As much as I love living on Long Island, we are technically not an island. Legally, we are a peninsula according to the Supreme Court. And it’s because of the East River. The East River is a tidal strait, not a river, and it was widened for safe ship passage. Thus because it’s not a natural river, Long Island is not an island. The US vs Maine case was about who controlled the waters surrounding Long Island and Block Island. If Long Island counted as an island, they’d be controlled by the federal gov rather than the states. And so NY was hoping for Long Island to be counted as a peninsula.

So Hub Island isn’t by Manhattan but rather it’s a part of the Thousand Islands region, a group of islands that straddle the Canadian border on the Saint Lawrence River between NY and Ontario. That volcano on Tenerife is called Teide, and it sits upon a crater called Las Cañadas. Which is the remains of an older basalt shield volcano (making it a volcano on a volcano...volcanoception). This is the name of that caldera you’re seeing. Measuring from the ocean floor, it is the third highest volcano and has been labeled a Decade Volcano. Decade Volcanoes are active volcanoes we have to keep an eye on because of their proximity to densely populated areas and thus their eruptions could threaten hundreds of thousands of people. My great grandma is from the Canary Islands so I love when people mention them
