I actually prefer this ending to the original story. Just watched it last night ahead of this video to get a good idea of my personal thoughts since it’d been a while, but I really do think this was a well done storyline, aside from the bartender being all buddy buddy lol.

I’ve never seen Execution, but to be honest I don’t think this is a must-see episode. Your synopsis, in this case, was sufficient enough for me.
By the way, I’m totally on board (no pun intended... you know... cuz S.S. Minnow) for a Twilight Zone meets Gilligan’s Island FanScription!

That's a thought. Personally I always thought that Caswell, who like any bully had mostly attacked the weak, being killed in a fight by someone smaller than him was poetic. But some other connection between Caswell and the thief could have been a good idea for a twist.

My favourite part of the episode is the line at the beginning: "Mr. Joe Caswell, who, when the good Lord passed out a conscience, a heart, a feeling for fellow men, must have been out for a beer and missed out."

  • @Galantski

The combination of Albert Salmi's acting, and some of the lines written for him really bring the detestable Joe Caswell vividly to life for me. He makes the episode hold up despite the weaknesses mentioned in the video. One of my favorite parts of the script is the exchange he has at the beginning with the father of a young man he gunned down. The father corrects him by saying it wasn't a gunfight, but that his son was shot in the back and he hopes the hanging will take a while: the longer it takes, the more justice served.
Remorseless scum that he is, Caswell replies sardonically, "Well, I'll do a jig for you, pappy, just like a puppet." Salmi delivers that with such contemptuous conviction that the viewer wants to be the one to slap the horse and get him dangling. The other really memorable lines are when he's lecturing the professor on what life's like out in the wilderness, where the only law is the law of survival. So chilling, and delivered accordingly.
One quibble I have is that Joe Caswell is clean shaven. Was it customary to give the condemned a shave before heading to the hanging tree? Stubble seems more likely. But a very good, if not great, episode nonetheless.

Out of all the time travel stories in the first season of Twilight Zone "Execution" remains one of my favorites. Namely because of the consequences that come from it. For the Professor, he learns too late that some people are meant to stay in the past. For Joe Casswell, the man who he wronged in the 1880s, gets his wish granted to him by letting his son's murderer's suffering "take a while" by having him sent to the future and letting him die there while a modern criminal is sent back to hang in his place.

Uk digital channel; Legend, started airing the show this year. This episode was broadcast on a Monday at 20:30. And yet, even at that time slot, they deemed the sequence of Caswell having the curtain cord wrapped around his neck and then strangled with it too violent, and completely cut it. Making it very confusing of what happened to him, all because everybody is too sensitive.

A very good look at the episode. I thought Salmi was excellent.
I disagree with the review on two points: 1) I like the new ending! Really spooks the hell out of the 1880 crowd. (And it shows that TV crooks always wore sports coats.) 2) I agree with Marc Zicree (I think it was), who wrote that the choking of Salmi was way too easy and too fast. They should have re-shot that bit.
Giving props to the stunt men - that was classy. Nicely done!
By the way, the hold-up man showed up later in a tiny role in the Peter Sellers film “Bring There.”

I can certainly agree that the affable timidity of the bartender and some narrative decisions render Execution a bit tepid in comparison to the multitude of profound and memorable episodes of The Twilight Zone. However, in addition to the general performances and established grim, frantic atmosphere, there are some intriguing conversations pertaining to the dispensation and definition of justice that can be precipitated from the events and overall construction of this episode. Caswell is portrayed as an indubitable villain with a propensity for violence and murder, yet, his confrontation with the professor yields some recognition as to the situational contributors to his behaviors, namely the necessity of employing recklessness and brutality in order to survive in a time when lawlessness, theft, and murder were pervasive. He rails against the judgement that the professor imparts upon him, vociferously arguing that standards of justice in a period of comparable peace, affluence, and stability are inapplicable to the era of the west when a paucity of resources and safety beget violence. Though Caswell vehemently kills the innocent professor, thus solidifying his characterization as a truculent, impulsive individual and compromising the defensibility of his claims of circumstances or “nurture” being the sole attributors of his actions, the potency of his statements appertaining to the nature of justice and the complex source of criminality remain.
With regards to the seemingly random introduction of the modern-day thief, I do think it’s possible to derive some thematic reasons for his existence within the narrative. Paul Johnson kills a murderer by strangulation about the neck, which is precisely the intention and method of obtaining justice that the law of 1880 was about to dispense. Therefore, his actions could be considered fate, or some strange vigilantism ridding the world of an unstable killer, which results in him receiving the execution intended for Caswell. In a sense, Johnson obfuscates the delineation between murder and lawful execution, inspiring a discussion about the righteousness or justice of killing for the purpose of eliminating a destructive person. Still, from a pacing perspective, Johnson’s appearance was interruptive to the flow of the narrative and removes focus from Caswell’s experiences in the “present” day.
Thank you, Walter, for inspiring such fascinating discussions with your detailed and entertaining analyses!

I hate the idea of remakes or rebooting an old story, but this episode needs one to make it better. Why would the professor tell this ignorant moron that he's being sent back knowing that Caswell is a violent murderer? He should have tricked him back into the booth by lying to him that he will send him to his time as a millionaire? All of the flaws in this episode overpowered what could be a great story!

I agree that the scene that made the least sense was the bar scene. I would think the bartender would have called the police after the thief destroyed the jukebox, but he waited until the TV got shot at.

Not my favorite episodes. They did others about executions like Dust and I Am the Night, Color Me Black that are better.
Though I like seeing a young Russell Johnston in a pre-Professor role. I also liked him in Back There.
Frightening Fact: Ironically, Salmi himself got involved in a violent crime. He killed his wife during a violent argument (they were in the middle of a divorce) and then himself.

On April 23, 1990, Albert Salmi and his estranged wife Roberta were found dead in their Spokane home by a friend who stopped by to check on her. According to newspaper accounts, Salmi fatally shot Roberta in the kitchen of her home, before shooting himself in an upstairs room
