The Rolex Sky Dweller is Rolex’s most versatile watch. It’s a GMT with a true 24-hour second time zone. It’s an annual calendar with a sophisticated bi-directional setting system. It’s a COSC certified Swiss chronometer. It is 100-meters water resistant, brightly luminescent, and mounted on a full bracelet; this Rolex is a sports watch. All of that, and the Sky Dweller remains wearable for most wrists thanks to a reasonable 42mm case diameter.
Rolex launched the original Sky Dweller in 2012, and the initial variants were available exclusively in precious metal. It was capable, but it was also ruinously expensive. Fast forward to 2017, and Rolex made several requests by popular demand including a stainless steel case, a steel bracelet, GMT displays that matched dial colors, and dials with fully luminescent hour indices. For 2021, Rolex updated the Sky Dweller with a Jubilee bracelet option, and that is precisely what today’s example features.
Internally, the Rolex Sky-Dweller ranks among the most complicated Rolex watches ever built. Rolex caliber 9001 includes automatic winding and a 70-hour power reserve. A special system of bidirectional planetary gears makes the annual calendar both easy to set and difficult to damage by accident. Rolex certifies each movement as a Swiss chronometer, but it also tests the fully assembled watch to timing tolerances that demand less than two seconds gained or lost per 24 hours.
Additional features of the Rolex caliber 9001 include robust construction and a unique setting system. Durability is provided by a screw-down Twinlock crown and 100-meter water resistance. Refinements such as a winding rotor on ball bearings, a full balance bridge, and a free-sprung balance improve shock tolerance. Rolex employs a blue oxidized niobium-zirconium antimagnetic hairspring that goes by the trade name “Parachrom Blue.”
The flued gold bezel - the only precious metal case component on the steel Sky Dweller - is called, “Ring Command,” and it is part of the movement. Control of the time and calendar functions is achieved using a combination of the crown and the rotating bezel.

a couple of great watches in this one. From the DB28, to the ALS Lange 1 and Odysseus. My favorite is the JLC Ultra Thin Moonphase in blue though. Looks fantastic on your wrist, Tim

It's so funny when you say it like people would use the Deepsea for diving.

3:11 Interesting that you rattle off the model numbers of a few other Patek Philippes when comparing, but you don't state the model number of this one (5990).

That DB28... 😮! Tim, this should be your next watch if you can fit it in. I've never been smitten by a De Bethune until I saw that one!

I love the Overseas line, but I have an unreasonable and inexplicable hatred for dedicated straps. I know how silly that is, but thats the only reason I don't own one. Love the video though 👍🏻

Rolex doesn't deserve to be in the company of most of these watches. Frigging overhyped assembly line watches.
