- I often get asked how old your quail need to be before you can tell the roosters from the hens. It depends a lot on what type of birds you are raising but in this video I show how to sex young quail at only 3 weeks old.

Great video my Celadon are now a week old fun to watch them and notice the feathers changes the breeder got two of her other birds mix in her pen so not really sure if I got them oh well fun anyway.

is there any way of sexing quails when they are only a day old? Im thinking of getting quail chicks but I'm concerned that I may end up with a bad male to female ratio.
Not really. You can always just eat the extra roosters though.

Hi, it's me again and I was also wondering how big of a pen would I need for 12 quails and where I can buy 12 fertilized Coturnix quail eggs for hatching here in Tampa Florida?
I think I answered your other question about the pen size. As far as buying eggs, i would suggest you go with more than just 12 to ensure you get a decent amount of birds out of the hatch. If you are ordering online you will need to place a bigger order anyway. I do have some discount codes available for Hatch Poultry Farms to order eggs from them (in the description of my newest videos). If you just want a few birds, it may be better to watch craiglist and buy some live birds from someone locally. I hope that helps.
Hello: I have a red tuxedo quail that will 8 weeks old on the 19th of this month. I don't know what sex it is yet but if it's a boy will it crow if there is no other Males or females around? I do have 4 other quails that are 1 week and 3 days old and 15 quail eggs in the incubater. Thank you Danielle.

Thank you. I am so glad you find my channel helpful. As long as it has enough light (14 hours a day) it will start crowing around 8 to 12 weeks old. Maybe even a little sooner. It doesn't matter if they are hens around or not.

Hi Chris many thanks for your videos and sharing of your knowledge, it may be a silly question but can coturnix and Chinese inter breed as I see you have silver coturnix quails
If you are talking about King Quail then no they can't interbreed. They are different species. My silver quail are still coturnix so they can breed with my other coturnix just fine. I hope that helps.

Generally about 2 years. They can live much longer but egg production starts to drop.
Hello, I am thinking about getting about 5 or 6 Coturnix quails and I have a few questions...
1. How big of a cage do I need for them?
2. Will they walk/run up a wooden ramp in like a rabbit hutch?
3. Do they need flying space in their pen?

They are ground birds so they really don't need a big area (to fly) and they probably won't use a ramp much. You can pretty much plan on about 1 square foot per bird. So for 6 quail, I would go with a 6 square foot hutch (2 feet by 3 feet by 18 to 20 inches tall). You might want to get a slightly bigger cage so you can expand in the future and not have to build a new one.

How would you recommend getting rid of flies?
I don't really do much and I don't have too many problems with them. If you cover the dropping with high carbon material (wood chips, dead leaves, dry grass clippings) it will help but you will have to keep on top of it.

So when i bought my "Hens" the breeder sexed them right in front of me. That was 3 days ago.... I got 6 hens and am getting 4 eggs a day.... Having said all that, I'm finding foam in their pen.... Is it possible that that "Hen" was bred just before i got her? Also, it's been 3 days since i got them, and I'm still finding foam.... Not a lot but enough to question him/her.... Lol
Also, no crowing yet, and you'd think it might start soon as i have 2 other roos that are constantly crowing
It is possible. Foam isn't always a sign of roosters though. Chances are the birds will stop laying for a short while so don't be surprised when that happens. Give them some time and they should all start laying consistently.

Yes. No problem at all. I keep mine separate just to keep the bloodlines a little more pure.
I had a full speckled breast but I think it was a male because it was crowing.
It is probable that it is a male if it is crowing.

Well it depends. Some of them may become future breeders. May sell a few to help cover feed costs. Most will probably go to the freezer.
I was able to vent sex one at 6wks, then it started to crow. But I’m having difficulty with his siblings. I have another week before they reach 8wks. Thanks for the info.
