    Spin-off technologies are great but still, for me, the greatest reason why space exploration is so important is to undestand the universe and figure what is our place in it.

      Exactly. We focus only on short term problems (climate change, population numbers, pollution...) while really we also need to make more thing that will benefit humanity in hundreds or thousands of years. We'll always have the short term problems and if we only focus on these we won't go anywhere

      The Universe itself may embody the ultimate answer to the question of our purpose, but we need much evolution and self advancement to *even find the optimal questions to ask.* I hope colonizing the solar system and exploring outer space will provide us with enough challenges to find such questions instead of devolving.

In terms of the economic multiplier government dollars spent on space frequently have a larger economic impact than alternative welfare spending, so more people benefit

    In a world of division, hate, and just overall pessimism about the world in general, our sense of adventure and having something to rally behind has gone by the wayside. We don't have a lot of visionaries anymore and that's why I commend Elon Musk, SpaceX, NASA and other companies that are giving us reasons to dream again... giving us something to rally behind. I will admit that I was emotional and full of pride as I watched the first Starship launch.. I found myself cheering! Not only for how spectacular it was, but seeing the hard work of thousands becoming a reality. Why should the world be about just focusing on "problems," doing the 9-5, same ole same ole. Is that really our purpose as a species? Right now the world needs more dreamers.

    In context, America spends up to 10 billion a year in space/NASA.
    American military budget is $800 billion to $1 trillion of known budget [black budget could add more]
    Quantitative Easing [around $20 trillion so far] is money given to corporations for 10 years. [1 trillion is 1,000 billion]
    Space expenditure is small by comparison.

    • @rednammoc
      @rednammoc ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Research doesn't occur just because it can occur on Earth - there has to be the right mix of resources (funding, knowledge, skills and capability) and these don't get allocated on a particular area unless the appropriate level of sponsorship is gained. Space investments have clearly provided funding, motivation and justification for those technologies to be researched.
      The argument isn't about location of research, it's about the (totally valid) desire from some for public funding to be allocated less towards the space sector, and instead to other sectors; in this scenario, it's even less likely that those technological breakthroughs would have occurred, simply because research would either be less overall (because funding is allocated to non-research activities), or simply focused on areas less pertinent to space exploration.

    • @smacksman1

      @@smacksman1 Space exploration depends upon solving problems that don't occur on earth, true. However, while that means that such R&D isn't going to get done (at the same rate/likelihood), the video does show that the resulting solutions can solve more than just the initial problem scope and thus has far wider value than just space exploration..
