I have this EXACT turbo on my 2012 RAM.... at 82K miles the turbo started sounding like a hairdryer, and the exhaust brake quit working. DTC 2262. Dealer wanted over $4,000 to replace the turbo (they wouldn't rebuild it), and it was waaaaay out of warranty (time-wise), so I tore it apart myself in my driveway. Found a tab had broken off the back of the VGT nozzle (apparently these four tabs held on two "filters") jamming the VGT nozzle and keeping the exhaust brake partially on. So I rebuilt the turbo with an aftermarket kit (about $100) and replaced the VGT nozzle with a new aftermarket one (about $150) and used the "autoenginuity" software to pre-align and calibrate the actuator (about $450). So far over 1000 miles on it, no leaks or codes, works like it should. On the other hand my buddy has a 2009 with 240K and never had any turbo issues at all. I understand Holset doesn't put a "filter" in the VGT nozzles any longer. So yeah, over time every good company has to periodically revise their products, and Holset did so. I love my diesel truck and the Holset turbo, it was easy to work on. And I am NOT a mechanic by any means LOL
I work on trucks with these turbos. I like that some of the parts are made here in the U.S. My question is what will it take to make all the parts here? With all the technology we have, can't we compete with other countries on manufacturing? I know our wages are higher than other countries. I guess I like to hope we can do better and have more manufacturing here.
Any luck with the last replacement? What are you running now ? My 6.7 actuator is faulty . And I’m going to just replace the turbo completely. Any advice ?
all that emission crap kill these turbos ...go on any forum they die in 30k if your lucky...the tolerances or to tight once they have carbon build up they get stuck.
It's all about corporate rule of our country and getting the cheapest parts made by populations who work for less can be managed more and the toxic wastes and other environmental concerns are not present in these other countries. This has made it so that companies still make a huge profit but they are not contributing to the workforce in their own country or to the tax base it is called globalization or the d industrialization of America which began 30 years ago and is now cannibalized its own.
Why? China is good a manufacturing things. The problem is "you get what you pay for" so don't go expecting the cheap turbo you buy from Ebay is going to be just as good as a turbo from Garrett. China manufacturers high quality products like the Iphone and MacBooks yet not one complains about their build quality. China can manufacture just as will as any other western country but since all the cheap goods people buy are usually made in China creates a stereotype of "{made in China" bad.
You are joking right? Every single product that I’ve ever bought that says made in China I end up replacing six months tops. For some reason when I pay twice or even four times the cost it’s stamped from Japan or USA they last for years.

They would be crap because of american manufacturing tolerances.
China and India? I understand them making Durex and iPhone, but why our turbos? WTF?
