    Good general overview. Soundcraft should have produced something like this. Their detailed videos on specific features are good, but your introduction is just what a beginner needs!

    Great tutorial, just one point I'd add. In addition to renaming the labels on the channel scribble strips, you can remap any of the input channels, submix masters, and effects buses to appear on any fader you choose in any of the four A-D fader banks. What that means is you don't always have to switch to layer C to adjust the submix masters, you can remap any of the submix masters to any fader and bank you prefer. In reality, the submix masters don't have to appear on layer C at all, Soundcraft just puts them there by default. The console actually allows you to put any channel or submix on any fader you like.

    I have enjoyed your style of delivery. Laid back and to the point. I don't need an energy drink driven child with skateboard music in the background trying to tell me what wonderful things I can do if I pushed that button. I'm 63 years old and have no fear of digital. I jumped in early with the Sony 32 track PCM and a Harrison desk. Having been raised on analog., I can say there is no need to wade through layers of menus to do a -1.35 dB trim on the third background singer's fourth chorus. Get the work done. This desk gets to the point, as our friend has so ably demonstrated.
    All senility aside. . . I'm shopping an additional desk. Sometimes a simple explanation does more than any slick sales pitch.
    Mr. Conklin, thank you for your easy analysis of a most capable tool.

      A high pass filter can have a cut off slope that typically ranges from 6db / octave to 48 db / octave. The Si Impact's HPF is set at 18 db / octave below the set frequency.

    I was very surprised to see you set the HPF at 200hz for a male voice. How wide is the rolloff curve?

    • @GrantConklin
      @GrantConklin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I recall it's 18db / octave. This would have surprised me a few years ago as well. On a bass vocalist you might high pass a little lower, but most tenors sound good high passed at 200, or even higher. It's one of those things that might defy the logic of the actual frequency output of a voice, vs what sounds good in a mix. It's not uncommon for me to high pass a soprano at 400 hz.

    I wish it was more about OPERATING the console and less about what is and how to use compression/EQ" gates...
    How to setup the input/output patch? How many physical inputs/outputs are there? How to setup a stage rack? You talk about mixes all the time but never show how to sends in them, you totally skipped the effects part...
    What is program mode? How do layer works? How do I navigate the menus? How and where do I setup an insert? Where are the overall settings and preferences of the console? These are all important info to have to operate a console I think. Maybe it's just me that is more advanced in console operation than the audience you were aiming at. Anyway, it was a great start for me, I'll keep looking videos here and there!

    Absolutely the best, most informative video available for this console. Soundcraft should hire you, seriously!! Their videos may be good if you have a background in sound. For me their literature has been frustrating to say the least.
    They [soundcraft] gloss over things so quickly ---
    ```````EXAMPLE SOUNDCRAFT VIDEO````````
    Video Title "The complete Guide to Routing,Signal path, Mixing, Producing, and how to Disassemble and Re-assemble an Atom Bomb"
    Video Length - 2min 43 sec.
    Like i said maybe if one is experienced, the videos are helpful, but for me they just cracked the door open and said "have a little peak". You just swung the door wide open!
    I am new to this side of things, a musician for years, but very little experience with sound production.
    I have been watching and reading literature for about a year now. And this is no doubt the most insight I have gained regarding this console.
    I have had the board for about 5 months, but haven't really had that much hands on time for one reason or another.
    I cant thank you enough, the last 30 minutes have been the most valuable and productive 30 minutes i have spent in this learning.
    Thank you again!
    P.S.
    I have a question/questions regarding routing sound through the console into DAW and then back into the console to actually use the board to mix, or something like that. I suspect its possible, I think i may need a multi-digital card in addition to the USB/MADI. But i haven't really done enough research yet, so i don't want to be lazy.
    But, if it is not possible, perhaps you could save me a bit of time?
    Thank you again!!!!
      Hello Phri -- I apologize - this is one thing I neglected to address in the video.
      *1st, Select FX1, 2, 3, or FX4 directly below the screen. These FX sends effectively act like additional aux sends, or mixes, that are dedicated to effects.
      *Push the fader up on the vocal you wish to affect. Doing this will send that vocal's signal to the effect engine.
      *Make sure the effects returns are turned on, and the fader is up. This is where the effected signal is returned to the mix. This is seen on "Layer B," on the main mix. See 20:08 - 20:22 in the video.
      You'll also need to play around with editing the effects on the screen. Hopefully this helps!
      If you are asking about the SI Impact, the power switch is located in the back of the console. You can find the switch directly above the port you connect to AC power. It is on it's side. If you have your mixer connected to power and the power plug firmly inserted into the console but the console is not on, flip the switch the other direction. The mixer takes a minute or two to boot up.
    • @GrantConklin
      Great question. I sold this mixer to a customer, so the only way I can check is with the simulator. Clicking on Menu --> Insert --> Insert setup, you can choose where 22 insert sends and returns come and go from. Until I can get my hands on another console, I'm not sure how the inserts work with the compressor. You can download the simulator here: www.soundcraft.com/en-US/softwares/si-offline-impact-v1-2-6-not-compatible-with-si-impact-2-0-firmware-to-be-addressed-in-a-future-update
      I just got off the phone with my Soundcraft rep. First, download the drivers at www.soundcraft.com/en-US/softwares/soundcraft-multichannel-usb-audio-driver-v3-20
      You'll need to map the Direct outputs of the Si input channels to the USB card, as well as mapping the USB input channels to the SI impacts inputs. I don't have a video that shows this, but this one seems to do an ok job of describing it especially starting at 2:15: th-cam.com/video/b5t7mowkXFQ/w-d-xo.html For another perspective, try this one: th-cam.com/video/GMgqbufzbug/w-d-xo.html
      From that point, it should be as simple as using your DAW software to map the audio inputs to your DAW tracks.
      Sometime this Summer Soundcraft is supposed to be upgrading their firmware to handle more input channels -- I think it's like 64 inputs plus 8 stereo returns. When they do that, you'd be able to record and playback without re-patching anything.
      If you're interested in ordering one, please let me know!
    Good video but... A Smiley Face on your EQ? Seriously!!! People! Do NOT do smiley faces, or frowns. Don't touch your output EQ unless you know what you are doing! For example, get an RTA analyzer app and run pink noise if you wanna EQ a room. Do NOT arbitrarily set EQ bands to a "face"!! That is sooooo amateur and incorrect! Look for other great videos on ringing out monitors and EQ'ing a room!
      Thanks for your comment, William. Notice at 36:17 that I say I don't advocate "smiley face" eq's. I was speaking very generally about the graphic EQ function, not the proper way to EQ. By the way, Using an RTA is actually very amateuer. Even as far back as the 80's, the TEF analyzer was far superior to RTA. I have been trained in SMAART, which is a dual channel FFT analyzer. SMAART, Systune, or other dual channel FFT type analyzers are the only tools that professionals should be using today. Also, professionals use equalizers to tune sound systems, not rooms. Rooms can only be tuned with proper acoustic treatment. I hope this helps.
