    I love how he mentioned that the look of an instrument can inspire you do do stuff musically you might not otherwise think of. This is totally true for me. If for example I was to borrow a Ric4003 bass or something I'll imagine I'm Geddy Lee and try to write something proggy. Only terrible, lol. Well you get the gist.

    • @scottlowell493

      It's true. Cool looking kits make you want to play them more than boring/worn out looking kits.

      everything you do for the first time will be terrible... thing to remember is... when you have done it terribly, next time you'll do it badly, a few more times and it will be decent and so on...
      If you never try... you will always be terrible at it, simply because you havent even started learning.
      Failing is just a part of the road to succes.

      Matt Bellamy says that’s why he plays custom Manson’s instead of Strats or Les Paul’s, because he doesn’t want to end up leaning into all the guitar hero’s who used them’s styles due to the association.

    Back in the '80's most of us metal drummers used the old blue hydraulic heads. They were great.

    • @scottlowell493
      @scottlowell493 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They mic'd up perfectly. I liked that they sounded better on 10" toms that most heads back in the day. 10" toms had a tendency to "boing" .

      +SweetwaterSound These heads will make a low quality drum set sound decent. But when you buy a high end kit they deaden their sound. Hydraulic heads prevent the livelyness and nuances provided by a quality kit ( Starclassic, Pearl Reference, Dw etc ). But if your playing on a starter kit thses heads will do well. Just my two cents.

    • @DarthCiliatus
      @DarthCiliatus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Paul Daluz So they are equilizers for drumsets. They make crappy drumset sound decent instead of like a bag of hamsters being sent down an in-sink garbage disposal but make an amazing drumset also mearly sound decent instead of amazing.

      I agree. I bought one of these for my snare drum a while ago. My snare drum is a yamaha oak custom, so that speaks for itself. However with the hydraulic head it sounded dead and crappy and I hated it. Up until that point I've never used hydraulic heads and I now I know I never will.
      I should say, though, that it's a very durable head and sounds decent in small clubs where sustain is usually an issue. I would recommend it to young drummers or teachers who have practice kits.

    • @larrytate1657
      @larrytate1657 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. I tried one on my tom once and it killed too much tone. Ec2s are the limit for me and even they can be too much depending on the drum imo.i usually use Remo emperors or G2s.

    I remember in 11th grade (93/94) I had clear, blue, red and black Hydros on my kit.
    Only for a bit though - too dead for me. I wa a huge fan of the ROCK Glass, which were like the G2 but punchier. Same weight, different grade of film...
    I still have a brand new set of ROCK, and Resonant Glass heads from the mid 90's. Waiting till my old singer returns from Sweden to get the old band's music recorder. Then, I will break them out. The old snare heads I have from those days are Genera, Genera HD, and Genera HD Dry. Memories come back just typing this!

    Ive been playin drums for nearly 12 years. I’ve used Evans EC2 heads on my kit for all the years I’ve been playin. I’ve just made the switch this past weekend to the Black Hydraulic heads...and for my style and needs, my kit has never sounded better!! They’re easy to tune indeed, but you still need to know the proper tone you want from the drum to really sound great.
    I love the controlled sound. Very warm, dark, short sustain, no extra overtones, great tonality, high durability, killer black look, and absolutely no extra dampening needed. I play at church every week on Sundays, and because of the acoustics in my church, the Black Hydraulic heads are beyond perfect. And also, for a louder environment, I’ll be using the Onyx heads for my kit. No dampening needed for those heads either. Dark, short sustain, great attack, slick look, and durable. Evans is the ONLY brand I use or will ever use for my kit for life. Best heads I’ve ever owned. I’ve grown tired of using dampening rings on my toms, and having far too much ring without the rings. My floor tom has never sounded better. I can actually hear a tone now rather than a wonky thump sound.

      Thank you, and do you know the difference in sound among all Hydraulic colours?

    • @vananon51
      @vananon51 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cristianch1 I prefer the black hydraulic heads for snare and toms. The blue are too bright for me, and the red make me angry (don’t even give any consideration to the clear ones). I also can’t stand seeing the actual oil in between the layers on those. The black heads are designed differently: you wouldn’t see the the oil sandwiched within the layers; you would only see the solid black drumhead. The black hydraulic snare head is also different: it has a black frost matte finish. I love it. I added just 1 extra moongel to make the sound even dryer as I use the snare equipped with that head for Church. I’ll likely endorse Evans drumheads for life.

    • @cristianch1
      @cristianch1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vananon51 Excellent, so definitely I’m going to buy the black ones. The last question, for resonant patch, any special recommendation

    • @vananon51
      @vananon51 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cristianch1 None needed with the hydraulic heads as there’s enough oil in between the layers to dampen the overtones without additional moongels. In my opinion, more dampening will completely deaden the tones of the drums while using those heads. I also like the frosted black onyx heads for the rack toms; I use a floating overtone ring that just sits on the head, or if you like a more open sound and tone you don’t need dampening, or instead of the floating rings you could use a moongel or 2 (think the floating rings are made by Remo). I like those heads too because they have amazing tone, and I love the frosted matte finish as they won’t reflect light into your eyes while playing if there is lighting around you. Experiment with both the hydraulic heads and the onyx heads to hear which you prefer.

    In the late 70s, Zickos acrylics came standard with your choice of hydraulics (clear, red or blue - batter and reso). Clear and red had the same sound - somewhat resonant. The blues were so dead, they only worked if you miked each drum. I was the only one I knew that had the reds, every other Zicko player in Minnesota had the blues and one had clears. W/o mikes, the toms with blue heads were click, click, click. Not even a thud. The Reds (and clears) could cut through a band much better. Keep in mind, virtually no local bands miked their toms back then. I never damped my kick or toms and they sounded great. In my opinion, the hydraulics (any color) were way to dead for wood drums, but they really help tame the acrylics. All this said, I don't know if the new hydraulics are the same as those from the 70s.

    The colors could definitely have different sound. Probably not much, but different pigments have different chemical makeups, weights, etc. I’ve got some oil paints and all of them take about 2 days to dry but the black and the dark blue take closer to 4 days so different colors have different properties. So mixing the pigment with plastic in the head could make it sound just a little different just from the way they mix

    I must be weird....but I don't think these sound dead at all. In fact on my 16 and 18 floor tom I use wide overtone rings in addition to the hydraulics (G1 clear on the reso). Either tom will ring for 5-6 seconds after being hit.......smooth, warm, clear tone. A little less projection/volume.....perhaps. The only thing bothers me is the air bubbles. Seems like there should be a way to figure that one out.

    Thanks for the review. Would i need to change out the resonant heads as well? I recently purchased DW Performance 7 piece white Ice from you guys at Sweetwater. Tell Ian I said hello. Great customer service. I read all of the comments here. Very helpful. Wish i could play as good as you. Soon i hope....lol

      Don't put these on the reso side whatever you do. Get a thin 1 ply head for that. G1s or ambassadors. Having these on batter and reso will leave you with the tone of a piece of cardboard most likely. Haha. Not sure of that's what you were asking but just in case.

      "I have an old set of Hydraulic" - heads should never get to the point of being "old" just like guitar strings. Change them before they get that way.

      Honestly, these are the only heads I can count on for 6+ months of playing as hard as I hit. They do sound great on my high end kit, certainly not as open as I'd like, but they are exactly what Nick said, warm, focused and fat.

      Larry Dicus I have heavy cymbals, use the hybrid snare batter head, and use Thomas Lang sig. sticks. Honestly, if I were to go any other route, I'd be changing out heads every other week.
