- Anchored at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco sits the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, one of two remaining Liberty class ships from World War 2!
This ship was off the coast of Normandy supplying troops on the beaches during D-Day, and now it's a floating museum.

I could see how his ingrance might annoy you. Ignorance can be fixed though, with education. What occur itches me a little is that he seems unmotivated try to understand something that he admittedly does not understand, even a little, like when he shows the diagram of the engine. Or pointing to what looks to me like a single cylinder/valve head on this massive engine room and says "this is the engine". Maybe he was joking, but I sensed no tongue in cheek there.
But to be fair, if you were to take a tour, fairly often, you will find a tour guide who knows about as much about machines as this guy doesn't.
Except that they are at least trained on some of the base factoids surrounding the vessel, usually battle stories and such, with some specs and stats of the engine itself.
But the sheer scale of the ship has made an impression on him, and I can appreciate the exuberance he displays for that.
That said, he should tour a carrier, or other such ship which would completely dwarf this one.
It survived World War II, it survived the reserve Fleet, it survived nearly being burned recently and back on the 50th anniversary of D-Day it was the only large ship to return to France

Fun fact, the phrase "8 Shots" stenciled on the bulkhead (wall) near the bow refers to how much anchor chain is attached to the adjacent anchor. A shot of chain is 90 ft, so 8 shots is 720ft, which will let you anchor (in good weather in up to about 100' of water. Why its 90 ft and not a more round number like 100, is buried in history, but sometimes it makes you take your shoes off when doing anchoring calculations cause you run out of fingers! ;)

Thank you Dylan for posting and showing us around the ship. My father was in the merchant marines aboard the Pierce Butler and on November 20th 1942 at11:40 AM his ship was hit with two torpedoes, 1 forward of the engine room and 1 aft, my father was taking a shower at the time they were hit and he said that the whole ship just shuddered and he ran up totally naked and went out to see that they were not sinking that fast, so he went back down below got dressed and grabbed his papers and got in the life boat along with 61 other survivors which was everyone on board my father at the time was the youngest 17. This happened off the coast of Durbin, South Africa. After the ship sank the U-177 surfaced near all the life boats and asked if they needed to call for rescue and announced that they were not out to kill men but to stop shipping. They were picked up some 20 hours later by HMS Fortune [H 70] and deposited in Durbin. The Pierce Butler had left from New York en route to Egypt thru the Suez .

important to remember....this remarkable ship & crew of avg.age 72 sailed this ship back to england-then France in 1994 to Normandy_omaha beach to remember 50 years since D. Day. As merchant Ship...she was at beach among all the modern Giants of our fleet today-ONLY one to make it back...50 years later!!!♡♡cruise Fleet week ALSO May memorial day cruises-out under Golden Gate Bridge....full bands-great Food...all aboard!

They weren't really designed to last more then 5 years yet there she sits 80 years later, and it's the most mass produced ship ever as far as I know.

There are 4 that are intact, 2 still run (the O’Brian and and the John W, Brown), one is a static museum in Greece (Hellas Liberty), and a 4th is landlocked in Alaska as a headquarters for a fish company (Star of Kodak). There are also quite a few wrecks

WWII museum ships all smell the same way that's impossible to exactly describe to someone who hasn't been on one. Like a combination of paint, oil, Cosmoline, hint of cordite/"gun scent" and old electronics. I've never served in the military/Navy so I can't say if all ships modern as well smell this way.
My late father (passed last year at 91) turned 18 in August of 1944. He left home for Army basic training at Camp Blanding, FL a week later. He was on a troop ship to Italy (USS Wakefield, a converted ocean liner previously named the Manhattan) by early November. They slept on deck some of the time, the ship was being tailed by U-boats. But the old ocean liner had turbine drive, it was still fast enough to outrun them. Assuming none of the boilers or turbines went down, I guess. Earlier near the beginning of the war he said he could sometimes see ships burning off the coast of Cape Cod near where he lived in Massachusetts as a kid, the U-boats came in very close to hit ships leaving Boston and NYC. The enemy was right on his doorstep..

I first went aboard the O'Brien at Portsmouth, England (Navy Days) just prior to the 50th anniversary of D-day. It was the only one of of thousands to return. SALUTE!

She's somewhere around 500 ft long, and 52 ft wide. fully loaded she was supposed to be 29 ft deep. I forgot how many tons of cargo she could haul, but it definitely wouldn't meet today's shipping standards.

It's permanent! They have cruises during Fleet Week!
@@vvarietyshow We went on one of the Fleet Week Cruises. It was so cool to see the Blue Angels and the.rest of the air show from the SF Bay near Alcatraz from the deck if the O'Brien.

some of those 20 mm gun tubs look like they need some serious work on restoring they are looking really rusted out.
Not to be rude but you do display an ignorance of these ships, and world war 2 ships in general, hell... world war 2 in general. But you're showing a fascination in history and I can't discredit that. Every fascination has to begin somewhere so I'm going to have to give credit where it's due. Especially since, when it comes to history, most people can't tell the difference between their a** hair and Lord Kitchener's mustache.
I am definitely no expert on the ship itself, but I'm pretty well versed with WW2 history. Sometimes when doing a video like this you have to simplify the story to present it in an easily digestible way for the casual viewer, and the way I film is run and gun so sometimes it gets disjointed. The goal of my channel is to explore and have a good time, hopefully inspiring people to do it themselves. I am not trying to do a video essay or be entirely comprehensive. I am always trying to learn more as I go and try to remember it in a presentable way. My great grandfather was a Seabee and in the Pacific so I grew up with his stories and artifacts. If I had any facts wrong I would love to hear where and what. Not being argumentative either, I genuinely care.
He says it is a liberty ship but thats was a cargo ship thats hot from America to Engeland not to France of has some vind as defence and nothing more. HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHERE HE IS TALKING ABOUT

Ohh you took a class? I guess you know more than the actual museum then 😂... Just like I said in the video at the model towards the end, this ship was off the coast supplying the troops that were storming the beach. I never implied this was a battleship or led the charge.
Liberty ships ARE cargo ships
