As a farmer I am looking to consolidate this year and keep equipment a little longer, before replacing. I would think I would be looking to hire equipment more to cover the heavy work and take the pressure off an aging fleet 🤷♂️
I think that you are broadly correct in your thoughts. There has been poor performance and financial results for many arable farmers in at least the past year and possibly even longer and livestock farmers are having a better time financially currently than has been the case for a number of years but food, bedding, vet and med, fertilizer etc costs have shot up dramatically. The other "sneaky" cost jump is for things like, power, water and insurance - hence the interest for solar / wind power and capturing rainfall. The key issue for all farmers is the increasing age of owners, reducing numbers of skilled staff coming forward and being retained in the industry. For some of these reasons there will be an increasing demand for specialist ag contractors and also farms looking to hire big(ish) equipment often for short time periods. I do think that there will be increasing opportunity for farmers and their staff to join up to tackle "team" jobs eg lime supply & spreading, muck and slurry spreading, Silage and big bale haymaking making even down to some livestock tasks such as fencing, vet tasks such as dosing, weighing and handling, mobile dipping, hair clipping. Milking relief and holiday relief, sickness relief and so on.
In tricky weather everyone going to need this hire equipment all at same time,different than plant hire being non seasonal. Nothing like being independent. @@Dan.Whiteford

Your thoughts were that with the inheritance tax fiasco and the loss of some funding for farmers they might not commit to buying equipment and go for the hire option which could only be good for you. A few more trailers on fleet couldn't do any harm and you could then sell on some of the older trailers at a price that might be tempting. 🤔😉.

I could weep for the young people now, interest rates will spiral out of control, businesses will close and un-employment will rise. Not just these clowns in charge now the Sunak didn’t have much idea either. How many politicians could tell the price of any essentials to life 🤷♂️.

I can see the farmers not purchasing / hiring very much this year until they know whats going on with the government.
I know that you all take great pride in how clean and tidy your fleet is prior to going out but should you be thinking about saving that big older John Deere tractor for "dirty" (smelly} jobs on farm especially tasks like work with slurry and manure? Could you be missing a trick not hiring / selling small tractors to Joe Public or even golf and other types of sports areas including local councils managing school sports areas and parks and large gardens?

Yes I still think that is the way. Me selling a few bits is just to replace with new
