IS an instrument - I love your thoughtful reactions.
Hand on Heart it’s like rediscovering Tool once again 🎉🎉🎉🎉
with all respect , the fact that you said he uses his voice as an instrument got an instant sub!
Same!!
"Let it marinate" is a great phrase, as it relates to their music as a whole. Just like a marinade, their music gets better the longer you keep soaking in it. There are very, very few songs that keep getting better the more you hear them, but almost every Tool song is like that for me. Keep spiraling out 🤘
Tool is that band, that you wish you could just feel the music wash over you. Experience it down to your molecular level and not just with your ears.
Mushrooms
What do you mean, "wish you could just feel the music wash over you"? It does for me regardless of what I want.
You can! 🍄
Tool is the greatest band EVER! And I have lots of other bands i love. Maynard's a genius.
One of my favorite memories was being on 3 tabs at a pirate festival, and walking into a roadside tavern playing Fear Inoculum the weekend it released... they had LED chandeliers that synced to the music, so I sat down in the center of the bar and spiraled out to Pneuma.... mindblowing experience
This song is an obsession. I put it in with Lateralus, Pneuma and Invincible.
Do the same to get ready for the gym.
@@kennethdennis40I listen to this song every time I need to do sth that makes me uncomfortable like talking in front of a lot of people, asking someone out or an important exam / work thing because it helps me detach myself from the moment and be grateful for all I have
"Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift his eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here"
I've got this line tattooed on me, because it's the most profound shit I've ever heard
It really is
I have been needing to get the same tattoo the most profound lyric that I have heard.
@@anandamide8991 I've decided to go with "If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay".
where tf u got that tat that'd be long af
@@adoze6272Haha... exactly...
"Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to Heaven, conscious of its fleeting time here"
CUT AND DIVIDE IT ALL RIGHT IN TWO
repugnant is a creature who would re-post the same lyric quote under every reaction video
No other band quite like Tool that can put emotions into music the way they do
Scientist perspective. We are here for the same reason that squirrels are here. Just happened. Evolution. Animals are animals, and we are no exception, thus the greedy and violent nature in ourselves that we often display. This doesn't mean that the world is basic and nasty though. Seems to me the world is beautiful and awe inspiring. People are amazing and loving and kind. What you see depends on your perspective.
Very true. Cheers from Portugal.
Some people aren’t ready for Tool. It’s clear that you’ve figured out how they’re special.
Very true, I think it has a lot to do with they crazy odd time signatures they use, and I think it throws some peoples brains off that don't grasp the shear complexity of their music and lyrics..
Mug has become a squad leader in the Tool army
Of all the Tool reactions, his are definitely my favorite
"I like the way my ears feel".
YES! That's TOOL. Thanks for your videos!
can't stop crying while listening to this album.. i don't know words to describe how beautiful this is
Stop crying..
@@nathanwaibel454start crying..

Any lyrical content from and not just Maynard...all the members of all his groups..Serving just one more plate of delicious reality . to those aware that there is a reality being disguised by the hateful selfish cowards... that inherited control over our education and in fact all the basic knowledge or disinformation required to keep humans at odds . For real... If you don't shed tears at some point to this band... You need to reevaluate your life.
That's tough dude. For me it's Lateralus when he says "keep going" I just break down and wail like a baby
This. Is. Why.
Lyrics deep, true, universal, and accessible.
Music riding the waves of evolution.
And Danny.
And danny! Absolutely
And never forget Justin, his bass is the lead in some of my favourite songs from TOOL ❤
@@alihijazi4451 Justin brings the thunder!
It's gotta be Wings for Marie time...
For sure!
Sh*t... that's a tough one, though 😢
It’s here
So nice to finally have a reactor that gets it. Love your streams, keep up the good work.
Maynard absolutely uses his voice as an instrument, it's basically the whole reason they intentionally keep him low in the mix so often!
As you get close to "No Quarter" listen to the Led Zep original first. The Tool version is the perfect homage.
I second that.
Third
This song has always fascinated me. Something I don’t think gets enough attention is that the structure of the song is a story in itself. One way to interpret the song, in my opinion, is human evolution and the passing of time.
The song starts out very simple (by Tool standards) which could represent how we started out as simple creatures - talking monkeys. As time has gone on, humans have become more complicated and “divided”. The song matches that and slowly progresses to become faster, louder, and more complex. Ultimately ending in a big finale that brings us right back to the start..
Maynards voice is like diving from a precipice into the abyss.
The song is from the view of the Angels in Heaven.
They are questioning the "Creator's" motives for why he gave his "greatest" creation such free will to disobey.
These talking monkeys are blessed by God with all the cognition and reasoning, yet they choose to divide everything amongst themselves and fight each other for it and over trivial things when Eden (the World/Paradise created FOR us) has everything we need. Yet we still fight each other and horde all the things for ourselves. Its the paradox of humanity.
He says he is NOT a lead, his vocals are but another instrument. Pure art and 🔥
Check out some of Maynard's side project stuff....

Sweet, this is currently my favorite Tool song. Try not to listen to new ones cause they always get me. Ticks and Leaches is pretty awesome on that note. The drum solo toward the last 3rd of this is my all time favorite. This band can literally put me in a trance. Look at the cover art for these tunes, then read the Biblical descriptions of angels. This is from Genisis. Cain and Abel. Greed and envy will ensure they must cut it all right in two. The tribal drumming could signify Africa, the cradle of mankind.
Humans are alive to remember the horrors of what we are capable of. If there wasn't more good than bad than we would not be alive to have these revelations.
I see the drum build as starting as a communal and tribunal circle of a tribe and then as division develop moving to war drums and chaos ending in violence and then sudden silence and mourning for the loss of the creators intent for a peaceful race of happy humans that have been reduced to a warring band of unreasoning animals hence the monkey reference.
He narrates the emotion of the music.
Excellent reaction. Your descriptions of each segment are great.
I interpret this song as evolving beyond violence. As a choice between violence and peace and choosing peace. Choosing to offer the enemy the other cheek after he's slapped you.
I feel like this song is the prequel to Descending
We're the angels on the sidelines.
This song is about the illusion of Duality. There aren't any "others"... that's the illusion that's kept us tearing each other apart since Adam realized he was naked (ability to metacognize)... that was an allegory for the fall of man (descent into Duality). Adam was naked...but he didn't know he was naked until he took a bite...so to speak.
And you are absolutely right about the language. Our Dualistic language has kept us in bondage.
I'll give an example. "The wind blows". This simple coherent statement in the English language seems harmless, but our language holds domain over how we perceive rrality, and language consistently reinforces this to us relentlessly. . Now, is there a blower of the wind, and wind that obeys some sort of commander of the wind? Obviously not, there's only 1 thing happening here, there is ONLY the wind.. however, when you have a language that adheres to a military chain of command (King/servant or God/inferior) we act accordingly... and we feel we're right in two.. ..right in our Dualistic way of seeing the world.
I always thought it was less about humans turning from god, so much as about humans turning on each other. Were not one. Give us thumbs we forge a blade, we make a club we divide the land, draw lines in the sand. Every gift we were supposedly given divides us from each other. Certainly from the perspective of an angel we are idiots dividing our gifts and power instead of sharing it and being united in its use. Were obsessed with dichotomies because a spectrum doesnt allow us to say that one aspect is better. But when we split things in two, its easier for us to elevate one and vilify the other.
👏 👏 👏
If you haven't reacted to PUSHIT yet, please put it on your list. I think you will love it!
😂 you, said it felt very aggressive. 😂 that is humorous. It's someone saying a bomb felt very destructive.😂. I love TOOL. I saw them 3 times LA, Tampa Orlando.
This is an anthem for collectivism, socialism. Unfortunately, if we americans are to uphold our high standard of living, capitalism, commercialism, waste is the only economic model that will sustain our prominence. Do you really want to give up your standard of living? Only you can judge your greed over altruism,my friends. Your conscience and the gods will ultimately decide.
