    • @illitero

Sound travels better off of and through most liquids. Oil would likely mute it a bit, but it would be a sloshy mess to fill it enough to contact the PCB or generate a higher pitch keystroke sound from reducing the effective size of the sound cavity. But hey, who isn't down for a sloppy, wet keyboard? hahaha

Kinda cool fact: one of the chemicals used to make aerogel, tetramethyl orthosilicate, is basically pure sand but in liquid form. It reacts with water to turn into its solid form, and becomes super super fine, but is insanely dangerous. This is because if you get it in your eyes it reacts with the water in your eyes and turns solid, but does so under the surface of your eyeballs, and causes permanent blindness. Also if you inhale it then it reacts with the water in your lungs, and having sand in your lungs is bad (shocker).

Honest thoughts from someone who isn’t in the keyboard scene and only clicked because I wanted to see something done with aerogel (thanks a LOT) here’s what I thought of each noise.
No foam- my favorite of the bunch.
Foam- sounds exactly the same as no foam but like the audio was pitched up. Deeper sounded better.
Aerogel- sounded akin to our crazy neighbor Caryn from Las Vegas who would tap her acrylic fingernails really fast on our ceramic counter when she got really into talking very loudly about something that made her anxious. A bit too solid sounding and gave me shivers in a bad way. (Does this count as childhood trauma?)
My iPhone keyboard clicks through my headphones as I type this message that will get me hate probably- 10/10 😂
BUT- whoever this guy is, I like listening to him and his humor more than I like listening to the keyboards. My computer is a 2001 dell with a 20 year old crayola keyboard so maybe I’m biased to the nostalgic plasticky tapping sound.

That aerogel dampening sounds really good.

  • @suyangsong
    @suyangsong ปีที่แล้ว

for _sure_ the aerogel. Holy shit the difference is huge.
But it's interesting because it doesn't sound like it just "dampens" the sound, it actually changes the resonance characteristics of the sound, and where the fundamental frequencies of the (switches? board?) are located. Especially obvious on the bigger keys like spacebar

why not try like shrink wrapping the aerogel foam so the powder doesnt get everywhere that might hurt the sound dampening properties though idk

Having studied stage technics, recording etc. it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me to use something really light like this as a sound damper. I mean sure, it would affect the way the sound reflects in the case, but to properly insulate sound needs mass.
I've never modded a keyboard, but just baaed on what I learned at school, I'd pick some material that's dense (heavy) but also irregular or porous. Like a really heavy foam mat or some natural rubber with an irregular surface.

I think the main draw of aerogel is as an insulator for high temperatures, right?

this is neat but doesnt aerogel ha e the drawback of it losing its shape from constant pressure like that because its so much air that after a while the air will just be pushed out after 6 months to year of repeated use where the sound will end up just be back to as if there is no foam?

  • @illitero

I was so confused with the title because Aerogel is very hard, and hard surfaces reflect sound. It's only really useful as a thermal insulator, so not really sure where the theory came from that it'd make for a good dampener. Good to know I was right in being dubious of its ability to dampen sound, I guess?

Buy a tank of Argon Gas. Place a keyboard into a foil tray and slowly leal the Argon into the tray.
