I was shocked when I started seeing online sportsbook commercials, like how is this legal?, now I just try and ignore it but I usually see at least one ad everyday

Sports betting became legal at the same moment that sports networks started running way more ads during games. It's unavoidable now.

I'm a recovering compulsive gambler (abstinence date 2-17-02) who was an early adaptor of online sports betting. Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine the hellscape that the sports betting landscape would be. My heart goes out to all the people getting engulfed in this horrible addiction.

Protecting addicts and young people (who are being advertised to for years as impressionable minors) from companies designed to extract as much money as possible from them is absolutely worth inconveniencing people who casually gamble. Sports gambling remaining legal in casinos but banned via phone allows adults to partake while removing the predatory element of being literally ever-present for someone who needs to stay away. Losing thousands of dollars to sports gambling should never be just a download away.@@eliw6607

29 year old here, sports gambling with fanduel and draftkings has ruined the first 5 years of my live post graduation. Online sports gaming scares me to death. And that "dorm room degenerate" guy who claims to be like a "financial advisor"? Shame on him.
I've never had a desire to gamble and never had an issue, but I was married to (and divorced) a person who had a gambling addiction and that was scary. The thought that he can now go on his phone and gamble means he has no chance of overcoming his addiction. It's just too easy to place bets. One thing I HATE is that celebrities are now promoting sports betting online--shame on them!

The perfect storm of young males being stimulated and manipulated, first by sports culture ( the NFL having attained the the largest percent of all televised content ), and then by their cultural tendencies of overconfidence, peer pressure, the most basic human impulse of gambling, then being susceptible to the machinery of easy and legal online betting platform that preys on these tendencies.

I do not gamble, but have many friends that do. With the high cost of living, career disapointment and overall debt that young people are in, I think overspending on stuff like this is going to be a ticking time bomb. Obviously people can spend their money on what they want, but those quick dopamine hits can become really tough to walk away from. I'm not sure what the fix is going to be, but curious to see what is going to happen in the next ten years.

This is like the online poker boom. The big difference is with poker you can actually work to get better at the game and beat other people. With sports betting you are up against the house, and if you get good enough they will limit your action.

Gambling should be taught in schools. Not how to win but the psychological tricks casinos use to make you carry on betting. While as for sports betting they should be taught why exactly it’s so hard to profit from long term and why simply having a lot of sports knowledge isn’t enough.
Aside from that I wish gamblers were more aware that long term markets aren’t addictive.

Looking at the way things are with gambling and marketing industries,TikTok, disinformation and verbatage on the television and internet. I've come to think basic human psychology should be a mandatory lesson because it's been used against us everywhere, everyday even the designs of our buildings and cities are to manipulate us psychologically but most people haven't got any understanding of Human behaviour and we're growing up in a world that tells us we're rational thinking machines with an integral uniqueness that means they are of, but distinct from Humanity, when we're more like emotional reaction machines with a shared set of standard operating apis.

Legalized sports betting is more dangerous than legalized prostitution. Sports betting is the most dangerous “sin” activity that has been legalized. Sports betting is far more dangerous and addictive than, say, legalized marijuana. In five to ten years, once governments have become accustomed to pot and gambling income, what will be next? It probably won’t be prostitution because that’s a highly personalized service big corporations can’t sink their talons into.

Sorry to say but our governments, state and national are not your friend. They pitched this disaster as a revenue generating ploy. The truth is, is to reclaim the money that’s given to individuals that are on social assistance and social security. That means the gambler in those circumstances on average will lose at least half of the income from the government. It also applies to all in general, makes you poor and indebted for ever.

It’s possible that he made 500k but how much did he lose betting? Dude is most likely in the negative that’s the whole point of sports betting. Win 500k but spent 600k on bets. So your really 100k in the negative… that’s the whole point it makes you feel good when you win so you can keep on trying to get that high again when in reality your in the negative

It's possible he did win that. When you're so far into a gambling mindset it can be hard to spend money on anything not strictly necessary because you can begin to view money as merely tokens for future gambling. I've been there although the big wins I sometimes managed were not in the same league, but still very good money. It all got ploughed back into more gambling.

I won’t say I disagree, there is an addictive element to it however, we’re hearing from people taking major losses. I doubt people who are winning are complaining about it being addictive.

But the problem is you don’t win all the time. That’s why these companies are in the business.

@@leonmeyers7009 True but isn’t the point of a good business to make money? I get it, I’ve lost hella money gambling and it sucks to lose but you know the risk going into it. Just seems kinda unfair to place the blame on the gambling industry for people being irresponsible.

What makes gambling addicts look even worse is when they blame it on the casino or sports book and not themselves.

Apps make it acceptable and there's no friction at all. You can micro-bet with apps, as in bet on individual plays within a game. Its so accessible that if you have a smart phone, you are never more than a minute away from placing a bet.

Showing this tout selling his picks is irresponsible journalism. He's nothing more than a scam artist.
