Damn
Abid Hassan the human brain is a complete mystery.

@@macwatson7227 No, we know quite a lot about it but yes, still plenty to learn.
This isn't something like being carsick or afraid of the dark. You see what your screen emits. The most deep understanding of this can't help you see it differently.
I heard this glitch was patched just an hour ago.
I can tell someones gonna be r/woooshed

dude ur so dumb. This isnt a video game this is real life and there are no glitches in real life and thus they cant be patched. Therefore u are stupid.

Is it just me or anyone else sees the car wheel effect irl all the time?
Probably time you upgrade your eyes to 244 hz
@@denno445 hahha ikr
Yes.. Mostly on wheels with more spokes.. Surprised me they said you need a camera to see it.
BasicallyEverything yep I see it all the time
Yes. I was fascinated with this effect as a little kid. Used to watch car wheels all the time.
"your brain is locked in silence and darkness"
Well ok then, that's what I'm thinking about the rest of the day
Yes but it can sense duration of time. It fires synapse into thoughts and processes that into a string of thoughts. That basically means you're thinking and therefore it can count out time without visual or audio input. I've been debating pressure. You can feel pressure like you can't tell if you're in water or like your bowels are gurgling.
Don't worry the devs are still working on patching that bug.
TheKrackenX42 STILL?

or hired Zach King to edit this video
they thought we would fell for that, like cameras are a real thing lol
Captain Disillusion is way better than Zach King. Look him up.
Zach king is a mediocre vfx artist that got lucky and became famous.

So through the whole video I was asking myself what frame rate our brain would see things at and when you did the moving dot experament that individuals see changing at different speeds gave me a whole new appreciation for our brains constantly attempting to piece what our senses are telling us every moment...Wow...What a beautiful thing it is!
Pressed "like'" specifically for the terrible acting in the first Skype conversation. Love this series, but man that was bad in the best way haha
10:00 for me it just looks like it is speeding up then slowing down but always rotating clockwise
The black dots just kept disappearing for me. For brief moments it just looked like a white cylinder.
Thats because Annabeth, youre already a leftist and Trey, youre racist. xD
Uh oh, here comes the hatemail! lol
Me too
That's because you (and me) can't stop noticing the whole assembly rotating in one direction. The slight tear/wrinkle near the top of the paper and the bends in the turntable base are all obviously rotating right to left.
I can kinda control it wheter its going clock wise or counter clockwise. And it speeds up slow down, speeds up slow down again and again

With the wheel I was kinda hoping/expecting you guys to do a version that breaks the illussion by putting something like colored stickers on the nuts and/or spokes.

The spinning drum in the mirror was trippy!! I saw the two drums alternating directions.
not just the bolts but the inner part of the wheel where the nozzle to fill air is, that is also moving. soooo cool.

Thank you! This is the first time I've seen a proper explanation of the wagon wheel illusion.
Nice demonstration and explanation of a few great visual illusions. There are dozens of varieties of visual illusions. And, if I hadn't actually seen it, I wouldn't have believed it. Or, if I hadn't actually believed it, I wouldn't have seen it!

When you showed the wheel of the car moving like that it reminded of when I played with bayblades and when it's spinning so fast and when the light on it sometimes it would look as if it would change spin cycles of the way it was going. Really fun vid
I used to have a variable strobe light, so I've done some of this stuff. It's awesome!

I need a “Why Your Brain Has NEVER ONCE Thought Water is Spiraling” video.
The thing is, I see the car wheel illusion very much the same way in person. When they were showing the disc at the end, I never saw it reverse direction at the same speed, but I did pick up some very slow backward motion, the same as I do nearly always with moving car wheels under broad daylight. The only difference is that the moving car wheels under daylight aren't quite so discrete as shown here, but rather a moving blur.
11:40, uh my brain does that... both dots go the other direction for a few seconds...
The speed/velocity of the frame rate of the camera and the speed/velocity of the water or wheel are captured and compared.
I unfocused my eyes on that spot test and it flipped every two seconds. It looked like it spun back and forth.
We had a group project in physics class at university and one of the groups did this with a speaker, a water hose and a strobe light. It’s pretty fun to experiment with.
9:24 when I stare at the dot, the circles disappear, and I just see a spinning, white cylinder
Could have also talked about the apparent motions of planets in the sky! Astronomers deal with long base strobe effect lol
Interesting, time to open a new tab.
is it just me or does this “almost impossible” guy have the best job in the world
11:45
It was inconsistent and I had to be looking for it.
But at times I saw both drums' circles vibrating quickly back and forth _without_ spinning.
The wagon wheel illusion was one of my mystery of all my life. thank you to explain that to me.
on a side note everyone should read david eagleman's book Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain, its very good
when i saw the circle illusion it was continuosly changing back and forth
Me too. I’m left handed and I wonder if that plays a part in how I perceive it...?
With the spinning dot I found that moving my head but keeping my eyes on the dot shifted the direction.
I am curious to see this applied to a sprinkler or a firehose, etc. to see the results. Could it provide a better effect for a better tool?
6:25 The spokes appear stationary, The bolts are moving in reverse direction & the logo is moving in forward direction
*MIND = BLOWN.!!!*
Valve stem appears to moving backward at a different rate than the others
My eyes have wildly different prescriptions, so the dot thing only worked when my glasses were on.
7:13 I need one of those strobing what-nots in my life.
In the spinning dot illusion, I found that I could make the dots switch their rotation by looking just slightly to the left or right side of the white focus dot.
world minor update, patch 24: remove wheel
This is the same like those helicopter blades not moving vids!
Back in the 70's I used to go to the National Geographic in Washington, D.C. My favorite thing there was the water hose with the adjustable strobe light. Always fascinating, especially when you're 10 years old.
Did you notice the VALVE STEM in sequential locations around the rim while the spokes were seeming to be stationary?
I was just about to comment asking about the theoretical frame rate of my brain when Robbie asked it for me. Thanks Robbie and David.
When? And what's the answer?
10:14 Our brains do not simply have a fluctuating frame rate. Instead our brain is trying to figure out whether or not something is moving left or right and fights over that fact. If our minds had a frame rate the mirror example would show the device spinning in opposite directions at all times. But because it's simply a matter of is it going left or right we see them both go in the same direction because our brain wants to think that they're both going in the same direction.
CAPTAIN DISILLUSION
taemed 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
I think he's called Mysterio
In the car wheel illusion the spikes were 'going' backwards, forwards or staying still based on the speed. The lug nuts were 'going' backwards, it seemed to me, all of the time. BUT, did you notice the middle cap inside the lug nuts was 'going' forward, as well? That is so cool!
Thanks for sharing!
God Bless!
6:35 so the rim is still, the bolts go backwards, and the toyota logo goes forwards in this shot. thats awesome
That wheel rotating illusion always used to mess with my mind. Well now I know.
That's how they did the "god" rain in Now You See Me 2, used strong strobe lights on the building roofs
The "apparent motion" at 3:30 is due to temporal aliasing which arises due to under-sampling of the signal (or data). This is one of the basic ideas in signal processing. It is for the same reason helicopter blades, ceiling fan blades, car wheels appear to move at a slower speed, sometimes even in the opposite direction.
What might be interesting, is if you can capture a video at frame rate much higher and then post select the frames that would correspond to for instance water travelling up, travelling down or standing still
wagon wheel effect... kind of like when you follow a ceiling fan with your eyes and sometimes you can catch a blade
or when you watch the ceiling fan and it starts going the other way
I don't know what they're talking about but this water bending is very satisfying
Wait i didnt know saitama could water bend.. Where tf did u go man
Im limit less it took me like 5 mins to learn it
For the Necker Cube though, it's possible to try switching which top/bottom angle is protruding consciously. Or at least for me.
This thing also happens with the ceiling fan in dark room, you try focussing a fluctuating light on the fan. Clockwise and anticlockwise rotations can be seen.
Captain Disillusion did a fascinating video about this! :)
My family must be an illusion haven’t seen them In a long time
Dude , i was at the house and you left the fuckin toaster on, thats why we dont wanna see u
05:18 "right here i'm doing a really bad job of driving"
and I thought he was going to hit the car in front of him
I used vids of this phenomenon during my Science classes when we studied different types of waves, and resonance. There's lots of vids of this being done.
I can force my brain to see each different set of possible ways the last illusion could be, am I an alien
I thought this was Obama when I looked at the thumbnail
Same!!!!
Khanyisile Kambule illusion o. O
Spooder- Man same
Thought they finally made a black elf🤗
Wagon wheel effect Rolls Royce: What’s that
Would've been cool to look at the wheel turning but colour each volt differently. Maybe different hues or different shades of the same hue. Then you could check how much hue/shade differences affect the effect
The camera shows the illusion, it is not our brain that makes it stand still or goes up but the camera. In this situation the camera is the eye and the brain that shows us the elusion.
don't tell me my brain makes the elusion in this situastion... it's the camera displaying the elusion
Completely agree. All our brains are doing is stringing together the pictures shown. It doesn't just look like they are moving backwards, they literally are with the pictures shown to us due to the cameras frame rate, which is why they have to use the phone's cameras to see in person. Nobody seems to be doing their own critical thinking though.
Exactly what I was thinking too
eh
Who else could control the direction of the spinning wheel with their mind.
Me but only when it was just the dots in frame. When he was in frame as well it stopped working for me. It also seems faster when it's the only thing kn frame.
When staring the dot with the black and white wheels if i just think "right" or "left" the wheel goes to that direction. Its same when looking the dot with mirror, if i think forward they spin forward and so on :D and you can swap the directions by just thinking the direction any time.
When I was at collage learning about electrics and mechanics we were taught that the workshop had to run the lighting on 3 phase electric because the fluorescent lighting flickers and that if the rate of flicker matches the rpm of any machine parts they would appear to be still, the 3 phase works because the lighting would flicker at different rates and prevent this effect.
Anybody else try slowing the speed down, to no effect?
You're playing the same frames just with bigger gaps between them. Ain't gonna change anything
captain disillusion outsold
The mirror test was neat. Sometimes it looked like they were spinning in the same direction, sometimes opposite.
that makes sense why i saw the fan go backwards. theres a video of a very fast spinning fan and before it started acceleration faster it looked like it went backwards
Plot twist: he's actually Poseidon and the "scientist" is his son
Reality can be so silly sometimes.
I can watch either directions of the spinning circles on demand, just by slightly changing the place I'm looking at or by thinking. But what I'd like to know is why we can see individual drops when looking a stream form above. It's easier to find this phenomenon at the shower.
Awesome video and great guest!! :) love his enthusiasm!
Thanks, WIRED, for telling me that the frames in a video, when put together, make a video
QQ: doesn’t this also happen with a fidget spinner?
Yeah
What if you color half the bolts or draw something not symmetrical on the wheel?
The black dot started flipping like mad right away, and yeh, only for a second or two each direction, but never in any specific repeated timing.
Narrator: Try not to blink
Me: Blink
You can do the wagon wheel effect with a fan by quickly blinking and it looks like the fan isn’t moving
On the wheel illusion if I squint it spins faster and if I widen my eyes it goes slower
Same happens when you see a little bit tilted shadow of a sealing fan on wall moving slowly and if you thinks its moving in right direction then it moves in right and if you think it's moving in left then it really start moving left....
