I had one once; a long long time ago. Had it in a decent size tank, together with a zebra cichlid and a firemouth cichlid (meeki). The Herichthys was the bigger one, then the meeki, then the zebra, which you call convicts i think (Amatitlania nigrofasciata).
At first seemed ok. The meeki's are always a bit more shy and prefer a bit of shade and cover. I had a couple of plants in, but that didnt take long, as the 'texan' ripped em out on day 1. So the Meeki hid a bit between the rocks. Was clear right away that the Texan was dominant. But it was doable, though i didnt see the Meeki much.
The Texan and the zebra/convict seemed to get along fine, often swimming together.
The tank was in the hallway, with plenty of room for people to pass and since there usually arent people there, it was pretty quiet for them.
One day i see the Texan, going after the Meeki, dragging him out of the hole he was trying to cover in, by the pectoral fin. That wasnt ok, so i decided to take the Meeki out before the Texan would kill him.
Pretty soon after they were making pits in the gravel at the bottom and all of a sudden i had 100s of cross breed Texan/convicts. It was quite the show.
It was also at that time where the Texan would attack anyone he could see in the hallway... expanding his gills, coloring, all fins straight up, mouth open against the glass, furiously swimming back and forth like that. It was very funny... a little fish (about 8 inches i guess) attacking humans.
The little ones all got bigger and bigger and i managed to get some people to take some, but eventually set them all out in a pond here. They would all sure die in winter, but at least they could have some time 'in the wild'. (obviously never do that, if it is not sure they will die there, bc you dont want to be responsible for yet another invasive species)
It is a nice fish, colors (at least the one i had) much prettier than the ones you see in videos. But it is a bit agressive, so you cant keep them with any non cichlid fish and not with smaller cichlids either imo.

Jesus i never would have thought to see a Jaguar and Jack Dempsey both hiding in fear from another fish. They usually are the toughest or bullies and openly swim about.

Iv had the same problem with my super green texas. I have much the same fish and my texas just bullies the tank. Iv even tried to upgrade to a 6 ft tank and that has settle him a little but he still bullies the tank. Your right in saying fish the same size or bigger but in saying that my fire mouth is way smaller and he doesn't go near him. So strange but that's the wonders of owning fish I guess

If you revise the setup to a more natural one the behavior may get more natural. Give them more hiding places and more natural decor and they should work it out.

I've had Texas Cichlids, and will have them again. Love them. The sweetest, and most aggressive I've ever had. Can't wait to get some again. Get that ship out, and put natural hides. They'll relax more. Plus fake plants. Don't use real. They'll tear them up. I had a mating pair of Texas Cichlids, huge pleco and a Jelly Bean Cichlid in a 150 gal. No fights between them except when they nested.

I just got a juvenile Texas Cichlid and put it with my other slightly older Juvenile Electric Blue JD and my Jackdempsey doesn’t necessarily pick on the TC but if they get close enough to one another the JD will chase him away 💪🏻

@@joshuaratz264 I got one that was definately male, bc he bred with a convict female.
It can take quite some years for the male cichlids to get such a headhump. So one without, doesnt mean it is a female. Unless if its really big / close to their max size. But they breed long before they get max size.
