I have been quilting for about 8 months. I love scrap quilting the best. I purchase scrapes and /or cut used clothes, sheets, curtains. Since you are very very good at upcycling, also mixing different colors together to make beautiful clothing, I can see you adding quilted swatches to your designs.

How you finding it?! I’ve always been quite nervous to try out quilting because there’s so much to learn!😂 I’ve definitely got my eyes on other patterns that requires additional applique haha!

I loved that you did this. I’m a very part time seller of upcycled fabric on Insta. I struggle with the admin side of the business. Personally I learn from watching and listening more then reading alone. This really helped me get motivated and possibly a little more organised to retry again on my page. 💚🌈
I have a stash of tea towels that I wanted to make a dress with but never had the courage to do. (Or maybe just the know how) that’s how I discovered your channel looking for sewing tutorials. What a great find you have been. Looking forward to drafting, sewing and learning with your 💚🌈💚🌈

As soon as you said Treehouse Textiles, I got excited. Treehouse Textiles is a small quilting and patchwork shop in my town here in Australia. It sits between a pub and a cafe and always has the most amazing window display.

Oh girlfriend! Take it from someone who has made more quilts than I can remember, that you are going to absolutely HATE trying to piece those big curves on the blocks of the quilt you want to make. If you are determined to make this quilt, I highly suggest that you cut squares the size of a finished block and then applique the pieced circles to the center of them instead. You always remember your first quilt the most and I want you to have happy memories of putting yours together!

The best hint that I can give you is to make a couple of practice blocks before you start on your planned fabrics so you don’t run short. It really helps on complex blocks

First, as a quilt teacher, I suggest you. Pick a simpler pattern with straight seams for your first quilt. I usually teach a simple Irish chain that does not need a pattern, just a rotary cutter and a ruler. Patterns with curved lines are more difficult to sew. If you want something to handpiece during your holiday, then find some thin, clear plastic to use for templates. I used to save flat plastic from toys we gave our kids as presents or you can buy template plastic made for quilting. Some are able to be used with an iron. If you cut templates on the sewing lines and add the seam allowances when you cut out the pieces. Then you can use the sewing lines you put on the backside of the fabric as a sewing guides as you hand sew them.
    I hope this helps.

You’re really jumping into the deep end with that quilt pattern Scarlet but you’ll do great I know! You do need plastic and you can buy template plastic that is heat safe which might help you if you want to iron the seam allowance in advance. You cut out it the templates and then trace them on your fabric.

Hi Scarlett. Quilting! What can I say?! Well, to make your beautiful fat 1/4's stand out to be the hero of the quilt, find fabric that compliments the colours of the quilt blocks. A lovely pale colour to creamy whites in the colour scheme you love for the background of each block. Use colours from your beautiful fat 1/4's for the extra fabrics needed to put the blocks together and outer borders. Start by cutting the main block pieces. To stream line, have a colour/pattern swatch for each block marked out and where that block lives in the finished quilt. This can be done with the pattern design printed/drawn out and coloured with pencils or stick small pieces of fabric on each piece of each block. The most time consuming part.
You may want to record this in a book and call it your quilt diary, recording name of quilt, size, amount of blocks, date started and finished. Whatever you want to record about your quilt. Do this for every quilt you make.
To make sewing the 3 layers together, called quilting, easier, invest in a walking foot for your machine. Before you start cutting your new fabrics, Make a couple of blocks using other fabrics to make sure you understand how the block is cut, sewn, pressed, ironed. Most patterns say to press a seam, meaning to run your finger along it to flatten. So take notice about the instructions true meaning.
There are quick ways of putting blocks together, one way being 'string' sew in columns or row by in an orderly fashion, make sure each block has a number, either going down in columns or across in rows. Sew block 1&2 together, don't pull thread to cut off and sew the next one, just sew blocks 3&4 together, 5&6 together, 7&8, 9&10, etc until the end of that row or column. You will have a string of blocks.
If there are 10 blocks per row, for example, Sew the first pair of blocks to the second pair, 3rd pair to the 4th pair. then sew blocks 1,2,3,4 to 5,6,7,8, then sew the 8,10 pair to the 8th block, finishing your first row.
Repeat this process with each row or column. When they are all sewn, use the same pairing process to the rows or columns until your quilt top is finished. There is usually a narrow strip sewn onto one side of the block, the same for rows or columns.
When sewing these row/column strips onto your row/column of blocks, you must ease the row onto the strip. So the strip needs to be cut exact to keep the quilt top properly aligned.
Once that is all done with seams meeting perfectly, you can add the borger strips.
That will be the patchwork done.
Then you need to sandwich your wadding between the quilt top and backing fabric. Upcycling a bed sheet is fine if it is in good condition.
First lay the 3 layers on top of each other, making sure wadding and backing is larger than the top. pin the layers together. I use safety pins still.
There are several ways/patterns to quilt with, so research on YT. You will find everything I have spoken of here somewhere.
Lastly, trim wadding and backing fabric neat with the edge of the top, then bind the edges. Also found on YT.
Dont forget to put a label on the back, usually the bottom corner and take a photo to add to your quilt diary.
A lot, I know. Have fun. It is a very satisfying craft.

Some quilt pattern designers also have acrylic templates for their patterns that you can purchase. Or you can make cardboard templates to use to cut out all your fabric. Make sure that you only use 1/4 seam allowances when you sew your blocks together.

I've been quilting for years and honestly, I'd advised you to start with a simpler pattern. There are lots of lovely scrappy patterns that use straight lines. I'd hate for you to be put off by a really tough pattern. You have a fantastic eye for colour so even using a simpler pattern it will look amazing. ❤
