      Seriously man... I had one grandfather in the Navy but he wasn't on a sub if I remember correctly. Also had an uncle that was a tunnel rat in Vietnam, they told his story in a book called Line Doggie. Can't imagine going into foot wide tunnels with nothing but a pistol.

    What a great video!!
    The last time I was in SF, my daughter and I toured this boat. It's mind-boggling to think so many people were crammed into this tiny thing for so long. No video can truly show you the sense of crampedness that you feel merely walking through this, much less sleeping on it. These WWII-era submarines certainly were not for the claustrophobic.

      According to my dad (a Bubblehead on the boomer SSBN 642 USS Kamehameha in the 80s) you get used to the tight quarters fairly quick. They also screen out things like people who have claustrophobia or who are particularly tall (at 5'11" I would barely be allowed to be a bubblehead myself). During WWII I think something like 5'10 was the height limit for those hoping to enter into the Silent Service. Fun fact, even during my dad's time it was understood among all the crews that if a sub goes down, most likely it will be all hands lost. Number of men who have survived their sub going down in the US Navy is barely in the double digits if memory serves. We lost quite a few subs in WWII. Momento Mori.

    I can't stop rambling. Sorry!
    One of the most interesting things about submarine life during this era is that the diesel engines would produce SOOO much heat and how weird that must have been for people on the ship knowing that they're submerged in 30-something degree water while it's 100+ on the inside of that can. Can you imagine? I live in Phoenix and even I cannot even imagine the hell that would be. That's why when you see actually photos of the boys onboard, they're in wife-beaters, shirtless, etc...

    Hi. I was surprised how much "freedom" you had to touch and handle various parts. Over here in England l don't think we'd get this. But the ships l've been on have a running commentary of how they operate. You had to be a very special kind of person to be on board this fish in war time ! Thanks for sharing.

    • @vvarietyshow
      @vvarietyshow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's definitely cool we can interact with it a bit, although it is pretty stripped down. Thankfully people are respectful enough to not trash it. It would be awesome to do some videos on British ships and subs, maybe someday!

      @@vvarietyshow This will make you laugh. I'm probably twice your age ,at least! When we watched films on TV they were always in Black and White. So, it's 1960ish , a submarine called into Torquay Harbour . Dad was invited on board . I was probably 7/8 years old . The Captain invited me to look through the periscope. WOW! How exciting is that! Down comes the periscope, l look into it and ....this can't be right it's in colour ! So quick as a flash l shouted out to the Captain . "Captain ! There's something wrong with your periscope , everything's in colour , it should be black and white ! Well, the Captain and crew burst into howls of laughter! It took a lot of persuading to convince me there was nothing wrong!!! 😂😂😂😂

    • @vvarietyshow
      @vvarietyshow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      😂 For some reason that reminds me of when I would stay up late to watch Johnny Carson and my mom would turn off the TV with the remote and just say "oops, looks like TV is done for the night". For years I thought TV just finished and turned off. But thanks for commenting, I am insecure about this video and the SS Jeremiah O'Brien video I did the same day, I was in a very bad mood and was rushed, I didn't feel like I did my best and I kick myself for it. So it's nice when people see past the flaws and enjoy it for what it is 👍

      Try going to Submarine museum Gosport Hants. HMS/m Alliance. She's out of the water nowadays so you can touch. The Torpedo innef hatches can be opened and closed. She was a training sub when I was at HMS Dolphin in the 70,s and still in the water. Never trained on her myself as went onto Polaris Subs. But our O and P class were simular and still designed around German U boats.

    In answer to your question about room in today's Navy. Compared to WWII ships, they have a lot more room, but some things are still tight. Even our WWII Gato, Balao, and Tench class submarines had far greater comfort than the British, German U-Boat, and Japanese subs. Thanks for the video.

      Also the interactive part of this museum is encouraged. We weren't breaking the rules, we were enjoying it as presented.

      That guage you played with? Was a guage that would save your crews life..do your home work before you fiddle with what you don't know. I didn't serve on that vessel but the same guage is on all of them. Everygauge is an instrument of war regardless how innocent it looks. People lived and died by them under the depths of the sea! Keep your hands off of what you don't understand!!! Enough said!
