    A little tip for Caddy owners is GM shared many parts across platforms. Back when I worked in a parts store in the mid 70's 1970's Caddy brake parts were the same part numbers as Chevy Caprice station wagons. If you ordered the parts for the Caddy it cost almost twice as much as if you ordered them for the Chevy. I still do the cross reference thing for Corvette parts because the price difference is still applicable. A part number for a Vette will always be higher then the same one used on a Caprice or Camaro.

    I own several classic Chevies and Pontiacs, some of them for over fourty years. I bet the old brake cylinders were much, much better and they did not have to be fixed or replaced in over twenty years. Now I experienced leaking on newer cylinders more than once. I bet the quality of the materials seems not to be the same anymore. When I replaced rear brake shoes on my 63 Chevy a friend gave me NOS ones with asbestos. The braking experience with those old shoes is better than with any new material.

    Interesting video Ben. I've got two Caddy's a 52 and 53. The 53 is a convertible with an I beam frame. It has huge drum brakes and they work fine for my taste. The 52 is a 4dr Sedan and has smaller diameter rear drum brakes. It too stops well. But I noticed doing 80 on the highway and coming onto a short off ramp to a red light is quite exhilarating ! Gets the heart pumping! You'd have to pay good money at an amusement park to enjoy a ride like that! i get it for free!

    Shouldn’t you start the bleeding process on the right rear? Farthest from the master etc?

    I would not put that front end booster kit on my 55 caddy. I went with the booster and master on the firewall kit with the swing pedal conversion. Had to reroute some brake lines but very happy with it. I don’t use the heater anyway so eliminated all of the heater components anyway. Stops great with drum brakes all around. Might switch out to disc later. Liked your video on that!

    I am very old school. I never wanted to convert any car to discbrakes. This oldfashionned drum system was good enough for ages. And unless you race or drive on very steep mountain roads brake fade is not an issue. I had problem very few times as I live in mountainous Switzerland and love to drive over passes very often.
    I am anti old school when it comes to bias tires. They are absolutely shitty. It was a quantum leap when I replaced those tires with new radial ones.

      Caddy Daddy is a last resort when you can't find a rare part. He deserves his prices on those. Brake parts should usually be available somewhere else.

      Back in the 1980's I drove a '63 Caddy as my daily driver. While I despise drum brakes in general, I was very happy with the braking ability of the factory drums. But if you have money to burn, why not...

      Unless you are changing the ENTIRE brake system to one that is specific to your car and not some universal kit, DO NOT DO IT. I highly suggest watching a recent Livestream done by Uncle Tony's Garage and Dead Dodge Garage on this exact subject. Making a conversion to discs like this can actually cost lives...

    If a company is selling a product, they should be able to supply technical and installation data to their customers.

    Ben don't be discouraged! We get it. You're dragged out over a not great experience. But I am sorry to say, you are in many ways our guinea pig for these experiments. That, didn't quite sound like I'd hoped. Instead of "guinea pig," think "adventureror" or something even more flattering. The point is we learn and, that you have suffered for it, well, thanks. Sorry, but, love ya, kid.

    I guess I'd understand a reseller not having a lot of experience if they were offering a budget kit or a single part. But for 2 grand, it doesn't seem unreasonable for them to have a good mechanic try it and offer tips whether someone they employ or not. Sounds like they just bundled parts and did the geometry work needed to fabricate brackets.

    • @TheCorvetteBen
      @TheCorvetteBen  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The kit is “technically “ exclusive to caddy daddy, as they are the only ones who offer that kit that keeps the booster and MC in the 1956 factory location. Either way they should be more help then they were

    Another rear brake rebuild after 10 years seems a little soon. Since there was no internal rust or pitting, it appears to be the seals. Maybe poor quality. Or maybe the brake fluid? Lubricants and hydraulic fluids need to contain materials that cause seals to swell slightly, not dry out and shrink over time.

      No, STOPPING is not overrated but neither is STOPPING SAFELY which most disc brake conversions WON'T DO because the entire system is not matched and in a critical stopping situation can cause the car that seemed to brake great, to spin out of control

  • @johnmilner7603
    @johnmilner7603 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I use the hand pump type bleeder and it seems to work fine. When I get a stubborn wheel I call my wife over to run the pedal in a 2 person bleed. BTW your lighting needs an improvement. For the price of new wheel cyl, I don’t know why your wasting your time honing and rebuilding the old ones.

    • @1575murray
      @1575murray ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of the new wheel cylinders being made today are cheap copies made in China which do not hold up well.

    • @TheCorvetteBen

      Maybe on a Chevy, but you save quite a bit of money on a Cadillac wheel cylinder.

    "Universal Fit" usually means run the other way, because it fits nothing.

  • @todddenio3200
    @todddenio3200 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Unless the ENTIRE brake system is matched to the vehicle and that means ALL 4 WHEELS, proportioning valve, master cylinder and booster, DO NOT CHANGE IT FROM STOCK. The conversion may seem to work fine under normal driving, but under a critical stopping situation an unmatched system is likely to cause the vehicle to spin out and can result in an accident or can even cost someones life. Recently Uncle Tony's Garage and Dead Dodge Garage did a Livestream together on this exact subject.. and I highly recommend watching it because the life you savemay be yours or more importantly that of someone you love or even a total stranger. If you want to risk your own life is one thing but to risk someone else's life is totally unacceptable.

    • @JimBaldwin-x3t

      I’ve done loads of conversion brake jobs on Chevys and Cadillacs and have never had a problem. The modern brake parts were made to work fine on older cars. A car either stops or doesn’t. Look at the crappy ford mustangs that spin around with hard brake applications! I don’t agree with your post! It’s all about being experienced and knowing how to do them correctly.
