I’ll never forget when a well known runner of a favorite game of mine got lost. It surprised me. I naturally assumed they knew the game inside and out. Turns out, they know the route inside and out.
I had this kind of experience with REmake 1 a couple years back. I ran the game and was pretty damn good back in the early 2010s but wanted to revisit it back in 2020. It has been like 6 years so my memories of the route were hazy, but because my brain wanted to run the game the same way I had done dozens of times before it refused to let me run on instinct.
The result was a playthrough that ended up producing a lot of genuine fear. Misremembering the order of certain events, when to do what and not having certain execution down to pure muscle memory anymore made me flub up and get myself into a boatload of issues.
In the end it almost felt like playing the game for the first time again. I like to imagine it was a similar experience that those who grew up loving the PS1 original felt when playing REmake for the first time on Gamecube. So familiar yet so foreign!

Watching this is quite interesting as someone who enjoys DMC1 as a game but never thought to speedrun it. That being said, I have an idea for something that could possibly save 10-15 seconds on the first Nelo fight in mission 4 if you can route the orbs to get vortex 2 at that point.
Simply put, once Nelo teleports a third time to the top platform, if you have vortex 2 and enough DT meter, you can just vortex to him and continue slash canceling until the fight ends.
I never use items so this is how I've always done it. Hope this helps, and again, always cool to see speedruns of my personal favorite DMC.
good suggestion, i actually tried this, but it doesn't save time because you have to loop a few extra times due to lack of dt since you vortexed
@@waifurunstv gotcha. Figured it was at least worth a shot since it seemed to work on my own time, but like I said I don't actually run thf game. Mighty try this run though, since I'll take any excuse to replay DMC1.

It's encouraging to see a big speedrunner doing stuff like this. I don't run professional, but I do some casual stuff, and I don't really adhere to categories very often. When I do, it's usually 100% (I can even get a fairly competitive time in Cyber-Shadow 100%!) to get the most gameplay out of it. Basically, I just like getting the most out of the game, and sometimes I like doing it fast. My next project will probably be "MGS3 all areas/eliminate all". No one will care, but I will enjoy myself. ;D

There's a cancel you can do with the shotgun to fire faster than normal. When you fire the shotgun, flick the stick in any direction to cancel the recovery animation; the shotgun fires faster, doing more DPS and probably saving you some time as well.
Yep it’s called shotgun twitching and you can’t skewer crit shadows with the shotgun without it
So it seems like a 36 is possible if the stars aligned on the RNG and you performed the mechanics nearly perfectly? Kinda neat to know. Makes you wonder what the leaderboard looks like in an alt timeline where no items was the main category. Sure a lot of knowledge and optimizations were made in your experiment, but you always have to wonder what else there is to uncover there.
Who knows, maybe the ceiling for no items is higher than any% if someone was insane enough to optimize things further to make things more consistent and suffer through what isn't until they get good RNG.
I would love to see it pushed further to be honest, I didn’t get into it in this video but completely rerouted any% with items thanks to the discoveries from running this. That should be in the next one hopefully
Seems there might be some route changes to the any% run in the future. Particularly the one-cycle on Nightmare without using holy water. The extra orbs saved from not having to route in so many holy waters might even mean early vortex becomes a thing and significantly lowers the record.

When I play Super Mario Bros 3 I play with an invented speedrun category called the Million Points Run. You just beat the game anyway you can but you have to have a million points by the end or it doesn't count. I can do it in a little over an hour. I like it because I can still use warp whistles and don't have to play every stage, but playing most of the game is required to get that many points.
"How fast can you go in normal any% without using items" Do you not consider purple orbs items, if not what are they? Also if Cheese Ruins Devil May Cry Speedrunning then why are you using things that are objectively cheese? An example is the first Nero fight where you use a technique that you have a full segment explaining how it's not intended and how it's taking advantage of Nero's ai who in your own words is "not programed to be able to deal with it." I'm personally am okay with most cheesy strategies but your actions go directly against your title and narrative which causes a weird dissonance. Regardless it was an enjoyable watch and I'm glad you are making new ways to have fun with Devil May Cry.
True but it’s much more fun to slash cancel nelo by actually fighting him, the difference between doing a technique that has to mastered and just opening the menu is huge. As for purple orbs, having more dt was never something that made the game less fun or cheesy again it’s a skill you have to master. The cheese that I meant to be removing was the stuff that lowered the skill ceiling by just making everything easy, having more dt makes the game harder because you have to do more complex manipulation of your dt.

idk, FGC and FPS game players come pretty close to matching speedrunners in the amount of time they sink into a game.

seeing the insane any% runs is in it self intresting that some games do, but a game like DMC series tend to have many different kind of mechanics that always find unique ways to beat the game in much more intresting ways

I think an interesting spin could be that you are allowed 3 items per run. You get to choose what you buy and it'll probably be holy water most of the time, but I think it could be used to skip some of the unfun rng while still being an interesting category. Perhaps the total score could matter as well? I'm not sure; it's 2am and I know nothing about this game lol

SKILL ISSUE
This is my issue with a lot of speedrun categories. You just find ways to skip or avoid chunks of the game and completely ignore some mechanics of the game that genuinely make the game an amazing experience. In some cases, it even requires you to play in a style that's not just fun to play in the slightest, and once you get to that point, what's the point of even playing the game if it's no longer fun? Some of these older games are genuine fun, and I want to play them in a competitive sense, but speedrunning ain't it. For me at least.
This has always been my argument with runs that use OOB or glitches - and I'm talking strictly as a viewer here. Watching someone phase out into the void and just run for five minutes straight isn't entertaining and doesn't reflect mastery over the gameplay, which is kind of what I came to see. Unfortunately, those categories are often what dominate the leaderboards, with seemingly few people wanting to tackle glitchless runs (or my personal favorite, glitchless 100% runs). Not to say that performing OOB or glitches doesn't require skill - it certainly does, and I respect those that master it - but it just doesn't seem like a very fun way to play most games.
I think it really depends on the game some times it’s way more fun and interesting than normal gameplay and other times it is definitely not
@@waifurunstva good example of a glitch run that arguably takes more skill than the normal way would be the portal 1 speed run. I remember watching a narrated run and was in awe of the pixel perfect portals.
The cheese problem is why I prefer to only watch meme runs and GDQ. The absurdity of meme runs is entertaining, and the GDQ commentary and banter is just lovely.
