Excellent review as always. I also use a GPD WinMax 2 with Oculink eGPU as my primary desktop and work laptop for travel. Can't wait to replace it with the Duo. While I love the WinMax 2, I don't find myself using the built-in controls at all, and feel that I'll get much more value from having 2 displays and a full-size keyboard. Really look forward to seeing how it changes my productivity when traveling for work. Won't miss packing the extra monitor and keyboard that I normally travel with.
My only gripe is the 2nd screen should have been detachable to reduce bulk on the go. As is the gpd duo is a cool concept, but its impractical. The first thing I did with my last laptop was buy a pen display which actually doubles as many things. You can also buy cheaper portable displays otherwise or just buy a foldable dual display for any computer in any size if you really want something that matches the vertical stack format.
Excellent review all round. Your findings re the NPU match what I've found in the past month as an AI newbie. As for the port layout, that was a big contributing factor to why I didn't back this.
GPD flexes so hard on this product. Sadly, it's not really the form factor I'm looking for, but I guarantee I would buy a GPD 16" single screen Strix Halo version in a heartbeat.
Hey, will you change the thermal paste on your duo? If so, please make a video about that how much thermal improvements can be achieved. I don't the equipment during my long travel to do so.
@@ThePhawx Cary, I'm curious how much actual performance you believe you are leaving on the table with your 4090 running at PCIe 4.0 x4? I'm considering a 4090 at PCIe 3.0 x8, and I'd like an idea of what I'll be leaving on the table. Thanks!
i just received my duo and so far linux i don't think is going to be a great experience which is a big let down for me. The screen seems to be oriented upside down in its default orientation i'm basing this on the fact booting ventoy and memtest86 is displaying upside down. I'm also noticing that the trackpad does not work in memtest86 as well as the function buttons like display brightness and turning on and off the extra display. This seems to indicate that there is drivers needed to speak to whatever is controlling these functions vs just being purely hardware.
I can’t help but wonder if GPD might have missed the mark slightly with some design decisions. For instance, while the dual 13.3-inch OLEDs are impressive, the 60Hz refresh rate feels outdated for gaming at this price and performance level. Many modern devices are leaning toward higher refresh rates, especially for gaming laptops, like come on GPD. Then there’s the undervolting performance, something I would’ve hoped would provide more consistent results, but it seems unpredictable depending on the game and power level. It feels like GPD tried to pack too much into one device without fully ironing out how each feature would work together. Still, the concept is undeniably exciting. It might not be perfect for everyone, but for those who prioritize versatility and a “do it all” device, the GPD Duo could be just quirky enough to justify a second look.
How many more monitors can you sync up with this? Just one more (to have three total) or could you get away with a couple additional monitors including the two w/ the duo?
Did you test HDR10(+) and or Dolby Vision with let's say Kodi or any of the many streamers? I would love to know which HDR formats this device supports.

So excited, waiting to order mine right now. Please at some point give us a guide or video otherwise about eGPU, specifically with an AMD dGPU instead of an nvidia one!
It looks fantastic! The only factor preventing me from purchasing it right now is the GPU. For a workstation laptop, I was hoping for at least a GTX 4060. Is the GPD Duo's Radeon 890M comparable to that?
Extremely disappointed in the performance differences between 890m and 780m, such minuscule gain it's unreal.Maybe 890m at 35w and above? Was going to upgrade from my win 4 7840u but highly likely not.
Oculink isn't thunderbolt. And the reality is pushing for 4k120 ultra settings which stresses the GPU most is very much inline with a desktop. But I am forcing a very GPU-bound scenario
I am kinda disappointed with this review to be honest. All of your comparisons are at 720p. With super amoled displays you'll at least want to bump up the resolutions especially since we get more CUs on the gpu side of things here vs hawk point. You take the long road to explain the basics. Maybe also color code your graphs in less duplicate so that the VS comparisons overlap as a single chart so I dont have to eye ball query up and down, back and forth over every talking point for every tdp. Ok sorry if I am ranting off a bit. I understand a lot of effort went into this verbose review. Happy you got to upgrade the win max 2 with a nice bit of kit.
Was waiting for this full review. Didn't expect it to be this full... wow. respect.
Sir… You are a legend. Invaluable information here and your attention to detail is world class. Can’t wait to get mine!

i would LOVE a clamshell linux tablet to draw on. A matte screen would be nice to draw with and while outdoors doing photo/video work.
Professor Phawx makes complicated concepts easy to understand.
This is one crazy indepth video 😲, Love the thumbnail 😄
@@WickedGamerCollector good to see you hear... Can you get one and emulate the Nintendo DS on it.. lol
Thank you sir. I'm about halfway and going to get some sleep. This is massively useful. Appreciate the rigor you apply to statistics! Hat off.

Goes straight to my shelf. Thanks for review.
GPD is heating up...Love their creativity in their devices.

Same. Even a 14 inch normal single screen laptop. I just want occulink port.
@@Nimbus1612 same but tablet
Please do a short comparison between this and the asus zenbook duo. Thank you.
PLEASE!

Linux test?
Working on that now-ish. Would like to get that done much faster XD

Suggestion to use thicker lines and larger fonts on the axis labels. When mobile its basically hidden
So for 15w gaming and under 8840u is comparable to hx 370 ?
Great review ! Do you know how easy it will be to entirely remove the second screen ?
I'd love to see an update on long term use of this device. I'm interested in software support.
Regarding the brightness control you mentioned at the beginning, did you try something like Twinkle Tray? It works for my multimonitor setups.
Finally, you can now play DS games the correct way.
I rarely comment, but wow great review man! I can't give enough thumbs up!👍👍👍

Agreed, it certainly isn't for gamers. GDP describes it as, "13.3-inch Dual Screen Productivity Laptop for Engineers."
Hi Phawx!
Such an in depth review 😧 I wonder if parking all the P-cores and using just c cores would benefit at 10w

can the m.2 slot hold a double sided ssd?
Single sided only

The 890m is (very) roughly comparable to a 3050/3050 Ti. If you want the extra grunt add a eGPU using either the USB4 or Oculink ports
Will there be tests with AutoTDP on the HX370? Also 2P4e config is really interesting especially at 10W. May bode well for lighter games maybe?
Yes! Def more interesting for handheld use, but something to keep in mind when we start seeing Strix handhelds
@ThePhawx Can't wait, as always, great stuff!
You have a 4090 to run an eGPU with Oculink?
I'd buy a single screen version in a heartbeat. Its really the perfect laptop for me, but the duo screen features would go largely unused I think.
Which amd drivers were used?
respect for GPD
Got my GPD Duo and touchpad stopped working for no reason… code 10? Request for HiD descriptor failed. Awesome.
how is GPD reliability compared to the big-names?
Will this work as a KVM on the top screen?
man ive been waiting long time for hx370 in handheld...... wish it were sooner
Crazy Laptop 😂
I was hoping for a steam deck apu vs 7840u, 8840u, and hx370 and 365.😅
Will you be doing your hdr burn in test? 😂
Gaming results look quite inconsistent for the new chip.
Need solo screen version

Give the Ai cores time to learn your patterns with underclocked settings, maybe overtime we will see results.
After watching, I think I will stick with Max 2 by another year
Bibity boop
You plan to connect a 5090 to this using Oculink? What a waste of GPU resources. Probably you should stick to something like a 4070S or 4070 Ti
Oculink isn't thunderbolt. And the reality is pushing for 4k120 ultra settings which stresses the GPU most is very much inline with a desktop. But I am forcing a very GPU-bound scenario
I thought 4090 doesn’t exist for oculink.

The only reason to buy this is for Nintendo DS emulation.
