Here it is! I'm really happy with this one, more than even the first one. Unfortunately, I think I have to take a break from Half-Life for now, as I'm kinda burning out on it and especially these types of videos. I will make more of them in the future I think, just not now. Next week's video will be about Half-Life again, but it's another "One Perfect Enemy"-episode. So, do look forward to that :)
1:35 Corpses fading out is a flag that can be set on any character in the games independent of the German censorship, and Blue Shift has many enemies set to fade out by default as a performance optimization originating from its Dreamcast roots that wasn't changed in the PC version. Regular corpses are also seen disappearing in Half-Life and Opposing Force, but this is primarily relegated to ones appearing in large and open areas that were considered performance intensive for the time.
That makes a lot of sense, yeah. There were still a couple instances where I don't think it made any sense, though (small, cramped corridors where performance optimization is easiest). Also, I'm honored to have you comment on my videos!
yes, but the german version does not fade away a corpse but a living NPC just before it dies. It kind of freezes in the first frame of death and there is no gibbing. In normal half life the actual corpses and gibs fade away after some time, after the animations are done playing, and that is how the flag works, you can check this out in Sven Co-op. This german version is clearly modified from the engine itself since said flag works differently.
I always found the English version of Otis to be kinda endearing. It's like if a midwestern dad was taking you on a fishing trip and then shooting you for 60 damage because an alien was behind you
oh god i absolutely adore german otis, in the scene where he is fighting the vending machine his "hhmmhmhhh schokolade :3" sounds like a child about to dig into a basket of halloween candy.

I think the two soldiers in the Blue Shift Sewer Section aren't just using human voices, but also the human model - meaning that the german version of Blue Shift implies that both robots and humans were send in. With Gordon exclusively encountering the former, Shepard the latter, and Barney primarily the former with overhearing the latter. Hard to tell, but they didn't seem (at first glance) to possess the robot model. The mighty power of noclip could resolve that mystery, of course.
@@GermanPeter Fair's fair. I listened to a Ross Scott interview recently; he said he didn't complete Black Mesa because Half-Life felt like work to him b/c of all his work with Freeman's Mind
You could interpret the robot soldiers as mech suits that can operate independently or be worn by people. Though their model doesn't absolutely accommodate that, it would explain why they sometimes bleed or talk like people and sometimes not.
1:38 The corpses fade out in the american release as well. It's a flag you can apply to any monster(NPC) in the game. I map for Half-Life 1, so I know this for a fact.
Kinda interesting, the reason why they translated "Barnacles" to "Muschelwesen" at 18:50 is probably because they translated the word Barnacle directly. A barnacle is an animal which grows on the underside of boats and other surfaces which are submerged. I guess they didn't bother to just come up with a unique name for the alien in German
Did you notice that no matter what language the character speaks, the facial-rig tries to follow it? And damn it does a pretty job! The Goldsource engine still amazes me to this day!
Couldn´t help but subscribing to your channel - love the Half-Life vids. I recall, back in the day, when Oppsing Force and Blue Shift first hit shelves, the german gaming-magazines being all over Otis. It seems you weren´t the only one rly liking the guy (and his VAs performance in the german version). Another funny fact was the original german disc release of the games. After Valve started Steam, you could register Half-Life, Opposing Force and Blue Shift via the gamecode printed on the manual. Now, if you set Steam to english and downloaded Half-Life - voila - uncut international version of the game.
The reason the soldier mentioned Mech-Units in the transmission in Opposing Force is because it's the same transmission that Gordon receives when designating bomb targets in Surface Tension. The canon is that you're seeing the guy on the other side of the transmission. In the German version they completely bork this because in the original it was a robot saying it with a robot voice, but in op4 they rerecorded it with a human voice (despite it being the same line).

Honestly, i expect that the localization team only got access some of the tools, or rather, they didn't know how to use them, and that's why there is so much inconsistencies between the games. Like, they only knew how to change a texture or a model, but didn't know how to completely replace a map entity, or change the scripting on a sentence. I also would not be surprised if the only reason they went with robots for enemies initially, was because HL1 already had a robot model packaged in. The only real editing work they did was for the animations, and that might have been coordinated with valve themselves, explaining why the expansions didn't get the same kind of tinkering. Or maybe i'm just rambling, anyway, this sounds like a dream project for some small German studio that just really likes Half-Life, who maybe didn't know what kind of deal they were getting into.
Great trip down memory lane! Excited for the eventual Half-Life 2 video. I think the original Half-Life 2 dub was the lowest point of Valve dubs, with the episodes improving ever so slightly. After that the quality took a noticeable step up with Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal 2 being the peak. Just a shame, that the Last Stand Update makes playing L4D2 in languages other than english inconsistent, due to the re-added unused voice lines not having been dubbed.

Would love to see a hl2 video, it can only go up from here. Good stuff by the way keep up the good work
I have a Steam library full of games that would send you to prison. Du wurdest für immer in das Gefängnis Leben.
of course I want to see your video about Half-Life 2
corpses fading away for no reason happened to me in the original version too
Otis in English is amazingly funny though. He's perfect and I will not hear any slander!
Here’s the questions, when are we getting a POSTAL video? Definitely deserves a video from you. I feel it would fit amazingly with this type of format.
9:20 Fühlte mich bei "Stullen" wieder wie zuhause.
i would gladly know more about those german quirks, do make more of these!
Imagine if the Texas line in OPFOR was localized to say bavaria instead
I thank the author so much for providing both English and Gegman subtitles for us. I learned a lot of German words and phrases through this video.
Warten hat sich gelohnt! Ein Video zum Deutschen Half-Life 2 wäre auch nice!
19:32 maybe he meant "mech-units" more like "mechanized infantry" which is actual term in the military? But I can't speak German, so maybe it is a little bit stretch to interpret it like that.
I can't wait for you to cover the differences between German HL2 vs, well, regular HL2. I played a lot more of that game than HL1 and its expansion titles.
I speak just about enough German to get very excited when I can identify the mistakes in the title cards. Genau wie Duolingo!
