  • Hello Music lovers! Welcome to episode 2 of the Woodshed! When i asked what you wanted me to cover in this episode you spoke and i listened! You guys asked for a guitar lesson on emulating the sound of guys like Eric Johnson and Joe Bonamassa. This is NOT a "heres the EJ or JB lick" rather, this is a lesson on the concepts i use to emulate their phrasing, and "sound" When Im playing this stuff, im not just reusing specific licks, but instead im trying to use these 3 steps to sound more like them

Thank you for talking in intervals instead of just fret numbers. I had a teacher that used to say if you just memorize the fret numbers you use then you'll know the lick in that key, but if you learn the intervals you'll learn the lick in any key.

100% facts! Memorizing fret numbers is the easy way out and it can be effective, but if you take a few extra minutes and get in the habit of speaking and looking at guitar lines intervalically, it will pay off in spades 🤘

You're a great teacher Andy. I used to work with your dad at Mayland Community College, and I know he was a great instructor. I meant Eric Johnson in person back in 99 he actually gave me the time of day and we had a great 10-minute conversation about life. I recently had the opportunity to do a meet-and-greet with bonamassa 😮 although he's a great player I wish he could be a little more humble to the people who idolize him. That is all

I just bought Andy’s Telecaster Shred course--exactly what I needed--and I'm truly digging his playing right now. He does tend to use some terms in ways I'm not accustomed to. For example, he often uses the word harmony to describe the melody, color, or tonal character of a scale, whereas I've always understood it as the effect produced when two or more notes were played together to create chords or harmonize a melody. But, it’s a minor point. The guy is an incredible player, and it’s obvious there’s a lot to learn from him. I'll definitely soak up as much as I can from him. It's one thing to be able to shred like Batio or Yngwie, but it's something else to be able to pretty much do it all like Andy does. That's the kinda player I'd rather be.

Well I’m glad you’re not playing video games. What an awesome lesson! I appreciate how you have managed to capture a snippet of advice from a life time of guitar playing, and then put it in a short 20 minute video that pretty much anyone can understand. I’ve always struggled with knowing the best way to make the pentatonic lines “smooth”. That’s the first lesson that makes sense to me. Thanks.
But enough talk, time for me to get practising! Keep up the great work Andy!

I've been subscribing from the first Woodshed session, but lately I've been going back over these at watching them with a much more attentive eye/ear. Pure gold! It's far more valuable to learn how to "think guitar" in a few styles than it is to learn a few licks by wrote. Give a man a fish, and you can feed him for a day. Teach him how to think guitar, and who cares about fish.

I don’t know why I’ve never stumbled upon your channel until now. But I have and still am binge watching all your videos. The more I watch the more pissed off I get at myself for not diving in deep years ago. I have always been a very good guitar player but I can’t even hold a flame next to you dude. I am mostly self taught and never had support to progress when I was young but I grew up with a bunch of musicians older than me that took me and a few others my age under their wings and showed us the way. So I have progressed slowly through three marriages, three daughters and eight years in the Air Force and everything else life has thrown in my path...anyway enough of my useless ranting.

I got a lot out of this video. It’s very timely as I just got a little mini lesson from Rick Beato’s Instagram and it was essentially the same concept. Traversing the neck horizontally. I guess that’s how I would describe it. From the nut to the bridge and back, with shorter, linear runs, in between. Whatever it is, it makes sense to me and it’s definitely pushing me into new thought patterns. Yowza!

Uncle Ben Eller plugged the video and I just had to come over and take a look. Great lesson Andy! Ok, I'm a guitar newb. My guitar teacher is teaching me to see/use triads to harmonize the major scale; for soloing ideas, we're exploring all things pentatonic. I would be interested in learning more about how to see/conceptualize the 5 pentatonic box shapes as scale degrees and ultimately as intervals while trying to solo. When playing the boxes, I tend to get lost on what scale degree I'm playing as I move across the strings vertically. I hope all of that makes sense. And if not, well, make some more lessons like this one because it was pretty dang nifty! Thanks man!!

Such a great way to approach a topic like this. Seriously, this is the best lesson I’ve seen in the EJ and Joe Bonamassa style of odd note groupings. Maybe the hexatonic subject is up to date ?? This extra flavor is extremely important. Just adding to your pentatonic the key note to add a specific scale vibe. Not many lessons out there on the subject. thanks for your great efforts Andy !
