Australian Shepherds and Miniature American Shepherds are active dogs! The breeds developed as stockdogs on ranches; they worked hard all day herding livestock and keeping watch over their people. They were bred to have stamina and lots of energy.
Aussies and MAS that aren't working on ranches are used for other types of work including Search and Rescue, crisis response, police work, narcotics detection, utility dogs for the handicapped, hearing-ear and seeing-eye dogs, seizure detection dogs, and therapy dogs. These breeds need to burn all their energy, so they excel at dog sports like agility, flyball, frisbee (disc), dock diving, mushing and ski-jouring, rally, obedience, dancing, tricks and much more!
