    Thanks, my cousin just have me 3 hens, and a rooster that she's had for pets. I am trying to hatch some eggs so I can get some younger birds going before these are to old. This is exactly what I was looking for.I like how you kept it short, and to the point . I'll be watching more, because I like quail better than chickens, so far. Take care brother

    Thank you! I’m going through most of your videos and I’m considering getting into quail as a way to increase self sufficiency in rural southwest Florida. You make the entire process look simple. Thanks again

    Do you need to squeeze the foam out or can you just see a bulb and know its a male?

    I got some jumbo quail hatching eggs at the auction. I talked to the lady the brought the eggs and I asked her what kind they were and she just gave me a blank stare and told me they were jumbos. the are 3 and a half weeks old and a few of the chests are turning solid brown but not many. I am sure I didn't get 80% female, how much longer do I have to wait to be sure so I can start culling the excesses males and get a couple of breeding groups? Thanks for the help.

    What do you use for leg bands

  • @garrettnichols2719
    @garrettnichols2719 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if it’s past breeding season and you keep them outside. I missed banding my genders and I really am disappointed in myself. I don’t see foam on the ones I know for a fact are male. Tuxedos and whites are hard

      I'm a beginner, but I thought Coturnix quail are always in season, with the possible exception of through winter, when the hens stop laying. It's only non-Coturnix that have limited breeding times.

    I’ll just sit on a bucket and wait for our 6week old English Whites to crow, then I grab and separate the crower. They aren’t making foam yet. I’m worried the neighbors will get mad at the constant noise although it’s not as annoying as their barking dog.

    • @bethe4993
      @bethe4993 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't be worried. If their dog is loud then they should have no problem with a few small birds. 😉

    Thanks for putting together this video. I have done some vent sexing on a previous hatch when they were about 6-7 weeks old with some success (although I was wrong on a number of them), but would like to be able to get an idea of the gender of my current grow-outs at 4 weeks old., so that I can separate the males into bachelor housing and more easily integrate the hens into the main flock in our quail tractor (we have our quail on the ground). Is 4 weeks old a bit soon? They are 3 weeks old now.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, 4 weeks is a little soon to vent sex. Although, I know of a couple folks who can do it. Six weeks is much easier as some of the males start becoming sexually mature.

      In the winter months the males will produce little or no foam unless you have artificial light to extend the daylight hours.
