      Hi. Do you have a good recommendation in SF to do service and maintenance on my 2008 fortwo? That is reasonable? Mercedes dealer in SSF is way too expensive. Thanks!

    • @ColinLeung
      @ColinLeung  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ap682 I performed all of the maintenance myself when I owned the car, so I don't have any recommendations. Sorry. I would check yelp or google for smart repair centers with good reviews.

    Honest shops will only charge you $40 to change the oil in the smart 451, since it only uses 3.5 quarts of oil. One shop quoted me $80 then decided to charge me $40 since they knew it didn't take much oil, other shops enjoyed taking me for the full $80. I changed mine myself today for $30 (5 quarts oil, filter), and I have still have about 3 quarts left over from the new 5 QT jug I bought today ( I still had fresh oil leftover in the last jug I bought).

      really my sister use to take hers to the dealer they charged her $125.00 then they went to $175.00 So she took it to a local well known shop and they still charged her $97.00 so I started changing her oil for $40.00

      Not true, 3.5 qts only fills it dry. Run the car for a few minutes and it will be .5 qts lower. I've changed my Smart's oil for years and it's religiously 4 qts everytime.

    honestly you should always prefill the oil filter so you are not dry starting the vehicle -- tip from my grandfather and father god bless their souls in heaven.

    This car is oddly convenient to work on. The previous owner of mine even left a "tnt detonator style" bike pump that I use to air up my tires.

    Do you need a washer for the drain plug? Thx

    • @ColinLeung
      @ColinLeung  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My car did not have one, and it did not leak. You may be able to reuse yours if you have one, and it's in good condition. I did a quick google search and I see replacement drain plugs with washers/gasket, or you can buy it separately. www.autohausaz.com/pn/0189974445

    Be careful tightening the oil drain plug. It's steel and the pan is aluminum. The pan threads strip eventually if you continually over tighten. If it happens you can buy a drain bolt made for a dodge Truck ( I forget the specifics, auto parts store can find it by the OEM bolt measurements. The truck bolt is the same thread pattern but goes in further and engages past the stripped threads. The oil pan has more threads than the OEM bolt engages. Don't know why, but a new bolt that has more threads is better than buying a new pan. These cars aren't made any more so parts are hard to find sometimes.
    Also, getting to the air filter lid release that is right under the intake tube in the center of the box is hard to get to. The two outer ones are easy.

      You're welcome ! It's easy to strip out the aluminum pan with a steel bolt.

    I only hand tighten the drain plug then tighten with the socket or wrench until I can't loosen it by hand, no reason to torque it down, because it will take a lot to break it loose when you go to loosen it again come oil change time.

    Great tutorial! We recently got a 2011 Smart Fortwo. Have you ever tried a topside manual oil change? I'm trying to decide which way to do it.

    • @ColinLeung
      @ColinLeung  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never heard of that method. How does that work? Do you use a pump? I've always done the gravity one from the bottom.
