- A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1990 license-based maze-action game for the PC Engine, Batman.
The NES and Genesis games based on the 1989 Batman movie were smash successes that are still known and loved to this day, but they didn't come into the world alone. Sunsoft actually created three unique console games for the caped crusader's Hollywood reboot, but this Japan-only PC Engine release never managed to capture the hearts of the masses like its siblings did.
It follows the same plot beats as its Nintendo and Sega counterparts, but instead of drawing yet again from the platforming beat 'em up well, Sunsoft went in a completely different direction for this one. The PC Engine game is an eccentric but stylish mix of item collecting, top-down run-and-gun action, and Pac-Man maze inspired level designs.
As weird as it is to see Batman cleaning up graffiti and collecting things that he finds on the street, the game comes together well. The controls are tight, the difficulty ramps up at a good pace, the regular introduction of new stage gimmicks keeps things interesting, and the presentation is excellent. The level themes are appealing, the cutscene art is superb, and the music - packed full of slap bass and orchestra hits - is some of the best I've ever heard from the system.
The strange choice of genre might not be to your taste if you're looking for a hi-octane superhero experience, but if you're a fan of Sunsoft, early 80s arcade games, and killer chiptune music, Batman for the PC Engine has a lot to offer.

The PC Engine Batman game is beyond weird, but it's Sunsoft quality all the way through. (That soundtrack!)
Shame that Sunsoft fucked up by giving Revenge of the Joker to an US developer
"What are you?" 😹🤘🕹️
This was meant to be a puzzle game, since Batman had only one hit point, and you didn’t fight boss enemies.
@@theodorehsu5023 You fight the Joker at the end.
When they said "Batman cleans up crime," the devs took it literally.
Bruce Wayne clearly gives a hoot.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was supposed to be a completely different game, but Sunsoft decided to redo the graphics during development to make the most out of having the Batman license. They didn't half-ass it if that's the case since it really does look great, but it's hard to imagine this was the gameplay idea that was originally pitched in the design meetings.
Worth it solely for the PC Engine remix of the NES level one music
Color me impressed! Sunsoft actually made a fun puzzle game... with Batman of all IPs.
Music's good, too. Love this remix of Stage 1 from the NES game (3:01).
An useless fact: In the (japanese) Famicom version of Batman, Stage 2's music is swapped in with Stage 1's
Apparently in this continuity, Batman's parents were killed by a guy who litters.
Holy Fester's quest, batman!
Fester's Quest, but if it was actually *GOOD*
49:07 - “My balloons… those are my balloons. HE STOLE MY BALLOONS! WHY DIDN’T SOMEBODY TELL ME HE HAD ONE OF THOSE… THINGS?! Bob, gun!” - The Joker
Stage 4 has that PC-Engine rendition of the Stage 1 music from the NES Batman game
Damn, these PCM samples are incredible! I wish more PC Engine games used them
You sure this music wasn't made by Konami with those orchestra hits? :p
I think I have an idea of what the objective is for most of the game; in addition to the power-ups, you have to gather all of the tainted beauty and hygiene products that contain a component of Smylex.
Joker has hidden stashes of his Laughing Gas Formula X scattered around various gang bases around gotham. Batman has managed to track down the location of all the hide outs, all thats left is hit the streets and clean up gotham.
(For those who with no imagination that think you are picking up trash, I helped make a story for their simple minds)
Loved this game. Music was epic...cutscenes were unreal
Sunsoft really knew how to do a lot with a little
More like Janitor man! But a lovely little game.
It's a shame the music really doesn't sound like something from Batman at all, at least imo, but the rest of the game looks quite fun.
Same with the NES version which shares bgm tracks with this game.
I'd argue that the cutscene music at 1:03:30 sounds pretty close to Danny Elfman's score from the film.
@@yzzysgames6294 The music still really isn't doing it for me. But that cutscene is cool.
AU where Bruce Wayne trained under the League of Janitors
This is my favorite version, it might even be better than the NES game. Truly showed the capabilities of the TurboGrafx, and I love that music!
That’s crazy you posted gameplay of this game bro!! Which PC Engine emulator do you use bro or Core and do you have a reliable link for PC engine BIOS files? I got Retrarch arch 4 days
ago and I finally took time out of my day to figure out how to operate RA and Im SO happy I decided to try it out and can’t believe I procrastinated so long now that I know how awesome RA is..The reason I said it was crazy and a 😂coincidence that you posted this because I didn’t know this game existed for the PC engine until 2 days ago when I was browsing a PC engine rom list and noticed it..I’ve never seen anyone post it or play it on here and you posting a video 48 hrs later after I just discovered it is awesome!!
That is a fun coincidence The Mednafen cores are great. I think the PC Engine one is called Beetle? The bios files are pretty easy to find with Google.

"MU SIC BY N HARA"
The guy wielded some serious magic, with or without Kodaka. RIP, Nobuyuki.
Bonanza Bat
So a Pac-man clone but with objectives ... meh
Great game 🎮 👏 👌 👍 🙌 💪
Pacbat
That game looks like a piece of repetative crap. The NES version was WAY better.
