      Hello. I had this surgery almost 2 weeks ago. I had skin tags ant 1 degree h.. After few days I got blood cloth and huge painful external hemorrhoid which I never had before. Went to my doctor, he said its not his fault.. :( and probably I will need to have it done again. I'm a huge fitness and weight lifting fan. I assume I can forget about exercising?

    Man the stool softener days before should be standard! I got very little direction coaching or advise. Haven’t told me what to eat/not to eat. Fortunately I’m familiar with fasting so I fasted 48hr before and now I’m on day 4 of recovery. I ate after 24hrs because of peer pressure but I’m holding out. Tea with honey only lots of water. And rest. Warm water. Physicians should be more caring and engaged with their patients before and after surgery

      @@ankitasaxena3935 So I had my surgery January 4th and it’s February 22nd. Went home same day. Pain levels were managed with Tylenol and prescription pain meds (no ibuprofen because I cannot have ibuprofen however if you are allowed it then typically you would take this too). I also was prescribed a small amount of Valium. The first week pain was very high and I was not skipping any pain meds even though I was taking as little of the strong pain medications as possible. I think I am about fully recovered now and was supposed to have a checkup however we had a snowstorm that day so was rescheduled to go in for my checkup in March. Hopefully the surgeon will say everything looks good but it was definitely the most painful recovery I have ever had. I would recommend sleeping as much as possible the first week and walking around very carefully in your home while you are awake as walking helps. If you try not to take pain medication you will suffer way too much so keep on top of it and do not miss any times at least the first week. If I had to do it again I think I could but it’s something I hope I don’t have to experience again. You will be taking lots of showers and hot sitz baths afterwards which will help a ton for the first two week at least.

    Love your videos, they help so much and bring peace of mind (priceless!). Thank you truly. ❤
    As for my experience - I’m 2 weeks after surgery and still a bit in pain. The first week I experienced really, really strong pain. Even stronger the my birth pain (right after surgery). I suffered a lot. 3 shots of Morphine was the only way to deal with it once the anesthesia faded. I guess my case was / is especially complex as I’m 39 weeks pregnant - accordingly my pain management was not as open. And I really wanted to keep my body as “clean as possible” from drugs.. Though there is as Dr Chung mentioned a very important point here - the Pain Management post hospital is KEY with the surgent. In the end I had to leverage the pros and cons, especially if you’re pregnant - Baby doesnt benefit from Mami being and going through pain for so long. Relaxed Mami = Happy baby ;-)

I was continuously told how my hemms were not that big and shouldnt be causing an issue but the longterm psychological effects of constantly feeling like you are about to poop, fear that you might poop without control, leaking, prolapsing, sore for days, dreading the next BM. ALL of this should be taken into account when seeing someone about them, yes the recovery i hear and see in the FB groups is terrible for many, some breeze through it but a quality of life that is so bad that you dont socialise, you fear aggrevating your hemms with doing anything, even just pooping is a far greater suffering in my book. @@ankitasaxena3935 yes I got it done. It was harder than giving birth unmedicated for my 3 children. I was not given what he suggested before surgery because the hospital doesn’t use it. My stitches never dissolved and my surgeon put the node where my checks meets and was very uncomfortable to walk. It took me 3 months to be able to sit. 5 months in total to take a good breath. I’m now 1 year post surgery and it’s back to 50% before surgery. I was on a lot of ibuprofen which ended up damaging my kidneys. To be completely honest I felt like I was violated from my behind all 3 months until my skin healed. Before heading to surgery get to really understand your body. I now finally learned to stop clenching my cheeks and relax my sphincter which was a game changer and to let my bowel movements out without a huge push. The best compound medicine to get me though the throbbing was nitroglycerin

    Thank you, Dr. Chung. I've watched many of your videos and find them very helpful. It's been almost six weeks since my hemorrhoidectomy and i'm still feeling extreme pain with multiple small bowel movements a day and a constant feeling of needing to poop. I've listened to my surgeon's advice. I used lactulose for a few weeks, but that seemed to cause really soft poops. Then my surgeon suggested metamucil and more fiber. Since upping my fiber, I've been pooping about 15 times a day and I'm so upset and frustrated because it feels worse than the week or two before. My surgeon checked my bum and said it looks like things are healing well, which is great, but that isn't helping with the pain I constantly feel. My poops aren't hard, but they're small and come on with urgency. It's made it almost impossible for me to go anywhere or do much because I always need to poop. And the last few days it's also been harder to pee, which is a new annoying problem. I've now cut back on the fiber the last few days because it seems like that made things worse. I just want to know how to get rid of the nonstop urge to poop, which is so uncomfortable and also how do I get back to a normal poop? I try controlled breathing while I'm on the toilet. I try to think positively, but at six weeks being in so much pain still, I'm having a hard time staying positive. I welcome any advice you have.

    Awesome advice Dr Chung.
    Just spreading some extra positivity 😅…Im 6 days post op and personally found the pain bearable, even the first bm was surprisingly okay. First two days after surgery i was given strong pain killers and after that it was okay, just taking some panadol whenever needed. @@gtsprite I still have a bit puffyness around the edges but my surgeon said itll fade away with time. i do have a lot of pressure inside though, due to muscles being very tight due to trauma, so im still under laxatives 2 times a day, with expectation to stop in about 3 months. im using a cream to make the muscles looser so i wont be at risk of a fissure, started using it about 2 weeks ago and will use it for 6 more. aside from that, the pain is at like, 0.5-0 depending if i had to go or not, buti still sit or lay down after a bowel movement so to not harm the process. i will say this though, KEEP YOUR STOOL SOFT no matter what. i had stopped taking my laxatives for a few days some time ago and had to go to the hospital due to my stool not coming out of the thin "exit". they gave me something gross to drink but i couldnt drink it all since it was too gross, and asked for an enema, which unplugged me in matter of minutes. the real awful part was the need to go poo while not being physically able to, which caused me to get into a severe panic attack and thats why we called the ambulance. things get better but keep yourself in check and dont be lazy when healing. the things they say about people healing in about 2 weeks is bogus. thats like the minimum amount of time it takes. it can take as much as 4 months easily.

    I am currently six days from being for weeks post-surgery. Overall my experience was not really that bad. The first day and a half I felt zero pain. Without a doubt it was that numbing medication from the surgeon you spoke of. I was prescribed medication and I stayed on top of it from day one. Day 5 was the first day I did not take any medication. Two reasons one there really wasn't any pain and the second was I still hadn't had a bowel movement. I was a bit concerned but didn't think much of it because I was on a strict liquid diet that I put myself on. It wasn't until day 7 I was in so much pain in my stomach because obviously no bowel movement but rest assured I did that. It was tough and I wish I would have taken better measures. I was in good pain for the rest of the day but opted out of medication because I didn't want the narcotics. He pain did subside later that day and was just fine. The amount of blood while having a bowel movement is crazy and for some can be a bit scary. I did expect it as I had quite a few stitches also my doctor had mentioned it to me. As time moves on it does get better. The first two weeks I was on a light fiber. After that I was on my regular high-fiber diet. As I said everything does get better. The one thing you did not mention in your video is how long to expect any type of drainage from the anus after the surgery. Given the fact it will be different from person to person possibly from them having their hemorrhoid banded, lasered or cut off needing stitches afterwards. As well as their personal healing time frame. I felt that would have been a good note to have put in the video. Anyways that is some of my story I wanted to share. You seem to be a very passionate Doctor who actually cares about his patients well-being after surgery. This is good and I wish more doctors were this way.

    Damn I wish you were my surgeon! I just had a thrombosed hemorrhoid removed yesterday and just had my first poop late today. You are 100% spot on about the "bump" in pain! I wish my surgeon had told me to take stool softeners starting as early as possible. I also may have mess up because I have been taking benefiber since day of. I think your right, a low fiber diet along with the stool softeners and light meals make more sense to me after having almost fallen off the toilet in agony (I also have a grade 3 internal that has to be pushed back in ☠️).
    I didn't have any choice really in my surgeon, as I have government insurance which in my area (NEPA) automatically means you get a hack job with a dirty look no matter what! At least my surgeon had SOME bedside manner but when the time came he just went to town with a pair of scissors and cauterized what felt like my entire asshole, then I was pushed out the door with a paper telling me to take ibuprofen + acetaminophen. It's now the end of day 2 and I hope I don't wake up tomorrow it hurts so bad! Thank you so much for the great information tho!
    Also, I want to slap you for making me stomach laugh at the "the anus is hating it's life right now" quote! You hurt me man 😂

I do have some other stuff going on down there that could be contributing but there is STILL a hole/open wound where it was cut out! Hang in there if you're still going through it! Candy, I was like you, putting it off. The only reason I had it done. Was due to leaking, even when I urinated. I nearly passed out due to becoming anemic from bleeding. I was 6.5 and needed two units of blood in a blood transfusion. So, I had no choice. I was in the hospital for two days. They scheduled my surgery. My colorectal doc. Was horrible. I would have much preferred this doctor. His bedside manner and explanation of things is reassuring. My surgeon was nowhere near this detailed.

They have me hydros and lidocaine cream and Mira lax and stool softener and anti nausea. No antibiotics so I’m concerned about infection. I wish I had some of these options I felt like I had to poop same day and i was so scared. The packing came out. Lots of pressure on the site and very painful. Pain has subsided with meds. I had the surgery 11/13/23, best advice I got was to stay on a liquid diet for the first 12 days and boy did that help. The pain was so bad reminded me of the 2 c-sections I had, but the surgery was soooo worth it. I took my meds as instructed and I was constantly walking. For me it hurt worst when I laid down so I was always up walking. By the 12th day things got a whole lot better for me. For those contemplating, the pain is horrible, but my quality of life is so much better now.

    Dr. Chung, I was planning to have my hemorrhoidectomy after a month. Although I am afraid of the pain after, my surgeon told me they will use a harmonic scalpel, which they said will be less painful. What are your opinions about this tool? How will it be less painful? Hopefully you'll make a video about this, as well as other tools, such as electric knife that can make hemorrhoidectomy less painful, based on what I've researched. Thank you!

    • @yourfriendlyproctologist
      @yourfriendlyproctologist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, I'm familiar with the Harmonic scalpel. Studies have shown less pain with good results. Long term results comparing traditional hemorrhoidectomy and Harmonic are not well defined. Personally, I find the Harmonic does not do as well of a job completely removing the larger hemorrhoid cushions and so I no longer use this technology. There is concern with more bleeding using the Harmonic. In the end, it will depend on a thoughtful discussion between you and your surgeon. Best to you!

    I am a 50 y/o male who has had this surgery recently. Women can no longer hang child birth pain over me. I have been there for 6 hours of labor the 2nd day after surgery. I describe it as try to push your first stool akin to pushing a basketball thru the eye of a needle. And if you’re impatient like I was after 48 hours I took a laxative as recommended by my doctor. After my surgery my surgeon was adamant I eat and eat and eat. No need to tell me twice. I had so much kaka backed up behind the basketball something had to give. I remember thinking of cuttin myself a new ahole to bypass my old defunct pooper. I could no longer sit after 6 hours. I was standing astride the toilet and with an ungodly scream I gave birth to a 20 pound bori, that only half landed in the bowl. Bugger. It was sooo much and I was so relieved I was amazed I had the presence of mind to grab my phone and take fotos 😅

      Many women will suffer through hours upon hours of painful childbirth only to have the baby rip them from their vagina down to their asshole meaning they get stitches in BOTH holes along with the initial pain of pushing the baby out AND along with the pain that comes with having a hole inside their womb from where the baby was that will also cause pain. I get what you're saying.The surgery was painful. Shitting with stitches in your ass was painful. But women can very much still hold the pain of child birth over you 🤣 as a women, I'd 100% have hemorrhoid surgery again over having a baby and being ripped like that.

    Reprat = stomach relaxers? 🤷‍♂️

I do not like taking narcotics and I tried not to take the medication after hemorrhoidectomy ... Well that latest about 24 hours. I understand moving around and walking..But the pain medication makes me very dizzy so I have to sleep it off. Are there any type of leg exercise that I can do while sitting up in bed? ( I am sitting where I am not putting pressure on my bottom) Other questions I have is, how long do you recommend taking stool softeners? How long does the bleeding lasts?
