    I'm surprised; I actually enjoyed Jade Empire more the second playthrough. The first time I didnt even register the comments on my flawed technique for example. The second time I really appreciated all the little foreshadowing, also on master Li. The Li twist is of course similar to Revan's, but with the addition of the flawed technique and the Dirge storyline, I think it the story of Jade Empire is the most intricately crafted of all Bioware games.

      @OlStinky1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agree and interestingly the "heel" at the begining, Gao the Lesser, is correct about everything which is great perspective to pick up on your second playthrough - as earlier you were likely blinded by your anger at him.

      nahh, it's perfect length, would you rather be glad it's over or wish for more?? the fact you want more means it was good....
      so many games i just wish were done like 40 hours before they end.....such is the level of padding.....

    I think they should've just made the distinction between closed fist and open palm clearer, and made sure that EVERYONE understands that the closed fist is not evil, and your goal as far as good and evil goes is irrelevant to the philosophies. Closed fist is about straightforward solutions through strength while open palm is more about flexible solutions through control. Think of Closed Fist as Kickboxing while Open Palm is Judo. That's how they should've approached it and REMEMBERED the premise that it is *not* about Good/Evil. I remember that the way they handled open palm and closed fist bothered me a *lot*, especially towards the end of the game.

    Yes, Master Li is "open palm evil" that's exactly what I was getting at

  • @masterdisciple6542
    @masterdisciple6542 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    You're right about the in-game presentation of the open palm and closed fist. Especially since at the begining of the game one if the trainers defines what actual evil in the setting is supposed to be, an evil man does not care. Unfortunately that's what a lot of closed fist choices end up being.

    Jade Empire is one of the best games ever made imo. A very concise experience with great characters and the best twist I have ever experienced in a game. Limited repeatability in a sense, but I like to try out a new set of combat styles each few years and try out different romance options. A remake / remaster would be awesome

  • @OlStinky1
    @OlStinky1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Interesting, I replayed Jade Empire last winter and found it still held immense charm even though I knew the twist. You can tell it got less 'investment' from Bioware in its smaller size (in an interview they said this was because it was an unestablished franchise), but the smaller contained narrative fits the story.
    I suspect this is why there won't ever be a sequel though, also the subject is a bit more niche than Mass Effect and Dragon Age, which is a shame because there is a lot of great world building to raise our interest such as Phoenix Gate the massive trade city or the "Not-Mongol" horselords of the north.
    Also no love for Henpecked Hou?

    Great rumination. I really wanted a Jade Empire 2, unfortunately Bioware does not exist any more so.... I'm sold on the lorerun, please put it up for funding on the website. I know you have a lot to go through, but there's always next year.
    I don't feel like the story was "worse" the second time around, I played it like 6 times already and I still enjoyed it the same.
    Did you have a chance to try Jade Master mode (new game+)?

  • @B.von.Bentzen
    @B.von.Bentzen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Master Li is extremely open palm. As in, he's open palm taken to the extreme. He will do anything in order to achieve harmony and order as him at the helm of the new order. He doesn't value survival of the fittest. Strength of others and himself. These things are the core of closed fist. He ultimately values more highly peace. Because his final plan, as seen in the Rule with Li ending, he wasn't lying when said in the last confrontation that his goal was peace and order.

    • @B.von.Bentzen
      @B.von.Bentzen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He's a peace over survival of the fittest and I think at this point that puts him on the way of the open palm. Definitely

    One thing that was really interesting about this game I noticed as a chinese martial arts practitioner; the moves are all authentic to traditional chinese martial arts however the names of the styles mixed with magic powers are changed; storm dragon for example has some hung gar moves (which is tiger-crane stuff). To me the combat engine is fine, you must be willing to change styles in seconds to chain moves. The only downside is that it is almost a little TOO fantastical. I wish Big Trouble in Little China could be remade into a game like this. :D

    • @resurrectedstarships

      I also agree 2nd playthrough is nothing like first playthrough because of all the mysteries and the plot twists. It was hard to stop playing the first playthrough.

    When open fist and closed fist were done well it was great. When they did it badly it was mustache twirling evil and insistant good.

    I remember playing this when I was really young, and eventually watched a live stream of it.
    I liked it, more for it's Setting and Characters than Gameplay as well.
    I tried playing this the other day on my PC, and I had a cloth physics bug(?) that made this game unplayable. Sad times.
    Pointing out 'flaws' was obnoxious.
    The "Philosophy" system was a let down for sure.
    On a side note, I really like the idea of Chinese Fantasy or Historical Fantasy RPGs. The entire Wuxia/Xianxia genre is so fascinating and has some incredible writers, and the fact that we don't have more games like Jade Empire (more so games that are better, or on par) available feels like a untouched treasure trove.

    Lore, I have an honest question, I wouldn't mind if you could answer on Loreweek or here because I am never able to hop on your streams while you're streaming -- about copyright/wrong and all that. I would email you if I knew how. :) What are your thoughts on using video game music and backgrounds (like from Witcher 3) in your ruminations and streams? I'm just curious because you are very intelligent and your thoughts on Nintendo copywrong for example are interesting (such as during your Odyssey stream when you were afraid of them copywronging you over the Jump Up song in New Donk City). Have you ever had a complaint from a company over using, say, Nobuo Uematsu's music in the background of your streams, for example? This is just something I've thought about for a while and want to hear your thoughts on.
    Also, I never got to play this game, so it's nice to hear your thoughts on it. Well done. :)

    Neverwinter nights, when it came out, was criticised for a diablo style gameplay. Rooms full of enemies and not a lot of dialogues. Also change of perspective (from baldur's gate isometric view) didn't help.
    Jade Empires would benefit greatly from this diablo style of gameplay, I loved the combat in this game and wished there were more enemies and longer game so I could battle more. Plus of course more techniques to learn.
    I like this game a lot, for its combat, characters, dialogues, plots and twists. This game is still good after all this time and I also wish there was a remake or maybe even second part. Sadly they did abandon this IP, put it on ice and left to rot. Now that Bioware is pretty much in a dumpster and EA started the fire, probably it will be sold with ME and DA IP pretty soon (after the failure of Anthem).
    The thing that I didn't like was the way of open palm and clenched fist. I like being evil in games but I also like being lawful (Lawful Evil FTW), knowing that evil is chaotic in this game made me end this game (three times) being good person, always choosing paralyzing palm and stone magic, helping Wild Flower (after the game my head canon is that she became a daugther of our hero and romance option) and generally avoiding being chaotic because I lose points and stone magic becomes less powerful. Of course deathhand gets released everytime. I like being evil but more in a way of evil tyrant rather than evil pirate. That's why in Stronghold I build all those torture devices :P
    Plus the final choice, that made me think that giving player too much choice hurts the game and the narrative. I played open palm entire game and still get the choice that would make me pure chaotic? No thank you. Apart from that, I really like the plot and twists of this game. I played it 3 times already and will more in the future, next time again with silk fox romance.
    You mentioned dragon age origins, I don't like choices there because I feel that being "evil" is being lazy there. You get more benefits from being good while evil guy just is lazy and don't care for an army.
    Actor who gave voice to master Li (sadly died in 2017), Barry Dennen, I like him a lot for his work/voice. He gave voice in Arcanum as dwarf king in exile and New Vegas as Dean Domino.
    The game also has a lot of minor characters that have story and personalities, I probably love this game the most for all those side quest. PC perfoming in the play, taking down the woman who wants the revenge on captain of the guard, helping the man heal his daugther (by taking a mummy liver), giving bandit woman husband or helping two women escape slavery. Imperial city somehow had the best quests (still, thanks to lenght of this game, not that much side quests could be put in this game).
    I think Sun Hai while being evil and having this "I am the state" mentality, was just a pawn compared to Li, became dangerously ambitious thanks to influence of his brother. Sun Li maybe from the very start had a plan to betray his brother but made a fatal error in jugdment, getting Dragon Power made Sun Hai something else than he was before. Sagacious Zu described Gao the Greater as a small man angry at world because his wealth can't buy him everything (I can be mistaken, poor memory card), I think Sun Hai had the same problem.
    About eternal bureaucracy being well meaning antagonist, it's a bureaucracy. I think the bureaucracy would eventually get to fix things on earth, maybe ending Sun Li and restoring the balance, by either dropping a "nuke" and wiping the slate clean or choosing another champion. About the spirit problem, I think they are blinded by ambition, they think they would do it but in given time they have to accept the sad truth.
    This draught reminds me of an idea from Mass Effect, where reapers were just fighting the dark matter and saving the entire galaxy. That was going to be the plot twist. I would love to be Shepard, hear this and say "You just refuse to face the fact that all empires fall, we just must accept it just like our own mortality".
    -------------
    I wrote a lot and not about the topic xD
    And forgot to say that Kai Lan the Serpent is voiced by Kain from legacy of kain, also Han'Gerrel vas Neema :P
    -------------
    As for Jade Empire 2, maybe no continuation and just make the stuff of legend? At the far end territory of Jade Empire our hero is born and we have the adventure. We save the world (from emptiness, dragons, Henpecked Hou wife or ourself) and after the game ends the book is closed. We see the servany putting Princess Lian to sleep, she read her this story to fill her with the mythos and awe of Jade Empire. Pricess go to sleep and dreams of those heroes. That would be a weird ending and not so much player agency, but still better than crappy Andromeda or ME3 ending :P

    I disagree re: "was the Emperor an equally sociopathic figure as the Glorious Strategist?"
    Really, if all three brothers were horrible people (I have vague memories that the youngest was suggested to be right bastard too, and that was prior to being warped into Death's Hand), it diminishes the horror/betrayal of Master Li's true colors being revealed.

    The fact it's fast turn-based combat with the presentation of real-time definitely is clunky, far moreso than KotoR's version which wore its fast turn-based nature on its sleeve. I disagree completely that works that rely on a twist are inherently weaker the second time around. It depends how well you've camouflaged the foreshadowing and whether new secondary meanings can be gleaned from what the first time around seemed mundane.
