  • Hello Friends and welcome to another art studio vlog.
    Let's make cold wax medium! Making Cold Wax Medium is easier than you might think, with only a few ingredients required. Cold wax medium differs from Encaustic medium although both beeswax based, they are used very differently. Cold wax medium is used as a paste-type consistency and added to oil paint or used as a varnish. I'll be sharing the paintings I make with the cold wax medium in future art studio vlogs.
    The recipe
    11oz bleached beeswax
    11oz solvent (Gamsol or Equivilent)
    1oz Damar Resin
    It makes just under 1 litre of cold wax medium
    The ratios of this cold wax medium recipe can be altered depending on if you prefer a softer or firmer medium.
    Please note. Damar resin fumes are toxic. Use a low heat to melt the resin being careful it doesn’t smoke. It is always good practice to work in a well ventilated room.
    Hope you enjoy :-)

    I was taught at university to make my cold wax. First of all we strained our damar crystals in an old stocking in a jar with the solvent to rid the resulting damar varnish of the tree debris. which is exactly the same as the purchased damar you are showing. It is very dangerous to the lungs to be breathing in the wax and damar varnish as you are teaching here. The fumes from the mixture of the damar (home made varnish or bought ) with the solvent and wax are best controlled in a lidded jar placed in a double boiler. There is no need to stand over breathing in the fumes, stirring continuously. In a tight lidded jar you can shake boil and cool in the same process and then the cold wax is already in its receptacle and clean.

      Hi Dawn. Thanks for your comment. Yes damar resin fumes are toxic. As long as you don’t heat the resin too high it will not “smoke” (emit fumes) making it safe to stand over. Of course working in a well ventilated room is good practice

    I mix mine outdoors, using an old electric frying pan....much safer than indoors, and whip the mix with an old whisk to cool down quicker, then seal in jars with lids.

    Thank you for the demo. I jsut discovered cold wax process. I have been doing encaustics for a short while and am going to add this to my techniques. Being price conscious I appreciate your ideas.

    Thank you for the recipe; Note that the same weight measure of different substances is not 1:1 ratio though. Glad you lifted up your scale. :)

      It happened that I am in Mexico country side; relatively close to Popocatepetl volcano 🌋 ( Morelos State) and…I am bored with my flat-flat-flat paintings😑.
      Curiously, as you do, I have all the ingredients at hand for cold wax especially the procrastination.
      I just have to determine the proper solvent (in Spanish)🤔.
      Your video was very instructive and your energy reminded me a dear friend of mine.
      Also, pre-made cold wax is not available in most (if not all) Art supplies stores; neither encaustic. I wonder why?
      So THANK YOU again and have a nice day/night (?).
      Sincerely
      Cyr Casas😁

    Hello, thank you for this video! I would like to know if I can paint on large linen canvases? And what is the size limit, if any ? thanks Selina

    • @selinawilsonart
      @selinawilsonart  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Dax
      I have used the cold wax as a top layer buffed off to a fine layer with good success but used any thicker than a very fine film on a canvas would not be suitable because of the flexibility of the linen/canvas. Something solid like birch board would be best practice. 😊🌻

    Any chance of using soy wax?

    • @selinawilsonart
      @selinawilsonart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Soy wax is a bit softer than bees wax and I find my oil sticks to be quite soft already. The softness will effect your mark making and chance for thinner lines. Soy also tends to “bloom” (go cloudy) when used as a hot wax (encaustic) so a couple of things there to consider. But hey, give it a go. You could add some damar resin to help harden the mix. Couldn’t say in what ratio as never tried myself. Good luck 😀🎨⭐️🌸

    I wonder what the actual money savings is? Thanks.

      Money savings is not my motivation although it is cheaper. I make a lot of my own art supplies for the joy of it😀🌸
