- Seoul's Olympic Park features the flags of participating nations at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Here I point out the ones that have since been changed.

Every country that has hosted the Olympics should do this its a great way of preserving history.
I love when there are still "relics" of when a country hosted the Olympics. When I went to Barcelona, it was nice to see all the stuff that happened there because of 1992. It just gives it a magical feeling. I wonder how Tokyo will be shaped and if it'll keep something from their Olympics in 2021

Some of these flags or Republics are not there:
Hong Kong was a British Territory until 1997.
Burma
1999 (you can say Myanmar or Burma)
USSR
1917-1992
Netherlands Antilles is not a country
You can either say the Democratic Republic of the Congo or South Sudan, but South Sudan gained independence in 2011.
Bulgaria had a Socialist Federation but you cant have a communist state without private property
The Yugoslavia broke apart but the Federal Republic of the Balkan Yugoslavia or Serbia Montenegro was technically the name until 2003.
Zaire was a democratic country but was dissolved and abolished in 1999.

Fun fact: The Czech Republic is not allowed to use the Czechoslovakian flag because it promised to abondon all Czechoslovakian symbols in the Velvet Split, but they did it anyways
The Philippines Flag is Old because the 3rd Republic Flag of The Philippines but now it's a little bit brighter that's the 5th Republic Flag of The Philippines

There were many people enjoying the Olympic Park (like the lady behind me with her dog, at the end of the video). But I was the only one nerding out by the flags. :P
I loved this flag tour. I wish tonadd some of those dead nations or old versions of the flags to my collection

Zaiire only had a name change and is still a country. It is the Democratic Republic of Congo.
But doesn't have that flag anymore, the colour shades of the new flag are, Red, White, Light Blue, Yellow

FYI, vexillographer... at that time, the countries are arranged following the Hangul alphabetical order.... G is the 1st letter and ended with H....

There was also the old flag of Brazil. 🇧🇷 Brazil’s Current Flag was made in 1992.

The proportion is off, the flag on display is definitely 1:2 and not the correct 2:3

Great video. You are correct in that Taiwan still uses that flag to compete in the Olympic games and they have to go by the name of "Chinese Taipei".
They do however use other flags to compete in other world sporting events. For example the sky blue flag with a big letter U on it used during the recent Universiade games.
I spotted the old flag of Iraq, which just had the three stars in place of the inscription. The Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) was represented by the Pan-Arab tricolor with a single green star. Did you catch the old Congolese communist-style flag? I did get a glimpse of Libya’s previous plain green flag. The Bahraini flag had eight points on its serrated line, whereas there are now five points. The Mongolian flag had a Communist gold star above the emblem on the hoist, and Albania had a gold-edged red star above the double-headed Eagle. Of course, Greece is recognized first in line during the Parade of Nations, as they hosted the first modern Olympics. I have always wanted to visit Seoul and South Korea, and had a huge crush on the Taegukgi!

The Olympic flag with the "cool spiral thing" - that was the Seoul Olympic logo over the Olympic rings.
Vexillographer, have you watched the Pyeongchang 2018 opening ceremony? The same order goes in the Parade of Nations. It's confusing.
I we t to those Olympic Games and I’m glad been those were the last traditional Olympic Games and the last time USSR and USA competed against each other.
Of course the "swirly thing" flag is that of the 1988 Olympics, which is distinct from the overall Olympics flag.

Right now I saw the old flag of Mauritania at the end of the video that changed recently.
Yugoslavia is now North Macedonia ,Kosovo,Montenegro,Serbia,Croatia,Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Slovenia and maybe a tiny part of Italy.

3:23 the flag of the Philippines is Navy Blue or the National Flag Blue. It was used in 1936 to 1998. it was change in February 12, 1998. If we compare it in today’s flag, its lighter than before. beacuse its Royal Blue.

Mongolia，Hong Kong，Myanmar，Afghanistan，Cyprus，Iraq，（North）Yemen，Oman，Libya，Benin，Congo-Brazzaville，Zaire（now Congo-Kinshasa)，Rwanda，Lesotho，Romania and Bulgaria changed theirs flags after them joined Seoul Olympic Games.
And five former countries（regions） ：South Yemen，USSR，East Germany，Yugoslavia and Netherlands Antilles, these flags also historical flags.

the Philippines has also changed its flag, kind of barely. The color scheme were red, white, yellow, and navy blue. The new one is that the blue shade is lighter.
yeah cuz in 1936 to 1998, the flag is navy blue or the national flag blue. in february 12, 1998, it was change into royal blue the blue shade we use today. but for me the navy blue is better cuz it gives me nostalgia even i dont live that time plus its aesthetic to look if its navy blue.

The flags that don't exist anymore are: Zaire , Burma, ( myamar), east Germany, s. Yemen, and the USSR, Chinese Taipei.

I know the flags of Palau, Micronesia and Marshall Islands, because those territories are somewhat within Australia's regional cultural sphere, although of course they are Sovereign States in Free Association with the United States. And I know the Guam and American Samoa flags. But I didn't know the flags of the dependencies. The more you know!

I had a friend in university whose iPhone wallpaper was the flag of South Yemen.

Yemen isn't even a functioning country at this point. South Yemen ain't coming back anytime soon.
Browns Fan No. When the country stabilizes it may only be as two separate countries. I'm Yemeni American by the way. There is very strong support for a separate state in the south and they have fought and liberated their region while the north remains under control of the Houthi rebels/Saleh forces. I hope they don't divide again but it's sadly looking that way.
We'll see. But I don't think Saudi Arabia and the United States would let that happen, as they are going all out to keep Saleh in power. They can't legally break away until conflict simmers down, which will not happen for at least another 15 years. I don't see it happening.
Actually, Saleh is on the other side now with the Houthis. Saudi planes destroyed his mansion in the capital on the first month of the conflict. However these last couple of weeks show he may be splitting from the Houthis.
