  • Come along for every step as I setup for a live stream overhaul. I received a scene file and some multitracks from a subscriber and I'm going to go from top to bottom on a rebuild of their live stream setup. They have a dedicated console for their live stream so we get a lot of flexibility with how we setup the console. This is part 1 of a two part series and I'll link the second one below once it is out. This one covers all of the setup and pre-work and the second will cover the actual sounds, EQ, Compression, FX and mixing.

Thanks Dave! This video explains all the "how-to's" for all of the questions we're coming up with!

That’s great news. I think the part 2 video will provide some additional insight on what I’m hearing and how I built the mix.

Good review for setup. Next step is to consider how to build the stereo field in the stream setup and using maybe 8-12 bus pairs for grouping instrument types. Also, regarding stereo image and so forth, a bonus video that many would want to see is use of Snippets - which are fantastic for switching channel panning and effects settings and many other small changes between songs for the operator to pull up snippets rather than mixing faders and knobs for each song as lead singers change, song BPM changes and of course reverb lengths change per song, etc. I suppose you are going to mix into L/R and then route that to Matrix pair for limiter. I highly suggest using the Edison EX1 instead of the limiter - it can act as a final boost and help facilitate a little more stereo spread. Limiter is good but really not needed. You can use the Matrix Compressor as a limiter.

I would love a video about all of that too

@@lovefirst6157 I have used snippets for about 3 months now (mixing on X32 since 2015...) and should have been for years. So good. Just a button between songs and all is set for the next song or service's message. You can also adjust who has the de-esser during songs and speaking and even adjust bus-routing between songs. Right now we have no real budget to upgrade so I have been trying to wring out as much from the X32 as possible. I use my personal laptop but want to get a church-owned PC in. I run Live Professor and do some funky stuff with guitar and bass and kick (ie. add a sub-kick plug-in for kick and some distortion for bass and so some added reverb forvocalists, etc. - plus I monitor the stream feed using SPAN, a free pluging to graph RTA. I'm shooting to get a PC to be permanently attached much like James Attaway does in some of his videos where he does vocal tuning with Live Professor. An 8-core 16GB to 32GB Windows 10 PC is enough. Something with maybe a 3.x or higher GHz CPU so to try to lower latency (and better latency would be with Waves Superrack Performer and a Waves Card in the X32). Of course, why send tracks back to the X32 - use that PC then for DAW mixing for stream. I might go that route if I can make it permanent. I don't trust my laptop for doing a DAW mix now and when two other audio guys mix, they don't have it to work with - if it was a permanent machine, they could use it for more processing.

Yeah, I’ll probably end up running the 1176 comp on the main out and then shooting it to a Matrix. I agree that the Precision Limiter might not be needed and it does open up an opportunity to explore the Edison. I’ve used that in the past in some board mixes and liked it, but I have been hesitant to send it to live production for teams that might be “knob happy” as it can get out of hand pretty quick. Thanks again for the encouragement and thoughts.

@@AllamHouse Yeah, you do have to keep that turned down to maybe 8-10% but it does have a make-up gain feature much like you would use on the limiter on Input gain, so it can kind of do a few things. X32 could be so much better with just a tad more processing power and maybe 12 rack entries. For those of us who cannot upgrade the only thing we really can do is mix broadcast fully on a DAW. But right now, we're mixing broadcast really well on the X32 by adding some elements of returns from Live Professor to double a guitar (to get "wide" guidar(s) and so on). I even used Solaris, a free vst, on a keyboard or electric guitar. That can create a lot of shimmer. And then doing that, "you're now in the band" :)
