Residential schools. Its horrible what they forced those children to do and to endure.

Thousands of my people died in these "residential schools" the kids would be forcefully removed from their loving families at gun point. The ones who tried to escape, usually ended up dying of exposure to the elements. Just goes to show you how horrible these schools really were. They were made to take the native out of the child, wether it be native american or maori. Most of the commonwealth countries have had a very horrible colonization period, and are still dealing with inter-generational trauma issues.
@Truth Willout yes the people who first did this are long dead, but their descendents for generations are not. Nor did these practices stop, or the oppression of brown and black people, or the shameful privileges and benefits allotted to the descendents of the original abusers and colonisers. Colonialism and plantation didn't end. They just expanded.
Ava this is just one aspect out of millions of sad parts of colonialism which brown and black people keep paying through. And its ongoing in various forms and systems.
This is why I speak 3 colonial/western languages, but not one of my mother tongues.
Thanks for shedding a light on this, was wondering what they were trying to escape from. Explained why they were able to speak in perfect English.
Ava Cameron- thank you for sharing insight into this practice. I watched a documentary years back on how this was carried out in austrailia to indigenous people with usually one white parent.
One set of Sisters walked days to freedom. Only to be recaptured some time later. I cried and cried and cried watching such inhumane and evil tactics.

They regularly had sing-alongs with the wild animals all facing one direction like on a stage
I cherish my memories camping as a teen in Culebra Island in PR. We camped alone just a group of 12 and we were from 15 to 17. I had tents and air matress but always slept in the sand. My Dad used to do it when he was a boy and he wanted me to experience it.

They were in a more cooperative age group. And if you ever grow up in a rural, off grid type of community, kids tend to mature earlier and learn survival skills at an early age.

If Kolo Fekitoa was 69 in 2015, and died in 2017 aged 71, he was born around 1946. In 1965, he must have been 19 or almost 19. The others were possibly the same age, not between 13 and 16 as it's claimed in the video.
Where's the documentary mentioned ? You can't just leave us hanging with a story like this, c'mon.
I want to see a movie about this, then on the island how they lived I mean these kids were young back then. And then the aftermath, sure they were arrested but I want to hear how that went as well!

Police : you are under arrest for taking stuff that didn’t belong to you. It took us over a year to make this arrest.
Its a cold case that got solved and Im sure it got them points. Kudos to the rescuer to bailing the kids out a second time.

No, Lord of the flies was from 1954. They stranded in 1969.
Lord of the Flies was written by a mentally ill drunk with lifelong aggression issues, and projected those issues into a story about young boys instinct to descend into savagery as opposed to working together. Obviously that didn’t happen in real life, because at the end of the day most humans do work together in crisis.
