Remember listening to this in a darkened room in 1982 when I was sent abroad to college. I hated the first few weeks there, then slowly accepted it, and loved it, ended up being one of the best few years of my life. And I was in Lausanne, Switzerland, a few stops away from Queens recording studios, although never knew it then. Last year, I went back to see friends, and visited Queens recording studio in Montreux and saw Freddie's statue. I am 50 now, I was 16 back then. Love you Fred, such a big part of my life 💕
You are so fortunate Mark. I've wanted to do the pilgrimage but haven't had the chance. I've been a Queen fan since 1974. Loved these guys from the first time I heard them on my radio ... I was gaga over them. I was a nurse way back then and worried a lot about Freddie and his carefree lifestyle. The medical community in the late 1970s as a whole were worried when we got the first few HIV cases. We had no idea what it was - it was like they had some weird kind of leukemia. It wasn't until 1983 that Researchers found out it was caused by a virus. My heart went out to Brian, Roger and John as they watched their brother slowly dying before their eyes. What a horrible time for all of them. When we lost Freddie we lost a legend - not just him but the 3 surviving members of Queen too. They were in mourning for a long time before they could function again and John threw in the towel which meant that Brian and Roger lost 2 brothers not just one. The fact that Brian and Roger are currently touring is such a blessing. Both of them live for their music and they are both Queen's essence. It was Brian and Roger initially in 1968-69 and it seems we've come full circle. The fact that Brian and Roger are happy to reach out to fans online is a blessing. This whole album is a masterpiece. It's a shame you never hear a single song from it played on the radio, just Bohemian Rhapsody over and over and over again. I guess that makes it more special though.
Same can be said of many great bands, that's why the recording company releases "Greatest Hits" collections, I would say the first 5-7/8 years of Queens existence there output could largely be labeled "Rock", even though ample songs in this era were better labeled pop, I can't say "Bring back Leroy Brown" is something I would label as "Rock" (and even better than calling it "Dixieland", just throw it in the middle of a mix of other "rock" or "pop" songs). Led Zepplin for instance, surely a serious influence on Queen, also wedged non "rock" songs in between hard rock and "heavy metal" tunes, to great affect in my opinion..."Fool in the Rain" would be more appropriately called "Reggae" or "Carribien" than 'rock", no harm as I feel it makes the band more interesting than the same old thing song after song! I have read one of Queen's great hits was originally going to be put out as a "Country" style song...though it worked for Elton John early on, I can't ever quite imagine Freddie in a cowboy hat as a country crooner! I lived through the 70's and AOR (album oriented rock) where some stations would play an entire album, therefore exposing the audience to a much wider spectrum of a bands sound than just top 40/20/10 hits, this required an audience with much greater attention span, and generally created life time fans of the bands exposed.
@@derekemrie2987 I thing Queen were influenced by Led Zep and the Beatles when they started, but they developped their own style with A night at the opera
How did Brian write this song when he was so young? It's uncanny. Makes me cry as it did 40 years ago. His dad helped him build the red special.....after being some sort of boffin who helped win the war. There is something terribly English about it. " A word in your ear" that's a very middle class expression you don't hear anymore. It's that old fashioned, reserved stiff upper lip England trying to communicate across the generation gap. There is so much empathy in this song which is why I find it so moving despite it being a very refined bit of heavy rock. Master of feedback and echo too. Q2 is my favourite album.
Love it when Deacon visits the high notes on his bass 3:40. He often does that in the rock'n'roll live pieces, too. It adds glory to the instrumental parts.
I was so fortunate to catch the Queen II tour... They played this song, and I've found a recording of the show I was at.. Brian, Freddy.. I knew they were great, but they exceeded my expectations 10 fold..
I nearly cry when I hear "Take this letter that I give you because you'll write it again before you die" means so much after losing my father so many, many years ago. My beautiful father who made and gave me everything I am now, and now I hope to be the man who passes on the same to my glorious grandson.

I feel like Queen has no bad songs, of course some songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, under pressure or radio gaga are better but there is very little drop off between their " hit songs" and their relatively unknown songs like " father to son", " Spread your wings" or " keep yourself alive". Thats what makes them special. For example, as good as Led zeppelin is and their stairway to heaven song is, some of their songs on their albums are terrible, I have to skip over them. I am a 60-year-old man (father of two - both DAUGHTERS)....and "Father To Son" was and still is my favorite Queen song ever....before I had kids and especially since.....I've always loved the music and harmony of the song....and just recently I dwelt on the lyrics moreso, and man are they beautiful to a fella with children.....especially (as you, loucap81, pointed out) the part before the fadeout where Freddie so beautifully sings "but the air you need I live to give you"....that lovely part right there, segueing into that that terrific fadeout, is about as good as rock music gets in my opinion. I was staining my deck the other day when that song randomly (out of 16,000 on my phone's hard drive) came up....and like I said, I've always loved that song...but when it got to THAT part, it hit me like never before...and my eyes became so moist with love for my kids that I had to stop and wipe away the tears before I could see to paint. I'm thankful that I have such a passion for rock music. Can't play a lick, but I sure love songs like "Father To Son" and I will until the day I die. I'm glad you agree with me, loucap81!
Take this letter that I give you , take it sonny ,hold it high , you won’t understand a word that's in it But you'll write it out again before you die 😭😭🖤🙌🏻 this song break my heart 👌🏻
I can remember hearing this for the first time as a 12 year old in my mate´s bedroom and it totally blew my mind ! All of the band on top form . The way Brian makes his guitar sing on the closing chorus and fade-out still gives me goose-bumps. Timeless genius !
Their first 2 albums are mind blowing.I love all their work but with the first albums they really started something special in the great rock era (60s,70s).
What a brilliant showman Freddie Murcury was! He always had the audience in the palm of his hand always love watching Queen's concerts, Brian May is very good guitarist with a distinctive style, so good hearing their music!
Queen II and Jazz are my favorite albums, but I really enjoy Queen, Sheer Heart Attack, Innuendo, The Game, and A Night at the Opera. I have other albums from them that are great too, but I listen to those the most!
It's always been an emotionally charged song, but since my dad died I can't listen to this and keep a dry eye. I was learning to play it on the guitar the other day and thinking of my father and now my son.. Brian you swine you, you got me bro.
In early days, Queen had got over the follower of Zep, Sabbath or Yes. Queen in the middle of 70's is right for being called as reincarnation of The Beatles.
The summer of 1975. I had this album on repeat, the music book for this album and I used to play along on my Gibson (copy) and I had a 100 watt amp.....magical days...
Imagine writing poems to your music, and you happen to have an audacious buddy who changed his name from Farouk Bulsara to Freddie Mercury who wants so badly to be in your band, and sing those words for you... birth of a galaxy big...
Greg Bow I know. I'm telling you that Freddie, Brian and Roger have done some SOLO work, and wrote songs for Queen. John did actually wrote awesome songs, but he didn't do any SOLO work. Correct me if I'm wrong, that's how I think of this
Lili Diamond True that. But this is Queen's channel. This is the "best of Queen", Freddie, Brian, Roger and John. He must be mentionned. Their solo work has nothing to do with that imo. It's like, idk, a bonus here on the channel.
I can totally relate. On my 13th birthday in 1980, I bought Queen 2. Within a month, I could sing along to the entire album by heart. Probably the album I played over and over the most in my early teens.
I praise this album all the time. The first three Queen albums are my favorites of their body of work. And no one really gets it unless you're someone who knows them as well as the people who have commented here.
This was the first album I ever listened to through quality headphones …never forget that magical experience…..also easier for children to accept a new style of music (I was 13)..this album seems to have been passed by, by the music industry.
It's funny that this great song had such strong meaning in the lyrics, just years after listening to it for the first time I got the meaning of them (coincidentally when I was old enough to get them). Thanks so much for sharing this superb album with us!

@@DavidPuddyThatsRight this is my favorite song and Queen 2 is my favorite album by them, timeless masterpiece
I love all from 4:00 til 5:00, It seems that he changes 3 ir 4 times de Voice.
2:41 is nothing to sneeze at either.
It's rare that a rock and roll song can truly give me goosebumps! Holy wow.
Take this letter that I give you , take it sonny ,hold it high , you won’t understand a word that's in it
But you'll write it out again before you die 😭😭🖤🙌🏻 this song break my heart 👌🏻
Love how truly great bands have plenty of hidden pearls that are even better than most of their hits
This song is fantastic not only the meaning of the words but that incredible guitar playing by May. Wow!
Brian’s vocals brings me to heaven
I never had a Father. I love this song. Thank you Freddie, John, Brian and Roger. Beautiful. :-)
God bless you...LONG LIVE QUEEN...🇬🇧
But are you a father?
Ofc you had a father, otherwise you wouldn't be here you dohnut......
Me too
Astonishing. Even as kids these guys saw the whole picture and were able to bottle it. Whole album is amazing. 1974.
Another gem from early Queen the second &third albums I really think are some of their best work
I can remember hearing this for the first time as a 12 year old in my mate´s bedroom and it totally blew my mind ! All of the band on top form . The way Brian makes his guitar sing on the closing chorus and fade-out still gives me goose-bumps. Timeless genius !
I always liken Brian's solos to be the orgasm of the song!!?? Or is it me?...
+Steven Stratton It´s you.........no seriously, I nearly had one when I first heard this staggering song.
I played this album over and over during the summer of 1975
Whenever Queen decided to be a metal band... they were one of the best
Wow its amazing how underrated is this song! I think it is one of the best song of Queen!
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
"Funny, you don't hear a single word I say"
I fucking love you queen, and thankyou Brian, for writing this art.
My father has died two days ago, I feel support with this song
Their first 2 albums are mind blowing.I love all their work but with the first albums they really started something special in the great rock era (60s,70s).
Thank you, Limitless for reminding me about this track.
This is absolutely one of their best songs ever. One of my favourites from Queen ❤
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
Absolutely love Queen 2 album, my favourite Queen album.
White Queen is my favourite Queen song oall time, its beautiful.
What a brilliant showman Freddie Murcury was! He always had the audience in the palm of his hand always love watching Queen's concerts, Brian May is very good guitarist with a distinctive style, so good hearing their music!
if you want to check out the most underrated Queen songs go listen to Queen II.
rufio'smousse Brian May says about Queen II that its his favourite album of anything Queen made.
T.I.N Mateus the Brian may has good ears
rufio'smousse also yeah these songs are incredibly underrated but I say jazz is underrated quite a bit
Queen II and Jazz are my favorite albums, but I really enjoy Queen, Sheer Heart Attack, Innuendo, The Game, and A Night at the Opera. I have other albums from them that are great too, but I listen to those the most!
I almost forgot News of the World, I'm very fond of that one too.
That ending is really the best Queen had offered in their long career. Epic!
That ending destroys me every time I hear it.
I love early Queen when they still had those heavy metal elements. They brought it back in Innuendo and it was fantastic!
It's always been an emotionally charged song, but since my dad died I can't listen to this and keep a dry eye. I was learning to play it on the guitar the other day and thinking of my father and now my son.. Brian you swine you, you got me bro.
QUEEN ALWAYS WILL BE ETERNAL ACTUALS IN OUR HEARTS !!!
BIG BAND ....
LONGINGS !!!
HUGS FROM BRAZIL,
ROSANGELA D'ORO
I suffrer from "queenoholism"... You too???
Yeaah me too
Trouble is, when I tried to turn things over to my higher power like the 12-steps said, Brian May told me he didn't have time to handle my problems.

@@temporaryprofile6775 Да, от кръв и плът :)
0:34 this is so killer
any other guitarist would just strum
HE SLIDED INTO IT, CHILLS
I loved this album as a kid It's still the best
Queen II is a perfect album and every song is exceptional. But for me, this one hits very hard to my soul personally. Such a deep and beautiful song.
One of my favorite Queen's songs.
Listening to my Queen playlist is just a roulette of what song will be stuck in my head next.
Anytime I listen to this album I have a dumb grin on my face because it is a truly magical album.
My favourite Queen song
+Fairy Fello Sure, but this is my favourite :)
I like all the albums and all the songs of the group, but this is my favorite LP, you can still feel the innocence and majesty that they are all
1.Father to son & The march of the black Queen (in fact every song of Queen II)
2.The prophet's song
3.The millionaire waltz
4.Liar
5.Innuendo
The best Queen album by far. Absolutely incredible!
Imagine writing poems to your music, and you happen to have an audacious buddy who changed his name from Farouk Bulsara to Freddie Mercury who wants so badly to be in your band, and sing those words for you... birth of a galaxy big...
Such an underrated album like much of queens stuff
+iiElysium x Not ever underrated by true Queen fans, but in general, yes ...
+Ad van Tuil Definitely agreed.
i think queen II is their best album
+Luis Ramirez . have to agree. it is a masterpiece.
For me it's Sheer Heart Attack, listen to it, fantastic, not important wich one...
The musicianship in this band is amazing
この楽曲は、今回、初めて視聴しましたが、Queenの作品ということが、よく分かります❗随所に、特徴のある独特のQueen調があるからです🎼
May is the best EVER!!! And for EVER!!!!!
I love all of the Queen albums (even Hot Space!) but Queen and Queen II are something special. ❤️ 🎸
"See the best of Freddie Mercury, Brian May & Roger Taylor right here on TH-cam." What about John ?
Greg Bow John didn't do any solo work. He only did a song with a band in the late eighties I think..
Lili Diamond You're wrong. He wrote songs in the 70s. For exemple Spread Your Wings. And without John, Queen wouldn't be Queen.
Greg Bow The members of Queen have made solo artwork. But still, they were on Queen. This is what I mean
Queen 1 + Queen 2 are incredible
Pure poetry ... but the air you breath, I live to give you !
2:41 I just love this riff.
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
Father to Son. The best track on Queen's best album. Discuss.
This song makes me want to have a son and show him what good music is. Thank you Queen for everything. 4:04 is just heartbreaking. So beautiful.
One of the most underrated songs ever,it's just so good...
I literally played this album to death, on the old tape, played it so much it wore out.
I can totally relate. On my 13th birthday in 1980, I bought Queen 2. Within a month, I could sing along to the entire album by heart. Probably the album I played over and over the most in my early teens.
It's an ignored masterpiece indeed.
Why you gotta get a vinyl. They last forever
@@radiotimes2100 Wait, how? You bought it in 1980? Isn't Queen II released in 1974?
@@sxtright_anirudh7299 80 comes after 74
That album is complete master peice you coud tell bohemian rhapsody was on its way. To confirm everything
I praise this album all the time. The first three Queen albums are my favorites of their body of work. And no one really gets it unless you're someone who knows them as well as the people who have commented here.
2:05-2:15 wearing full volume headphones is like a drug. Pure chills up and down my entire body, ive never experienced anything like it
This was the first album I ever listened to through quality headphones …never forget that magical experience…..also easier for children to accept a new style of music (I was 13)..this album seems to have been passed by, by the music industry.
It's better than drugs
Queen - A New Hope
Queen II - Empire Strikes Back
Sheer Heart Attack - Return Of The Jedi
This is of course the hymn of loving fathers.
It's funny that this great song had such strong meaning in the lyrics, just years after listening to it for the first time I got the meaning of them (coincidentally when I was old enough to get them). Thanks so much for sharing this superb album with us!
A WORD IN YOUR EAR FROM FATHER TO SOOOOOOON 🗣️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
From the best Queen album
